Horse Gives Birth Live on UPenn's 'Foal Cam'

The University of Pennsylvania's School of Veterinary Medicine "Foal Cam" captured the live birth of a horse Saturday.

The pregnant mare, My Special Girl, could be seen moving around a grass-covered pen while veterinarians monitored her labor Saturday.

Vets taped up My Special Girl's tail around 9 p.m. About 10 minutes later, viewers could see the foal's legs begin to emerge.

Four people from Penn Vet assisted in the birth and immediately began monitoring the new horse after the colt arrived at 9:22 p.m.

My Special Girl, who is an 11-year-old Thoroughbred used for teaching veterinary students, licked her offspring clean while the pair recuperated together.

The mare was a surrogate, impregnated through an advanced reproductive technique called intracytoplasmic sperm injection, or ICSI. The procedure involves injecting a single sperm into a mature egg. After fertilization, specialists transferred the embryo to My Special Girl in April 2013

A Thoroughbred-Cleveland Bay cross mare provided the egg and a long-deceased Thoroughbred-Quarter Horse cross stallion provided the sperm, which came from frozen semen.

Her pregnancy represents the first time ICSI has been completed successfully in the Delaware Valley, a procedure the doctors hope the school will replicate.

The camera started rolling on Feb. 26, ahead of My Special Girl's due date of March 14.

The school will be holding a naming contest for the new horse.

A New Jersey mother decided there was no time like the present to get a little extra pampering before delivering her second child last week.

Anna Rubinstein of Emerson made a pit stop at the Eden Nail salon in Glen Rock while in labor last Wednesday.

Every mom-to-be wants to feel good, right?

Rubinstein took that extra time to be sure she did before delivery. Her first child's labor took more than a day, so she figured she had plenty of time.

Rubinstein's labor progressed quickly after she got the manicure. Baby Damien didn't wait for mom to finish the massage, manicure and pedicure. Her husband was summoned to the salon, as was an ambulance. Sergei Rubinstein arrived just in time to deliver his son in the salon's bathroom.

NewJersey.com reported that the bundle of joy arrived before Rubinstein's nails were dry.

The salon's owner Nancy Wang was en route to the salon during the delivery. When she arrived, she saw the Rubinsteins cradling the baby in the bathroom. The paramedics also arrived shortly after the baby was born.

"Everybody was very nervous," said Wang. "I was very happy the baby was born and everyone was doing fine."

Wet weather has jump started this week. Philadelphia set a rainfall record today with the most rain on March 30. The National Weather Service recorded 2.26 inches of rain as of 2 p.m. at the Philadelphia International Airport.

Rain rain go away. Well, not yet. A flood watch is in effect until 2 a.m. Monday morning.

NBC10 meteorologist Brittney Shipp says the area could experience rainfall for the next 12 hours and ponding will be a concern for drivers during the Monday morning commute. There's a slight chance of additional showers Monday morning, but the precipitation should taper off by the afternoon, says Shipp.

But, it's not just rain, water and flooding that's possible.

A winter weather advisory is in effect for the Poconos Sunday evening with a possibility of wet snow, sleet and ice. There's also a chance for sleet to hit the suburbs north and west of Philadelphia, according to Shipp.
