Stay Safe on Icy Sidewalks: Walk Like a Penguin

$

The trick to balancing on slick sidewalks is to "walk like a penguin."

Instinct tells us to do the opposite and center our weight mid-stride, which works on dry walkways.

But this tactic forces legs to split your body weight in half and rely on both feet to maintain balance — not the best idea for icy streets.

A few years ago, Little Baby’s Ice Cream in Philadelphia's Northern Liberties neighborhood shared a simple infographic on their blog to remind everyone to think of gravity and mimic penguins. Shifting one’s weight onto the front leg keeps people – and penguins – from slipping.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention backs up the penguin waddle claim, reminding people to also spread feet slightly to fortify the center of gravity.

With sidewalks freezing over, remember to stay smart and give yourself extra time to waddle to and fro.

One more tip, keep your hands out of your pockets (and in gloves) and wear a puffy coat…so if you do fall, at least you can catch yourself and cushion your buns.

A woman died after losing control of her vehicle while driving on a snow-covered road and then crashing into a pond in Townsend, Delaware.

The 35-year-old Dagsboro resident was driving a 2016 Hyundai Sonata northbound on the curved portion of State Route 1 Wednesday shortly after 1 p.m. when she lost control.

Her vehicle slid off the east edge of the roadway and went down a snow-covered grass embankment before crashing into a retention pond. The vehicle became completely submerged in water and the woman was unable to get out.

Rescue divers eventually pulled the woman out and she was taken to Christiana Hospital where she was pronounced dead.

Police are notifying next of kin before releasing the victim’s identity.

Wednesday’s mixture of snow and freezing rain led to slippery road conditions across the region as well as several accidents.

Driver Revived With Narcan After Crashing Bus Full of Students

Police have arrested a school bus driver after she crashed a school bus carrying 12 special-needs students into a tree in New Jersey, and had to be revived with Narcan after she allegedly got high on heroin, police and sources say.

The driver was transporting the 12 children, ranging in age from 5 to 13, from Fourteenth Avenue Elementary School in Newark around 1:10 p.m. Wednesday when she crashed into a tree at 14th Avenue and Jones Street, according to police.

Newark Public Safety Director Anthony Ambrose identified the driver as Lisa Byrd, 57, of East Orange.

First responders found Byrd unconscious at the scene and used Narcan to revive her, Ambrose said at a press conference Wednesday afternoon.

Byrd appeared to be under the influence of a narcotic, Ambrose said, adding that police found drug paraphernalia at the scene. He didn't immediately provide additional details, but sources tells News 4 the driver had a bag of heroin clutched in her hand.

One witness said the driver looked as if she "couldn't move, like she was having a heart attack or a stroke."

Byrd was taken to University Hospital for treatment, Ambrose said. She has been charged with 12 counts of endangering the welfare of a child, possession of drug paraphernalia and driving while impaired, he said. It wasn't immediately clear if she had an attorney.

Ambrose said Byrd's driver's license was suspended between 1996 and 2006, but couldn't immediately say why it had been suspended.

The children on the bus were "shaken up" and taken to local hospitals for observation, but released to their parents soon after, Ambrose said.

"I know it is an epidemic, but it's also a sickness," he said. "A person driving a bus, or a person driving, period, I would like to see our legislators look at it better and give more serious penalties to people that do this."

Newark Mayor Ras Baraka added he was outraged.

The crash is under investigation.

Man, Woman Arrive at Hospital, Say They Were Shot on I-95

Two people showed up at a Philadelphia hospital with gunshot wounds to the legs that they told police were caused by someone firing on them along Interstate 95.

The 24-year-old man and 25-year-old woman showed up Wednesday night to Temple University Hospital's Episcopal Campus and told officers someone shot up their SUV on I-95, near Allegheny Avenue in the Kensington neighborhood, police said. According to authorities, though, they never called 911 right after the shooting.

The man was driving the SUV and the woman was sitting in the rear driver's side when someone pulled up alongside them in a second, dark-colored SUV and opened fire around 9:45 p.m., Philadelphia Police Department Chief Inspector Scott Small said.

After arriving to the hospital - located about two miles from where the alleged shooting occurred - a third person who was in the vehicle but uninjured by the gunfire drove the bullet-riddled SUV away, but police later pulled the vehicle over when they noticed five bullet holes on the driver's side, Small said.

Police are interviewing the man and the woman to try to gather more information about why someone would have shot them, the chief inspector said. They are looking for a black SUV and also reviewing footage from cameras on I-95 to help them in their investigation.

Biden Closer to a White House Bid But Serious Concerns Remain

Former Vice President Joe Biden wants to be president and is closer every day to being ready for a bid. But he's considering what would happen if the president or his allies make his family an issue in the campaign, NBC News reported.

Aides close to Biden and other people he's recently spoken to say Biden's candidacy is a matter of when, not if — one aide called it a "slow boil" since the start of the year.

He is clear-eyed about the challenge of running and doesn't assume he would win the primary, even though he's confident he offers Democrats the best opponent to Trump, according to sources close to Biden.

But Biden, who recently said that "everything revolves around family," must still have gut-check conversations with his children and grandchildren. His inner circle has discussed how Biden would need to react to a comment about the family, still reeling from the death of Beau Biden, from President Donald Trump.

Hepatitis A Outbreak Strikes Gloucester County

$

Health officials in New Jersey are urging people to get vaccinated amid an outbreak of Hepatitis A in Gloucester County.

The county has seen eight cases of the viral infection in the last nine weeks alone, county spokeswoman Debra Sellitto said in a news release. In a typical year, Gloucester County usually gets less than 10, she said.

The recent cases are unconnected to one another and have cropped up in different cities throughout the county. The infected are all adults over the age of 25, Sellitto said.

To combat the outbreak, the Gloucester County Department of Public Health is offering free Hepatitis A vaccinations to those who don't have insurance. People can call the health department at 856-218-4101 to make a vaccination appointment.

Hepatitis A infects the liver and is usually spread when someone unknowingly ingests the virus through food, drinks or other items contaminated with "small, undetected" amounts of fecal matter from an infected person, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The virus can also spread from "close personal contact with an infected person such as through sex or caring for someone who is ill," according to the CDC. In rare cases, it can be fatal.

Symptoms of the infection include fever, fatigue, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, dark urine and yellowing of the skin and eyes, the CDC says. People can reduce their chance of infection by thoroughly washing their hands after using the bathroom and before handling food.

Those with the highest risk of contracting Hepatitis A include the homeless, those who use injected or non-injected street drugs, men who have sex with other men and people who have direct contact with an infected person, the CDC says.

"If you are a person that is in one of those risk factor groups, get vaccinated," Sellitto said.
