Del. Church Group Returns After Being Stranded in Haiti

There were cheers, tears and hugs as members of a Delaware church group who were stranded in Haiti amid violent protests reunited with their loved ones at Philadelphia International Airport Wednesday.

NBC10 was there as 15 teens and five adults from Cornerstone United Methodist Church in Bear, Delaware, were greeted by their cheering family members holding up signs at baggage claim.

"Just overwhelmed with joy," Rebecka Runner-Draper, the mom of one of the teens, told NBC10. "So happy that she's here."

Cornerstone Pastor Roger Frederick led the group on a week-long mission trip to Haiti last week.

During their stay, Haiti’s government announced an increase in gasoline prices in which a liter of regular gas would cost nearly $5. The announcement sparked violent protests as people reportedly burned tires and vandalized businesses in Haiti’s capital. At least three people were killed.

With the situation still chaotic, the U.S. Embassy in Port-au-Prince on Sunday warned U.S. citizens to shelter in place.

“They were burning tires in the streets and they couldn’t travel safely,” Pastor Paul Owens of Cornerstone United Methodist Church, said. “I guess the embassy said stay in place, be safe where you’re at. Don’t try to go out.”

Runner-Draper's daughter Elli said they were a good distance away from the violence as they hunkered down in a compound.

"They did such an amazing job keeping us safe and the neighbors as well," she said. "They were so kind to us. They brought us food, they made us a whole dinner, because they knew we were missing home."

Passengers traveling to and from Haiti from the United States were on standby, as some airlines canceled flights due to the violence. Flight arrangements for the group were pushed to Monday, then Tuesday and finally Wednesday when they departed.

"It was a little nerve-wracking," Karianne Opalach said. "But I'm just beyond grateful to be home right now."

Karianne's mother Sue Opalach was there to greet her daughter at the airport.

"I can't thank the Haitian people enough," Sue Opalach said. "It's a wonderful group of people. They're very loving and very caring."

Even after their experience, the teens in the group say they want to go back to Haiti to do more mission work.

"I'm really glad to be home but I also can't wait to go back," Elli Runner-Draper said. "So this isn't going to deter me from going back."

Villanova U Minister Accused of Using Kik to View Child Porn

A Villanova University campus minister is accused of using a popular mobile messaging app to view child porn.

Timothy O’Connell, 51, of Drexel Hill, Pennsylvania, was arrested and charged with child pornography.

O’Connell’s arrest was the result of an FBI investigation on another suspect who O’Connell was allegedly in contact with. Police say O’Connell received sexually explicit images of children from another man identified as Justyn Perez-Colon in February. The images were shared via the mobile messaging app Kik, according to an affidavit.

O’Connell allegedly described an explicit image of a young girl as “very hot” and “very nice.” Investigators also say O’Connell used prepaid phones to view the child porn in order to hide it from his family.

Perez-Colon was arrested on Feb. 14 and charged with production of child pornography and distribution of child pornography. Investigators obtained the cellphones Perez-Colon used to send the child porn to other people, including O’Connell, officials said.

On Friday, investigators obtained warrants to search O’Connell’s Drexel Hill home, Villanova University office and his two vehicles.

On Tuesday, O’Connell was taken into custody and allegedly confessed to FBI officials to receiving the child porn from Perez-Colon. O’Connell also admitted to being sexually attracted to a girl in the 3rd grade who he babysat, according to the affidavit.

O’Connell worked as a campus minister at Villanova University for seven years. Investigators say he used the school’s secured internet account to access Kik.

“Villanova University is appalled and horrified by these allegations,” a spokesperson for the school said. “The university has suspended this individual and he is not permitted to return to campus.”

O’Connell's neighbor spoke to NBC10 about the allegations.

“I don’t know how true any of this is,” she said. “It’s unbelievable. They are very nice people. And we’re shocked.”

If convicted, O’Connell, who has a wife and two sons, could face up to ten years behind bars.

A passenger who had jumped out of a car after it overturned on the Pennsylvania Turnpike died after being struck by a passing tractor-trailer.

The 25-year-old man from Brooklyn, New York, and two other people got out of their Hyundai Sonata after it overturned near milepost 291.4 in Lancaster County around 2:20 a.m. Thursday, Pennsylvania State Police said.

A Ford Mustang and a commercial vehicle stopped at the scene to help out, police said.

A UPS big rig then struck the overturned car and Mustang on the highway between the Morgantown (298) and Reading (286) interchanges, killing the 25-year-old man, police said.

The two other people who got out of the Sonata ran off, troopers said.

