Frigid Thanksgiving: First Alert for Extreme Cold

        Cold turkey!

That’s how it’s going to feel on Thanksgiving as an Arctic blast moves in for the holiday.

The NBC10 First Alert Weather Team issued a First Alert for extreme cold for the entire region for Thanksgiving into Black Friday. Records could fall for the coldest Thanksgiving on record.

“Thanksgiving day will be especially cold,” NBC10 First Alert Weather meteorologist Bill Henley said.

It will feel like 0 to 5 degrees on Thanksgiving morning, Bill said. So wear the heavy coat, scarf and gloves if you are heading to the parade or high school football game.

“If you don’t start bundled up you are going to have problems,” Bill said.

The high temps will actually reach the 20s under sunny skies later on Thanksgiving but the slight breeze will make it feel like the teens in most places.

Winds begin to pick up Wednesday as temps dip Wednesday night as old friends gather for pre-thanksgiving get-togethers. It will feel like the teens late Wednesday night, Bill said.

The chilly temps continue into Friday morning. Black Friday shoppers will have temps warm into the 30s later in the day.

The cold remains Saturday morning. That could be problematic as wet weather moves in later in the day. But, Bill says temps should warm into the 50s meaning rain is most likely.

Showers are also expected Sunday and Monday.

Keep checking back with the NBC10 First Alert Weather Team on NBC10 News on television and in our app throughout Thanksgiving week for the latest on the bitter cold and showers to come.

Sources: 1 Shot Dead at Burning Mansion, 2 More Bodies Found

Four bodies have been found at a burning New Jersey mansion, one of whom had been shot, officials said Tuesday.

More to come. Watch live news conference in video player above.

        Earlier:

It is unclear if the two bodies found inside died from a gunshot wound or from the fire that ripped through the Colts Neck mansion on Willow Brook Road around 1:30 p.m.

The identities of the victims are unknown at this time. The Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office confirmed in a tweet there were "multiple fatalities" but did not provide any more details.

Investigators are trying to determine how at least one person at the scene was shot.

Since Colts Neck doesn’t have fire hydrants, tanker trucks full of water raced to help.

Video from Chopper 4 at the scene early Tuesday afternoon showed thick black smoke billowing from the sprawling modern-style compound as firefighters worked to contain the blaze.

Neighbors in the affluent Colts Neck town say they are devestated about the loss of life at the home, especially so close to Thanksgiving.

Law enforcement sources also confirm a second fire at the Ocean Township home of a brother of someone who lives at the Colts Neck mansion.

Ocean Township police and fire officials confirmed an arson at a Tilton Drive home. The fire was reported shortly after 5 a.m. Tuesday.

Everyone at that home evacuated safely, according to officials.

Investigators at the Ocean Township scene discovered several gas cans in the rear of the house.

Police are investigating if the fires are connected.

State fire investigators are trying to determine if the Colts Neck fire is also a result of arson.

        Philadelphia’s Brightest Holiday Traditions

        0

If you’re all about the seasonal celebration but don’t know where to start, don’t worry - NBC10 has rounded up the best and the brightest holiday traditions in the area. Here’s our guide to experiencing the spirit of the season, Philly style.

The Comcast Holiday Spectacular, a Philly tradition on the Comcast Experience video wall, is celebrating its 10th year. The display, which features holiday scenes, songs, and a short performance of “The Nutcracker” by the Pennsylvania Ballet, runs hourly every day from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., starting Thanksgiving Day and ending New Year’s Day. Visitors can use the hashtag #Spectacular to share their photos and reactions to the show. Oh, and don’t miss the larger-than-life Grinch Snow Globe just outside on the Comcast Plaza. (Comcast is the parent company of NBC10.)

For an assortment of holiday-related, centrally-located activities, head to Dilworth Park on the west side of Philadelphia City Hall. You can go ice skating at the Rothman Park, check out crafts at the Made in Philadelphia Holiday Market, stroll through lighted greenery at Wintergarden or watch the Deck the Hall light show, which runs daily from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Plus, just across the street is a traditional German Christmas Village in LOVE Park, a kid- and dog-friendly place to buy gifts, sample authentic European foods and watch local holiday performances.

On the other side of Philly's city Hall, you’ll find another set of holiday traditions: the Macy’s lineup. Featuring a series of lighted windows on Market St., a teddy bear workshop at the Dickens Christmas Village, and the famous Wanamaker Grand Court light show, the displays – some of which date back to the 1950s – are now iconic in local holiday history.

From Macy’s, it’s only a hop, skip, and a jump to The Electrical Spectacle holiday light show in Franklin Square. The 75,000-light show illuminates the park to a soundtrack of holiday favorites every night from Nov. 15 to Dec. 31. In between displays, viewers can warm their hands by the fire pits, taste sweet treats in a heated tent and ride the Lightning Bolt Holiday Express Train around the square.

