Orthopedic Boot Key to Solving Killing: Prosecutor

An orthopedic boot left behind at the scene of a 2012 New Jersey slaying was the clue that led to the arrest of the victim's accused killer, the Camden County Prosecutor’s Office said.

William Davis, 24, of Camden, was arraigned at Superior Court in Camden Monday, following his arrest last week in connection with the Dec. 5, 2012, fatal shooting of Dontae Perkins, 25. Judge Edward McBride ordered Davis held on $1.5 million bail.

An orthopedic boot was found on the sidewalk near Perkins’ body, according to the Camden County Prosecutor’s Office. Davis died of multiple gunshot wounds, the medical examiner found.

The prosecutor’s office said a break in 1.5-year-old case came when a Camden police detective remembered having seen Davis wearing a boot, identical to the one that was found, while investigating another shooting from four days earlier.

Davis had been shot in the foot in that Dec. 1, 2012, shooting.

Investigators determined that Davis and Perkins had argued before Davis allegedly shot Perkins across the street from where Davis lived, the prosecutor’s office said.

It was not immediately clear what attorney was representing Davis.

Police say the male suspect barricaded himself inside a home on the 2000 block of Mountain Street. Investigators also say another armed male suspect may be inside the home as well.

Teen Punches Homeless Man in the Face

Police are on the hunt for a group of teenagers who allegedly planned a videotaped attack on a homeless man and then posted the recording on Facebook.

“Pure evil,” said Upper Darby Police Superintendent Michael Chitwood. “There was absolutely no reason to do it, other than being mean and evil.”

According to Chitwood, surveillance video from a nearby bank shows four teenage boys sitting at the Aronimink Trolley Stop at Burmont Road and Morgan Avenue in Upper Darby back on June 11.

“You can see that they’re planning something in the surveillance video,” Chitwood said. “You see all four of them get up and go through the doorway that leads inside the building where the victim is seated, doing nothing and minding his own business.”

A Facebook video, which investigators say one of the suspects posted, shows a teen briefly speaking to the victim, described by Chitwood as a 58-year-old “semi-homeless man.” The teen then punches the man in the face as his friends laugh in the background.

“He hit him so hard he’s lucky he didn’t kill him,” Chitwood said. “They are bragging about it. You see them laughing. They’re so stupid that they put it on Facebook which is great for us.”

Surveillance video then shows the teens leaving the scene. Police say the victim refused medical treatment.

Chitwood told NBC10 he believes the attack was related to the “knockout game,” which gained nationwide attention last year. The attacks, typically carried out by teens, consist of someone punching a stranger in the head at random. The goal is to try and knock them out cold. Some of the beatings are recorded and posted online for all to see.

“It’s one of those things that we’ve read about it, that we haven’t seen in this area and that’s the knockout punch that was going around for a while,” Chitwood said. “This is exactly what that is.”

Upper Darby Police released a surveillance photo of the teen who they claim assaulted the man. Chitwood said they are in the process of identifying him as well as the other three suspects.

“They’ll be charged with assault, terroristic threats, recklessly endangering another person and conspiracy,” Chitwood said. “We’re working hard and we’re doing a full court press. We’ll get them.”

If you have any information on the identity of the teens, please call Upper Darby Police at 610-734-7684 or the anonymous tip line at 610-734-3439.

Police are searching for a driver who allegedly followed two young girls during two separate incidents in Drexel Hill, Pa.

Investigators say a 12-year-old girl was walking to Drexel Hill Middle School back on the morning of May 27 when she noticed a man driving around the area slowly and following her on Edmonds and Huey Avenues.

On the afternoon of June 12, another 12-year-old student at Drexel Hill told police that the same suspect approached her, rolled his windows down and asked if she wanted a ride to school.

Both students reported the incidents to school officials. Neither of them were hurt.

Investigators say the suspect is driving either an older model, black or blue Ford Taurus or a Mercury Marquis. The driver is described as a bald, dark-skinned man in his 40’s with facial hair.

“Right now we do not have any criminal charges,” said Upper Darby Police Superintendent Michael Chitwood. “But what we want to do is identify this individual to see who he is, where he’s from and what he’s about.”

If you have any information on the man’s identity, please call Upper Darby police at 610-734-7677.

“We want to make sure that parents talk with their children and share with them the stranger danger theory,” Chitwood said. “With these predators who are out there on social media, riding around in cars, walking on the streets, children have be aware of their surroundings and they have to be aware of what’s right and wrong.”

Outreach Program in Need of Money After Bus Fire

For over 100 years, the Neighborhood Center has provided a helping hand to residents in Camden. But after a devastating fire, organizers at the center say they’re now in need of some help themselves.

Last month, the bus used to transport children at the Center’s summer adventure camp caught fire and was completely destroyed. With around 100 kids attending the camp, the program is now at risk of being cut.

“It’s a dire emergency,” said Sarina DiBiance, who works at the center. “We not only pick the children up and drop them off, we also take them to the Pinelands twice a week so they can swim and visit nature.”

In addition to the summer camp, the Neighborhood Center also provides childcare for local residents and feeds the homeless. With so many activities, the program does not have the funds to purchase a new bus, which costs $100,000, or lease one, which costs $1,000 a month.

They are now asking the public for donations. So far they’ve only raised $370 however. With schools starting to close and the start date for summer camp fast approaching, they have little time left to reach their goal.

“What may happen is some programs may get slighted and pushed to the backburner,” DiBiance said.

