Homeless Vet in Alleged GoFundMe Scheme Freed Pending Trial

One of the men behind an alleged scheme to scam thousands of GoFundMe donors out of more than $400,000 will remain free pending the date of his trial.

Johnny Bobbitt was granted temporary freedom after facing a judge during a detention hearing Friday at the Burlington County Superior Court. His release is predicated on a plea deal with prosecutors.

The homeless veteran is facing conspiracy and theft charges.

Prosecutors say Bobbitt conspired with Katelyn McClure and her former boyfriend, Mark D'Amico, to make up a story in which Bobbitt gave McLure his last $20 when her car ran out of gas.

The feel-good story went viral before unravelling as the trio became embroiled in a bitter court battle in which Bobbitt accused the couple of keeping the donations all to themselves.

Prosecutors say McLure and D'Amico spent the money on luxury items and casino trips.

McLure maintains that D'Amico masterminded the alleged scheme.

Bobbitt's temporary release comes after prosecutors reached a plea deal with his public defender.

The prosecution had been pushing for detention, but granted Bobbitt his pretrial freedom after he agreed to apply to drug court and showed a willingness to plead guilty to drug and other charges, said Bobbitt lawyer Jay Keesler.

As part of the plea deal, Bobbitt must submit to pretrial monitoring, remain arrest-free, seek drug and alcohol treatment and avoid contact with McLure and D'Amico.

His next court date is scheduled for February 2019.

Pederson: Wentz Has 'Stress Injury'; Surgery Not Required

After days of speculation in the media and among fans, Eagles Coach Doug Pederson said today that quarterback Carson Wentz has a 'stress injury' that has 'evolved' over time -- and won't require surgery.

Pederson said Wentz was officially questionable to play Sunday in a critical game against the Rams. However, team sources have said that the Eagles have already decided backup QB Nick Foles will play instead of Wentz because of Wentz's trouble with his back.

Wentz is "listed as questionable and that's how it is," Pederson told reporters. The coach seemed testy about the speculation around his star quarterback.

Pederson also said it wasn't clear when the injury occurred.

"You're asking when it happened and for something to evolve, it takes time," he said. "There were no symptoms, he was 100 percent, he practiced."

He also refused to connect the injury to Wentz's play over the past several games. "We saw the missed throws but we're not linking the two together, we just have to get better at the throw," he said.

He added that Wentz will travel with the team.

How to Talk to Children About Dangerous 'Momo Challenge'

Professionals are warning parents that they should talk to their kids as a new viral challenge spreads across social media and puts children in potential danger.

The "Momo Challenge" is an online cyberbullying game targeting young kids and teenagers through Facebook and WhatsApp. It threatens children with violence if they don't commit potentially dangerous activities.

Children who participate in the challenge are first sent a message with a photo of a woman with bulging eyes, an elongated face and a large, contorted smile.

Accompanying the photo is a message that directs children to commit various acts - some simple, some more violent - and show photographic proof of those acts or risk being harmed.

NBC10 spoke to one young New Jersey boy who was sent the photo by a classmate.

"Momo stabs you with a knife when you're sleeping at night," said the boy, who is not being identified by NBC10 because of his age.

The game has reportedly been linked to suicides in other countries but authorities have not offered proof of that connection.

In New Jersey, the Cape May Police Department posted a Facebook message to parents warning that, "This 'game' is believed to be a way for people to hack accounts and is psychologically manipulative towards kids and teens."

Meghan Walls, a pediatric psychologist, says parents should take preemptive action and gently ask their younger children if they know about the challenge.

"Say something like, 'There's some scary things that pop up on phones and tablets, and if you ever see something like that, come get me,'" Walls said.

When it comes to older kids, Walls said it's not realistic for parents to threaten to take their phones away, but they should have an open dialogue with their children.

Parents should let those older kids know that the challenge is cyberbullying, it's potentially dangerous and that they're trusting their kids to let them know what's going on.

"Especially as kids get older and they're teenagers, they want some of that autonomy and they deserve some of that autonomy as long as they can show you they're responsible enough," Wells said.

A New Jersey high school has suspended its wrestling program after four students were charged with aggravated assault for an alleged hazing incident that happened inside a school shower.

The incident involves members of the Schalick High School wrestling team allegedly stripping another student in the school's shower area Saturday during weigh-ins. The teens restrained the student and threatening to assault their victim with a broomstick, Salem County Prosecutor John T. Lenahan said.

The incident was first reported to state police Monday night.

By Friday, Pittsgrove Township School District Superintendent Scott Hoopes announced the suspension of the school's wrestling program.

"I am writing to notify you that, due to certain events which are now the subject of multiple investigations, the wrestling program is suspended effective immediately," Hoopes said in a message to parents and students on the wrestling team.

The four students in question have also been charged with conspiracy to commit aggravated assault, criminal restraint, conspiracy to commit criminal restraint, hazing, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, conspiracy to possess a weapon for an unlawful purpose, unlawful possession of a weapon and conspiracy to unlawfully possess a weapon.

The names of the suspects have not been released because they are all minors. Hoopes said he couldn't comment on whether or not the accused students will be allowed back in school.

The New Jersey State Police, Salem County Prosecutor's Office and Pittsgrove Township School District are investigating.

Anyone with information about the case is asked to contact the New Jersey State Police at 856-451 0101.

Holly, Jolly, Trolley-day: SEPTA Brightens Commuter Spirits

Holiday cheer is great and all, but time and trains stop for no man. And for some busy Philly residents, their commute and their Christmas spirit just don't line up.

For SEPTA, the solution seems simple: combine the two.

The transit authority is decorating its trains. The “Western Holiday Express," a series of cars designed as an old-fashioned Western train and filled with presents, hay, ornaments, and a full Christmas tree, took its place on the Regional Rail, Platform 0, in Suburban Station this past month. Half pop-up, half exhibit, it can be visited anytime 12-4 p.m on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

But SEPTA’s spread of holiday cheer expands past stationary train cars and into the community, as well. Local trolleys decorated by operators Gary Mason and Dave Musgrave use sparkling garlands, strings of lights, and shining ornaments to make the season a little brighter for their passengers.

The festive trolleys run on weekdays and can be found on two routes. The first (Trolley #9011), operates on route 15 from Monday to Friday from 12:24 to 10:49 a.m. The second (Trolley #9055), operates on Route 36, Monday through Friday, from 10:56 a.m. to 8:40 p.m.

Oh, and one more Philly special: this Saturday, Dec. 15., an exclusive SEPTA Holiday Trolley will also make trips from the 40th Street Trolley Portal to 15th Street Station every 30 minutes from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; it’s part of the holiday celebration at the Trolley Portal Gardens. (LINK). Kids ages 4 to 16 get to ride the trolley for free, while the Trolley Car Station will offer $1 hot chocolate and spiked hot cocoa – fun for the whole family!