Starting Nov. 23, visitors can hop on the Philly PHLASH’s holiday loop, which runs every 15 minutes from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. From Franklin Square, it’s a quick trip to WinterFest at the Blue Cross RiverRink. The winter park includes an ice rink, warming cabins, a lodge and a confectionery cabin – and it’s open every single day, including holidays, from Nov. 23 through March 3.

If you’re looking for something a little more “neighborhood Christmas display," try The Miracle on South 13th Street, which is the 17th annual holiday lights display on the 1600 South Philly block. Each home is decorated to reflect its resident’s personal taste, and it’s not uncommon to see Santa and his crew hanging out between Tasker and Morris streets.

Further out of Center City, you can check out the miniature trains at the Morris Arboretum Holiday Garden Railway up in Northwest Philly, the gingerbread house competition and Santa parades during Christmas in Peddler’s Village, and the illuminated trees at A Longwood Christmas in Kennett Square.

Don’t forget to bundle up, and have fun in the most wonderful time of the year!

Lidl, a global discount supermarket chain, just announced a store opening in Folsom.

The new location, at 420 MacDade Blvd., is Lidl’s first store in the state. It’ll join a network of more than 50 American Lidl stores in Delaware, Georgia, New Jersey, North and South Carolina and Virginia.

Doors will open to the public on Dec. 5 at 8 a.m. after a ribbon-cutting ceremony. New customers will be met by samples, games, prizes, giveaways and free reusable Lidl bags while supplies last.

As a Philly native, store manager Ken Abernathy said he’s happy to introduce shoppers in the area to Lidl.

“My team and I are looking forward to serving the community,” Abernathy said.

A German-based grocery brand, Lidl operates more than 10,000 stores in 29 countries. Aldi, one of its prime competitors, already runs multiple stores in the Philadelphia area.

Police are searching for a man who they say robbed a Dollar General store in Burlington City, New Jersey, while armed with a butcher knife.

The incident occurred at the Dollar General on Route 130, Saturday at 1:17 p.m. Police say the unidentified suspect entered the store, climbed on the counter and threatened Bryana Bowe, the store manager, with a knife.

The suspect then told Bowe, “Give me the money unless you want to die,” investigators said.

Bowe told NBC10 she thought the man was joking at first.

“I thought, 'He has to be playing around.' And then I took a second look at the knife. I was like, ‘Oh, that’s a real knife,’” she said.

The suspect then snatched $200 from the cash register before fleeing the scene.

“Very aggressive robbery,” Burlington City Police Capt. John Fine said. “No gloves, no mask. We hope someone in the public can identify this individual so we can get them off the street.”

The suspect is described as a bald, white male with facial hair. He was last seen wearing a dark sweatshirt and jeans.

If you have any information on his identity, please call Burlington City Police.

High Price for Some Immigrants Seeking Political Asylum

Alberto Mendoza escaped Honduras for the United States in 2016, seeking political asylum.

The 26-year-old living in Philadelphia was arrested by immigration agents, however, and faced a difficult decision: remain jailed for years while awaiting an asylum hearing or be bailed out.

Libre by Nexus, a private company that guarantees bonds to courts on behalf of undocumented immigrants, did just that for Mendoza's $10,000 bond. He was free to go, with one exception: Mendoza must wear an electronic monitoring device on his ankle.

WATCH LIVE: Tune to NBC10 News at 5 p.m. for an in-depth look at Libre by Nexus, and an interview with the company's CEO. Or watch a livestream of the broadcast on our app.

And the freedom afforded him by Libre by Nexus came with a high cost. He has been paying $420 a month to the company to lease that GPS device.

He blamed the company for confusing him at the time he signed the deal with Libre by Nexus.

"They never said I would be paying for the device," he told NBC10 Investigators. "They never told me that."

The CEO of Nexus, the parent company of Libre, disputed Mendoza's recollection of how the contract for the $10,000 bond was presented to the Honduran native.

"We explain the program to our clients, and here’s why," CEO Mike Donovan said. "We care about our clients and we want them to be successful."

The contract does explicitly mention the expensive lease for the device, though most of the agreement is in English. It's a language Mendoza doesn't speak or read.

Here is the exact wording in the contract:

You are required to wear a GPS tracking device until one of the following occurs: 1) Your case before the Immigration Court is complete 2) You remit collateral in the amount of $10,000 to replace collateral pledged by Nexus Programs”You are required to make payments for the lease of the GPS equipment and for the GPS monitoring service. The amount of the monthly lease payments are $420. These payments are due on the 1st of each month, for as long as you wear the GPS bracelet.

The company has recently made changes to the way it presents contracts to prospective clients whose first language is Spanish, and has improved the GPS devices.

The entire agreement is in Spanish now, and the devices are being upgraded to wristbands, which aren't as onerous or embarrassing as the ankle device.

"We’ve updated contracts and updated devices," Donovan said in an interview. "It’s because every business grows and evolves."

Mendoza, meanwhile, has an updated contract. He now pays $400 a month, and the payments are going toward paying down the $10,000 that Libre by Nexus guaranteed for him with federal immigration court.
