Police are searching for two gunmen who robbed a father and son inside their grocery store in the Germantown section of Philadelphia Tuesday night.

The armed men entered the Lopez Grocery store on the 5200 block of Laurens Street at 8:30 p.m. and approached Cornelio Mezquita, the 42-year-old owner of the store, along with his 18-year-old son.

"They told me, 'Don't move. Get on the ground. Give me the money,'" Mezquita said.

Surveillance video shows one of the men attack and wrestle Mezquita's son.

The suspects stole an undetermined amount of money as well as Mezquita's gun before fleeing the scene on foot.

No one was seriously hurt during the incident and no shots were fired.

The first suspect is described as a stocky man standing 5-foot-10 wearing a dark-colored jacket with white stripes down the sleeves, a white face mask and black sneakers.

The second suspect is described as a man standing 5-foot-7 and wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and black sneakers.

Police are also searching for a person of interest who was spotted in the store just before the robbery. He’s described as a man with a stocky build standing between 5-foot-10 and 6-feet in his mid to late 20s, wearing a black t-shirt with the logo “RAW” on it, dark-colored pants and black sneakers.

Nonprofit Animal Emergency Relief Service Receives Huge Gift

There were smiles all around on Wednesday when a Philadelphia-based nonprofit organization received a huge check worth $100,000.

Red Paw Emergency Relief Team secured the top donation from NRG Gives, a program implemented by Philly-based energy supply company NRG.

The program, which began in 2016, allows NRG employees to nominate three local nonprofits. The public then has eight days to vote on the charity they want to receive the top donation. The nonprofit with the most votes receives $100,000.

Red Paw, this year's winner, is an emergency services nonprofit organization catered toward pets struck by fire or other disasters in Philadelphia and parts of Eastern Pennsylvania and South Jersey.

"We're still in shock. The amount of money is mind-blowing," Jen Leary, Red Paw president and co-founder, said. "We're a small organization with a lot of ground to cover, so this donation is huge."

The Red Paw team was surprised with the large check at the Philadelphia Fire Academy, where Leary works.

The organization, which was officially added to the city's Emergency Response Plan, is run by firefighters and works in conjunction with public and private disaster relief organizations to provide emergency assistance to animals, including search and rescue, emergency transport, veterinary care and temporary shelter.

According to Leary, Red Paw plans to utilize the large sum to purchase a much-needed second emergency response vehicle, along with some search and rescue equipment.

"We're grateful to NRG and everyone who supported us," Leary said.

The two runners-up in this year's NRG Gives, College Possible Philadelphia and Canine Partners for Life received $20,000 and $10,000 donations, respectively.

Sixers Eliminated in Heartbreaking Game 5 Loss to Celtics

The Sixers' season is over.

Their hunt to become the first NBA team to fight back from a 3-0 deficit to win a seven-game series ended in Game 5 with a down-to-the-wire 114-112 loss to the Celtics at TD Garden Wednesday.

In a battle that came down to the final possession, the Sixers fell short in the deciding game that featured 21 lead changes and 11 ties.

The Celtics move on to face the Cavaliers in the Eastern Conference Finals.

• A combination of missed threes, turnovers and failed free throws totaled up in Game 5. The Sixers shot 8 for 21 from long range, 24 for 31 at the line and gave up 16 points off 17 turnovers. Brett Brown considered that “leaving points on the table,” and they have an extra sting given the two-point game differential.

• The Sixers were in this game until the very end. After falling behind by nine at halftime, they fought back in the third. The Sixers outscored the Celtics, 30-22, in the quarter and led, 94-90, with 8:51 to play, but the Celtics went on a 10-0 spurt to claim a six-point edge.

• The final minutes of the game became a race for the Celtics to build upon their lead and the Sixers frantically trying to catch up. And the Sixers did. The Sixers were up four with 1:37 remaining before the Celtics made another push.

• JJ Redick drained a three to make it a one-point game with 3.8 seconds to go. T.J. McConnell fouled Marcus Smart, who had been 7 for 11 at the line. Smart went 1 of 2, leaving the window open for the Sixers to pull off a heroic last shot. That wouldn’t happen. Smart picked off Simmons’ long inbounds pass as the buzzer sounded and the Celtics advanced.

• Redick is a student of game film. This likely will be one he watches back a few times. Redick (14 points) shot 5 for 13 from the field and 2 for 7 from three. That includes his key trey down the stretch, but overall he was off mark in 38 minutes. Redick also ran into foul trouble with five whistles.

• Joel Embiid played in a mask without goggles. He scored 27 points as he went 9 for 18 from the field and 0 for 4 from three. Embiid pulled down 12 rebounds. Embiid will not use his mask for an excuse, and it will be left to wonder how much it impacted him in the playoffs.

• Jayson Tatum continued to look more experienced than a rookie with another 20-plus point game. He led the Celtics with 25.

• Dario Saric came through with 27 points and 10 rebounds. Ben Simmons posted 18 points, eight boards and six assists.

• Brad Stevens responded to the Sixers’ lineup change of inserting T.J. McConnell by moving Jaylen Brown back into the starting five. Smart came off the bench. Brown had been playing with the second unit after suffering a hamstring injury in the first round. The athletic Brown scored 24 points in 31 minutes.