Pennsylvania State Police warned drivers to use alternate routes as they expected the road to be closed until at least 8 a.m. (It still remained closed at 8:30 a.m.) All vehicles were forced off the road at Morgantown.

The Pennsylvania Turnpike tweeted this detour: "Take State Route 10 SB (1 mile) to State Route 23 WB (8 miles) to US Route 322 WB (8 miles) to Route 222 NB (5 miles). Re-enter PA Turnpike at the Reading Exit (286)."

No word yet if any charges will be filed.

'Extreme Crowds' Force Build-a-Bear to Close Lines on 'Pay Your Age Day'

After Build-a-Bear Workshop offered customers the chance to pay their age for any stuffable animal, the company was forced to close its lines at all U.S. and Canadian workshops as "extreme crowds" filled shopping centers and lines wrapped around stores and buildings.

The company said in a statement on its website that the response to the company's first-of-its-kind sale "has been overwhelming and unprecedented in our 21-year history." It added that at the request of local authorities, new customers were not being accepted at stores over safety concerns.

"The crowds have greatly exceeded our expectations," Build-a-Bear said, adding that they are working to address the situation and reach out to affected customers.

With kids and adults hoping to get a customizable animal for cheap, social media posts showed local workshops stuffed with eager customers and throngs of people spilling into the hallways of malls.

The Otay Ranch Town Center in Chula Vista, California, posted Build-a-Bear's statement to its Facebook page and customers replied confused and upset.

"The store or the mall should give out vouchers for customers to return at a later date to obtain their bear. Seems a bit unfair, and both entities should have prepared for a response like this when offering this type of promotion," one Facebook user wrote on the post.

Police could be seen responding to the winding line at Orland Square Mall in Illinois, NBC Chicago reported.

It was not immediately clear if Build-a-Bear planned to reopen lines as they lessened or if any future discounts would be offered.

The discount was also being offered at U.K. stores. Police said lines formed at a workshop in England "about a mile long," the BBC reported. Several stores closed for the rest of the day due to the crowds.

The sale allowed customers to choose any of the "furry friends" available at local workshops and pay their age number for it. The company said no one would pay more than $29 for a bear on the special date — regardless if the purchaser is in their 30's or older. Build-a-Bear required no identification or proof of age.

The day-long event was set to serve as a kickoff for a larger, year-round celebration of birthdays in which those 14 and under can receive a "Count Their Candles" invite. Kids can pay their age for a special bear during their birthday month.

"We have overwhelming data that indicates Build-A-Bear is synonymous with childhood, and nearly one-third of our sales are associated with birthdays," said president and chief executive officer of Build-A-Bear-Workshop Sharon Price John.

Fortnite Season 5 Arrives: What You Should Know

$

0

After weeks of hype and bringing items from the online game into the real world, Season 5 of Fortnite has arrived.

For those who haven’t yet joined the craze, Fortnite is a game available on consoles, PC and mobile where 100 players drop from a flying school bus, collect guns and resources to fight and build structures (hence the "fort") and fight to be the last player standing.

Thousands of Fortnite gameplays can be found on YouTube or the popular livestreaming website Twitch.tv, which is owned by Amazon.

This time, the popular multi-player "battle royale" game has upgraded its map, added new cosmetic skins and items in the new update.

In Season 4, players watched a rocket launch into the sky while they were battling to eliminate 99 other players in the game. That rocket exploded and appeared to have caused a worm hole, bringing items from other eras like a viking ship, an ATV and even a Moai statue.

Players can still enjoy the game for free and they're able to purchase V-Bucks to get access to Season 5 Battle Pass. The pass cost 950 V-Bucks which is around $10.

Some gamers might opt to spending more to earn a higher tier because a Battle Pass will start you off at level 1. Players will gain more access to over 100 new items as they level up and complete challenges.

If you're wondering why your children can't seem to stop playing this game, challenges are different every season and every week. They vary from simple things like killing five opponents with a pistol to opening loot chests at different locations in the map.

The game gives different rewards for each challenge completed. This season, players can even unlock an exclusive outfit by completing special challenges.

One of the biggest changes in Season 5 is the addition of "toys." Players can conjure up a golf ball and a beach ball to actually play at the new "points of interest" in the arena.

Fortnite has gotten rid of older points of interest, where players would land and collect firearms and other items that will help them win the game, to keep the game fresh for veteran players.

The game made $233 million in March, CNBC reported, and its popularity doesn't appear to be slowing down any time soon.

Fortnite has millions of players. Many are children younger than 16, and they can be seen as easy targets for hackers and scammers. Epic Games, the developer of Fortnite, has been warning players to be aware of scams around free or discounted V-Bucks.

