Eagles Parade: What Will the Weather Be Like?

For those heading to Thursday's Eagles Parade of Champions in Philadelphia, dress for the cold!

Temperatures start in the upper 20s Thursday morning around Philadelphia, and only rise into the low 30s by parade start time about 10:45 a.m.

"Make sure you’re bundling up as you head out early to get the best spot for the parade. It will be bitterly cold, with wind chills in the 20s," said NBC10 First Alert Weather meteorologist Krystal Klei. "A few extra layers of green will help out!"

The temperature caps around the end of the parade and celebration at the Art Museum, at 34 degrees, but it will be breezy.

Winds will gust around 30-35 miles per hour, and continue gusting to around 25 mph in the afternoon. This means temperatures will feel considerably colder than they actually are. In the morning, it will feel like the upper teens to low 20s. By the afternoon, the wind chill will only rise to around 25 degrees. There may be some scattered clouds to start the day, but it will be a sunny forecast by parade time!

"While it may look pretty outside, it will be very cold. Make sure you’re wearing extra layers if you plan on staying outside for several hours before and during the parade," Klei said.

If you are traveling into the city from the upper suburbs, Lehigh Valley or Berks County, a few areas of patchy ice may form early Thursday morning due to wet weather that will occur Wednesday. Also, some of the accumulated snow from Wednesday will still be present in the Lehigh/Berks area as well. Ypu'll want to give yourself extra time to travel from these areas.

Make sure you’re bundling up as you head out early to get the best spot for the parade. It will be bitterly cold, with wind chills in the 20s throughout. A few extra layers of green will help out!

2 Inmates Dead in 6 Hours Inside Montgomery County Jail

Two middle-aged inmates at Montgomery County Correctional Facility died six hours apart Friday, county officials said.

Donald Levengood, 54, died at 2:15 p.m. and Michael Lennon, 52, died at 8:16 p.m. Autopsies performed by the county coroner's office concluded that Levengood died of a pulmonary embolism and Lennon died of suicide.

They are the 29th and 30th inmates of the county facility in Eagleville to die since the beginning of 2007. NBC10 reported last year that 25 inmate deaths occurred from 2007 through the end of 2016, when Dr. David Kennedy died in custody Dec. 18 of that year.

The cause of Kennedy's death was never determined.

Following his death, three other inmates died in custody in 2017, a spokesman for the coroner's office said Tuesday.

Daniel Eaton died Sept. 17, Terrence Taylor died Oct. 28, and Jamison Bockman died Dec. 9. Eaton and Bockman died by suicide, Deputy Coroner Alex Balacki said. The cause in both cases was hanging.

Taylor's death remains under investigation, Balacki said. He was 23 and jailed on a probation violation stemming from a marijuana possession conviction, according to online court records.

Levengood, of Tyrone, Blair County, was in jail on a probation violation and awaiting a hearing, according to court records. He was found guilty in 2015 for indecent assault of a minor and corruption of a minor. He was registered as a sex offender. It is unclear how he violated probation.

"Mr. Levengood was in an area near his housing section at 1:23 p.m. when he contacted a correctional officer and stated he was having breathing problems," county spokeswoman Kaitlyn Foti said in an email. "As the CO began to escort him to the medical department, Mr. Levengood grabbed his chest and fainted. An LPN was in the immediate area and began chest compressions."

Foti said an ambulance unit arrived and continued medical care until 2:15 p.m., when Levengood was pronounced dead.

Lennon, whose address was not released, was arrested July 9, 2017 in Lower Moreland and charged with trafficking in minors, promoting prostitution, sexual exploitation of children and other charges.

Court records indicate a county judge was expected to issue an update in his case March 5.

Foti said he died in his cell by hanging. A medical emergency was called at 7:57 p.m. Jail staff initiated life-saving measures until an ambulance unit arrived at 8:07 p.m. and Lennon was pronounced dead nine minutes later.

The jail, which houses suspects awaiting trials and offenders convicted of crimes who generally are serving less than a year, has an average annual population of 11,000 inmates. The wife of one of the inmates to die in custody sued Montgomery County for in excess of $175,000, according to an online news report. David Minnich was awaiting charges of aggravated indecent assault of a child when he died Dec. 20, 2012 by hanging himself in his cell.