Body Found in Car is Missing NJ Mom: The body discovered in a car registered to a 24-year-old New Jersey woman who vanished last year has been positively identified as the missing mother. The body found in the vehicle's back seat is that of Shanaya Coley, of Paterson, who went missing at the beginning of December in what prosecutors described as a possible abduction. On Sunday morning, police responding to a call reporting an unattended car in the parking lot of an apartment complex on Marion Street in Paterson and discovered a gray Nissan Altima registered to Coley, the Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office said. Officers found a body in the vehicle’s back seat, and on Tuesday officials positively identified the body as Coley's, the prosecutor’s office said. Coley was the victim of a homicide and died from puncture and incision wounds. Prosecutors said she may have been hurt and abducted from her car. The man who found Coley's car on Sunday told NBC New York the car had been in his apartment building parking lot for months. As the weather got warmer, he started to notice a strange smell he hadn't noticed in the winter, he said. Coley, who has a son who was 3 years old in December, was last seen near Colonial Avenue in Paterson shortly before 11 p.m. on Dec. 5. The car discovered on Sunday was parked less than a mile from that location.

          AROUND THE WORLD

Trump Welcomes Americans Freed from N. Korea: Staging a made-for-TV, still-of-the-night arrival ceremony, President Donald Trump welcomed home three Americans freed by North Korea and declared their release a sign of promise toward his goal of denuclearizing the Korean Peninsula. Speaking early Thursday on an air base tarmac with the former detainees by his side, Trump called it a "great honor" to welcome the men to the U.S., but said "the true honor is going to be if we have a victory in getting rid of nuclear weapons.” Trump also thanked North Korea's Kim Jong Un for releasing the Americans and said he believes Kim wants to reach an agreement on denuclearization at their upcoming summit. "I really think he wants to do something," the president said. First lady Melania Trump, Vice President Mike Pence, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and other top officials joined Trump to celebrate the occasion at Joint Base Andrews near Washington. The men — Kim Dong Chul, Kim Hak Song and Tony Kim — had been released Wednesday amid a warming of relations between the longtime adversaries.

149 Sickened in 29 States as E. Coli Outbreak Widens

          0

The E. coli outbreak linked to romaine lettuce grown in Arizona has boomed to 149 cases in 29 states, though the death toll has not risen from the one reported last week, the Centers for Disease Control said Wednesday.

That's an increase of 28 sick people since the last update one week ago. To date, 64 people have been hospitalized -- 17 of them for a type of acute kidney failure called hemolytic uremic syndrome. The lone death was in California.

Health officials have tied the E. coli outbreak to romaine lettuce grown in Yuma, Arizona, which provides most of the romaine sold in the U.S. during the winter. The growing season in Yuma ended about a month ago, said the University of Arizona's Russell Engel, the director of Yuma County's cooperative extension service, but investigators have yet to isolate a possible brand or supplier.

          [[480662441, C]]

The outbreak has now affected people in New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, New York, Florida and nearly half the rest of the U.S. states. The most cases have been reported in California (30), followed by Pennsylvania (20) and Idaho (11). To date, New Jersey has eight cases -- an increase of one from the last CDC update -- New York has four (an increase of two) and Connecticut has two.

Patients across the nation range in age from 1 to 88, with the median being 30. Sixty-five percent are female and 50 percent of the noted cases have involved hospitalizations. Ninety-one person of 112 people interviewed reported eating romaine lettuce in the week before their illnesses started, compared with 46 percent of healthy people.

          [[480667081, C]]

The CDC has warned to avoid eating any lettuce that may have been grown in Arizona and reiterated that warning on Wednesday.

But even if no one is eating tainted lettuce now, case counts may still rise because there's a lag in reporting. The first illnesses occurred in March, and the most recent began on April 25, the CDC said.

Most E. coli bacteria are not harmful, but some produce toxins that can cause severe illness. People who get sick from toxin-producing E. coli come down with symptoms about three to four days after swallowing the germ, with many suffering bloody diarrhea, severe stomach cramps and vomiting.

Most people recover within a week, but some illnesses can last longer and be more severe.

One of Philadelphia’s iconic sporting events, the Jefferson Dad Vail Regatta, takes over the Schuylkill River this weekend. With the return of the largest collegiate regatta in the United States comes a major road closure and detours through Fairmount Park that last until Saturday night.

Starting Thursday at 10 a.m., Kelly Drive will be detoured along a 1.5-mile stretch from Strawberry Mansion Drive to Fountain Green Drive, Philadelphia police alerted motorists.

The Kelly Drive closure will allow crews to get boats and other equipment to the river's edge and continues until Saturday at 8 p.m. During that time only permitted vehicles can enter the regatta zone.

Cars will be detoured off the river drive and onto Reservoir Drive. Detours will be posted.

You can use the Schuylkill Expressway (Interstate 76) as an alternate route. Martin Luther King Drive, on the other side of the river, can be used Thursday and Friday. (It is closed for recreational use during the day Saturday.)

Going to the regatta? You can pay to access parking areas adjacent to Reservoir Drive.

The NBC10 First Alert Weather Team has issued a First Alert for isolated thunderstorms packing the potential for damaging winds, downpours and hail Thursday afternoon.

The First Alert will be in place from 1 to 7 p.m. for most of the region including Philadelphia, Pennsylvania suburbs, Lehigh Valley, central New Jersey and northern Delaware as a string of storms races across the region. A few of the storms could turn severe.

"Out of an abundance of caution we've issued a First Alert," NBC10 First Alert Weather meteorologist Bill Henley said. "We want people to know that there is a potential for damaging winds and hail from these storms."

"If you hear thunder, if you see the lightning, take it seriously," Bill said.

Some neighborhoods might not see storms at all and the rain isn’t expected to be long-lasting. The Phillies could even get in their NBC10 First Alert Weather Education Day afternoon game at the ballpark without storms moving in, Bill said.