NJ GOP House Candidate Unapologetic Over Racial Comments

$

Seth Grossman, a longtime criminal lawyer from Atlantic City and Republican candidate for South Jersey's 2nd congressional district, is unapologetic over the newest example in a string of unsettling social media comments about blacks and Islam.

"I'm getting barraged with hate mail and hate messages. But when you check the addresses, most of it is coming from hundreds of miles away from the district, most of it from California or even Canada," Grossman told NBC10 in an interview Wednesday.Grossman said. "Most people I talk to in the district know I bring up these issues because I want to solve the problem."

His self-defense came two days after an article posted by Media Matters, a liberal watchdog group, showed that Grossman in the past promoted two white nationalist groups' posts on social media. In one post he shared, an opinion piece reportedly described black people as "a threat to all who cross their paths."

He defended his record as a longtime attorney serving minority communities in Atlantic City and Pleasantville.

"I want to make minorities more prosperous and independent, and you can't fix a problem without talking about it," he said.

In June, news  sites reported that a liberal political action committee had recorded Grossman saying, "The whole idea of diversity is a bunch of crap and un-American."

The National Republican Congressional Committee, the super PAC that supports House candidates' bids, said through its chairman that Grossman would no longer be endorsed. In a particularly stinging criticism, NRCC Chairman Steve Stivers asked Grossman "to reconsider his candidacy."

"The people of New Jersey's 2nd District deserve an inclusive Republican candidate who will be a trusted conservative voice in Congress," Stivers said Tuesday in a statement.

Grossman said he's not dropping out of the race, which pits him against Democratic state Sen. Jeff Van Drew in the November general election. The two face off for a seat long held by retiring Republican U.S. Rep. Frank LoBiondo. The coveted open seat is seen as one of numerous crucial swing districts that will determine which political party controls Congress next year.

Van Drew, a dentist from Dennis Township, was already the favorite before national Republicans publicly pulled support, according to political observers. The Democrat also held a 40-to-1 advantage in cash on hand at the end of the last campaign finance cycle that ended in May. Van Drew had $416,000 compared to Grossman's $10,800.

Grossman told NBC10 that he has raised $55,000 since May. The next campaign finance reports are due July 15.

Grossman, who previously served as an Atlantic City councilman and Atlantic County freeholder, said neither support nor money would stop his campaign from competing for the House seat.

"In a way, nothing has changed ever since I became a candidate. I felt the voters were with me but the national and state organizations were embarrassed by me," he said. "Because I was speaking talking about issues that the voters want to talk about and not trying to avoid anything controversial."

He said his path to victory is through Trump supporters and winning over the very minority voters disparaged in social media posts he has shared.

"When you take two dozens posts out of maybe 6,000 posts or shares over a 10-year period, it looks inflammatory, which is why they do it," Grossman said. "But if you look at each post and the news I was reacting to, it’s just reasonable commonsense comments."

Philly Parking Authority Facing Audit by City Controller

$

As concerns over salaries rise within the Philadelphia Parking Authority and funding toward the public schools allegedly drops, the city controller  and Pennsylvania auditor general announced Wednesday that they would team up to audit the authority.

Over the next seven to 10 months, the Philadelphia City Controller's Office will evaluate the validity and effectiveness of the PPA's on-street parking expenses. They will also include a comparison of the PPA's operations to other large cities.

"Over the last few years, aggressive ticketing practices, frustration over the amount of funding provided to the school district, and revelations about workplace culture problems – including sexual harassment and excessive pay and benefits – has left many Philadelphians distrustful of the Philadelphia Parking Authority," Controller Rebecca Rhynhart said.

In December, the Pennsylvania State Auditor General's Office identified 11 findings and made more than 117 recommendations to improve the PPA's overall operations. Hiring processes, uncollected parking fees and inaccurate revenue projections were among the issues listed in the report.

Additionally, the audit addressed concerns of sexual harassment at the PPA, including claims against the former executive director and other staff.

"Auditing PPA was a huge undertaking and we helped get the agency started in a better direction. I'm happy to support Controller Rhynhart’s ambitious initiative to dig even deeper so that we can make sure as much funding as possible goes toward improving local schools," DePasquale said.

Following the audit announcement, City Councilwoman Helen Gym issued a statement in support of the upcoming investigation.

"I look forward to finally having a full analysis of the ballooning expenses and administrative bloat of this agency, and partnering with Controller Rhynhart and Auditor General DePasquale to ensure the PPA is held accountable to the people Philadelphia," Gym stated.