As the sedan pulled out onto Laurel Road, investigators say the motorcyclist struck the driver’s side of the vehicle, flew over the car and landed on the roadway.

The motorcyclist, who has not yet been identified, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the sedan was not injured.

Laurel Road was shut down in both directions for two hours as officials investigated.

Gun Robbery Suspect Charged; 2nd Suspect at Large

One of the suspects who held up two different men leaving gun ranges in two days has been charged.

Twenty-one-year-old Samiyyah Poteat faces multiple charges including attempted homicide, robbery and aggravated assault.

Poteat turned herself in to authorities Friday after seeing herself in surveillance video of the crimes.

Officials say Poteat along with her male accomplice were involved in two holdups at two different gun ranges -- the first at Yury's Gun Range in Philly's West Poplar neighborhood and the second at the Delaware Valley Sports Center in the city's Bustleton neighborhood.

The suspects waited in a parked car, a late model dark colored 2-door coupe, outside of the ranges until potential victims exited.

They robbed a 68-year-old man at gunpoint outside Yury's at 544 N. Percy St. around 6:40 p.m. Wednesday, emptying the victim's pockets and taking off with his backpack, which contained two .22 caliber handguns, according to authorities.

Poteat and her partner went to Delaware Valley Sports Center at 101 Geiger Road the next day and pulled off the same heist on an unsuspecting 67-year-old man, who was leaving the range with a friend around 8:40 p.m.

Officials say the robbers demanded the two men hand over their cash and gun and then fired shots, striking the 67-year-old even though neither victim put up a fight. The man was taken to the Aria-Torresdale Trauma Center where he is in critical but stable condition.

Police describe the male suspect -- who is still at large -- as 5-feet 10-inches tall with a thin build and in his twenties.

Investigators also recovered the getaway car used in the crimes Saturday. It was located on the 200 block of South Hanson Street in West Philly.

Over a week after he was involved in a crash that left him critically injured, actor-comedian Tracy Morgan's condition has improved, according to his publicist.

"Happy to pass along that Tracy has been upgraded to fair condition, which is a great improvement," Morgan's publicist Lewis Kay wrote in a released statement. "His personality is certainly starting to come back as well."

Morgan and six others were inside a Mercedes Sprinter limo traveling in the northbound lanes of the New Jersey Turnpike in Cranbury, New Jersey on the morning of Saturday, June 7 when a Walmart truck crashed into it, causing it to flip and hit four other vehicles.

Morgan was critically hurt in the accident, suffering a broken leg, femur, nose and ribs. He was flown to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick, N.J.  Morgan’s mentor and fellow comedian James “Jimmy Mack” McNair, 69, was killed in the crash.

Fellow passengers Jeffrey Millea and Ardie Fuqua, Jr. were also critically injured in the crash and remain hospitalized. Harris Stanton, another passenger, was treated and released on Sunday.

On Monday, Kay also revealed that Millea's condition has been upgraded to "fair."

Kevin Roper, the 35-year-old driver of the Walmart truck, was arrested and charged with Death by Auto and Assault by Driving. According to a criminal complaint, Roper hadn’t slept for at least 24 hours when the crash occurred. Investigators have not yet revealed however whether he fell asleep at the wheel.

League Retires Number of 14-Year-Old Boy Who Died

Friends and family gathered Monday night to honor a young athlete who died earlier this year.

A memorial service was held in Washington Township, New Jersey at 7 p.m. in honor of 14-year-old Nadiir King. King played for the Washington Township minutemen little league baseball team.

Participating teams in the Washington Township baseball program attended the service in which King's number was retired.

Last April, King collapsed and died while walking to a friend's house, the day before he was set to start at 3rd base for his baseball team.

King was walking to the Sewell, N.J. home of a friend, who became worried when Nadiir never arrived. The Chestnut Ridge 8th grader was found lying in the grass along the street.

Stanley King, the 14-year-old boy’s father, and others performed CPR on Nadiir until paramedics arrived. He was later pronounced dead.

While the game was initially canceled, coaches changed their minds after Nadiir's teammates said they wanted to play in his honor.

During the game against the South Jersey Braves, the Minutemen painted 16 - Nadiir's Jersey number on their faces in honor of their friend.

The coach also ordered patches displaying Nadiir’s initials that all 200 players on the Washington Township travel teams wore on their uniforms.

The Minutemen defeated the Braves, winning by one run.

The final score was 10 to nine, but halfway through the game the scoreboard froze.

The sign showed the score tied at 16.

Owner ID'd, Charges Pending in Cockfighting Bust

Numerous felony charges are pending against the alleged owner of a cockfighting ring in the Kensington section of Philadelphia.

Hiram Oquendo, 52, was arrested on Saturday after police say a tip led them to his home on the 2900 block of E Street.

When police arrived on Saturday around 3 a.m., they discovered a large scale cockfight that was in progress, according to investigators. Police say dozens of participants and spectators fled the scene but officers were able to arrest Oquendo.

Officials with the PSPCA removed 18 live roosters and one dead rooster from the home. The birds were brought to the Erie Avenue shelter for forensic evaluation.

“This is a fairly elaborate setup,’ said George Bengal of the SPCA. “He’s got an area in the back of this location that is pretty well concealed. There’s a lot of training equipment that he has back there. He’s got all the paraphernalia that’s used in bird fighting.”

Oquendo was taken into custody. Cruelty charges against him are pending and he is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on July 2.

"Cockfighting is a brutal crime against birds," said PSPCA CEO Jery Buckley. "It is not entertainment. These chickens died as a result and we will seek justice against Oquendo."