The PPA responded to the audit announcement by saying it was looking "forward to working with the city controller to continue making the PPA more efficient and customer-friendly."

The investigation, which is set to begin in August, is the first controller's audit of the PPA since 2009.

We all love ice cream, but how many of us really know how the delicious dairy dessert goes from the farm to the freezer?

On Thursday, Gov. Tom Wolf's administration launched Pennsylvania's first ever Pursue Your Scoops Ice Cream Trail at Fox Meadows Creamery in Ephrata, Lancaster County.

This program invites visitors to a "true farm-to-scoop" experience at 12 participating farms across seven southeastern Pennsylvania counties.

Guests will be able to earn prizes by checking off their visits on a passport as they move along the trail.

"We are all in the business of happiness, and there are few things that put a bigger smile on one’s face more than ice cream," Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture Deputy Secretary Carrie Fischer Lepore said. "The Pursue Your Scoops Ice Cream Trail provides the farm experiences our travelers crave while adding an extra scoop to the local economy."

Among the farms participating are Freddy Hill Farms and Merrymead Farm in Montgomery County; Coventry Parlor at Laurel Locks and Chester Springs Creamery at Milky Way Farm in Chester County; Crystal Spring Farm in Lehigh County; and Twilight Acres Creamery & Bakery and Way-Har Farms in Berks County.

The dairy industry is the largest sector of Pennsylvania's $135.7 billion agriculture industry, contributing $14.7 billion annually and supporting more than 50,000 jobs, the state said.

Nine days of closures and repairs, diverted trolley routes and tent shelters at transfer sites are some of what SEPTA passengers can expect when the 2018 Trolley Tunnel Blitz begins Friday.

The blitz will allow SEPTA to perform critical repair and maintenance work on the Center City tunnel. The goal is to finish as much repair work as possible in a limited time.

During the blitz, routes 10, 11, 13, 34 and 36 will not operate in the tunnel from 10 p.m. Friday through 5 a.m. July 23.

The routes will divert to 40th and Market streets where customers can use the Market-Frankford Line to get into Center City.

Late-night travelers can get to Center City using the Market-Frankford Line Night Owl Bus Service on the weekdays or the all-night Market-Frankford service on the weekends.

Tents will be set up as temporary shelters for passengers transferring from the trolleys to the Market-Frankford line.

2018 marks the fifth consecutive summer that SEPTA has held a Trolley Tunnel Blitz. The around-the-clock work allows SEPTA to repair and maintain trolley lines, many of which run 24 hours a day, during the summer when ridership is low.

During this year’s nine-day tunnel closure, crews will remove nearly 15,000 feet of retired steel piping and communication cable, replace track wiring and perform maintenance and testing on switches.

Trolley stations will also be cleaned, repaired and painted during the Blitz.

Passengers should look for signs posted at 40th Street and throughout the system for additional information to help them navigate during the Blitz. They can also visit TransitView for additional, real-time information.

Three Local Waterparks Splash into 'Best in the USA' List

Love getting wet? Several of U.S. News' Top 30 Best Water Parks in the USA are within driving distance of Philadelphia.

Six Flags Hurricane Harbor, Camelbeach at Camelback Lodge, and The Boardwalk at Hersheypark all made their way onto the list for 2018.

Camelbeach is Pennsylvania's biggest outdoor water park, with 37 rides. Camelbeach opened its newest thrill ride, High Noon Typhoon, Wednesday afternoon.

Located at the highest point of the mountainside waterpark, High Noon Typhoon starts six stories above ground and plunges riders in an inner tube onto a path of both enclosed and open-air segments. The slide tilts and turns along a winding path before shooting riders from the tube into a pool at the finish.

"Camelbeach delivers a combination of thrill and relaxation for all ages, in a family-friendly mountain setting and we couldn’t be prouder to have been chosen," said Ame Cameron, Camelback's vice president of sales and marketing.

Although it's known for its impressive Chocolate Factory, The Boardwalk at Hersheypark includes 17 attractions inside an 11-acre water park. It also made the list as one of the best wet amusement parks in the country.

Two new rides help make The Boardwalk an even bigger attraction this summer: WhiteCap Racer is the world's longest mat racing slide and allows six guests to compete against one another with a timing system that records the results.

Joining Whitecap Racer is Hersheypark's first hydromagnetic coaster, Breakers Edge, which features flying saucer turns and rafts for two or four people.

Six Flags Hurricane Harbor, which combines the thrill of rollercoasters with the relaxation of a swimming pool, was the area's third pick on U.S. News' list of the best water parks across the country.