Federal court records indicate a settlement was reached, but the amount was sealed.

Where to Watch the Eagles Parade

The big day is almost upon us. With little time to prepare, Philadelphia is transforming into one giant party when the Eagles victory parade comes to town.

People scrambling to plan their day have a big task ahead of them. How will you get to the parade? Where will you park? Where can you stay?

And, most importantly, where can you eat, drink and watch the festivities from inside?

For starters, all of the museums and major institutions along the parade route will be closed. So do not plan on going to the Free Library, Franklin Institute, Academy of Natural Sciences or the Barnes Foundation unless you mean to stand outside. All three will be closed Thursday.

Here are some alternatives that will be serving food and drinks throughout the day:

  • Con Murphy’s Pub
  • TGI Fridays on the Parkway will open early and offer first come, first served seating.
  • Pete’s Famous Pizza
  • Pizzeria Vetri on Callowhill Street will have takeout beer specials. People can also choose to dine in at the regular menu.
  • Rose Tattoo Café on Callowhill Street is taking reservations
  • Starbucks on Callowhill Street
  • Bishop’s Collar will be offering beer outside on the sidewalk, as well inside the tavern.
  • Urban Farmer at the Logan Hotel

While it’s not along the actual parade route, the National Constitution Center will remain open for a watch party on a giant “state-of-the-art video wall.” Entry is $5 and will include admission to the museum. Restrooms and a cafe will also remain open.

Yards Brewery is also hosting a watch party at their new campus on Spring Garden. Fans will get a free Philly Pale Ale in the taproom Thursday.

Is New England Making Good on Their Eagles Super Bowl Bets?

$

With an Eagles' Super Bowl victory in the books, it's time to check back in with some of those infamous sports bets to make sure that New England fans kept good on their promises.

Philly-area Breweries vs. Boston-area Breweries: Two local breweries, Victory Beer and D.G. Yuengling & Son, Inc., made a Super Bowl bet with two breweries in Massachusetts; Samuel Adams and Jack's Abby Craft Lagers. If the Eagles lost, brewers at the Pennsylvania breweries would have to wear #GOAT masks on the post-game brewing day. If the Patriots lost, brewers at the two Massachusetts breweries would have to wear the signature underdog masks. Needless to say, brewers at Samuel Adams and Jack's Abby Craft Lagers rocked the underdog masks on Monday.

Attorney General Face-Off: Pennsylvania Attorney General Josh Shapiro and Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey made a bet that the AG from the losing team would have to don the winning team's jersey at the first press conference following the game. Looks like Maura Healey has her midnight green ready.

Battle of the Zoos: Philadelphia Zoo and Zoo New England engaged in a friendly bet surrounding the Super Bowl. The zoo located in the losing team's area would have to name their next goat after the winning team's quarterback. Look's like Tom Brady isn't the only "GOAT" anymore, because Zoo New England will be naming their newest goat kid "Foles."

Bassetts Ice Cream vs. Maple Valley Ice Cream Company: Philly-based Bassetts Ice Cream and Massachusetts-based Maple Valley Ice Cream Company generated a bet that the losing city's ice cream parlor would have to create a new flavor based on the winning team's city while workers would have to wear shirts from the winning ice cream company. So, Maple Valley Ice Cream Company's latest flavor is "Eagles Oreo Mint," in a lovely shade of green.

Museum Bowl: Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston engaged in a bet that they called #MuseumBowl, in which the loser would have to loan a work of art to the winning museum. Following the Eagles' victory, Museum of Fine Arts is loaning Philadelphia Museum of Art a painting of Mercy Otis Warren, titled "Mrs. James Warren (Mercy Otis)," by John Singleton Copley.

When You Gotta Go: How Many Toilets for Eagles Parade?

$

With fans flocking to the Philadelphia Eagles Parade of Champions and celebration on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway, people want to know where they can “go.”

For the Pope, there were 3,000 portable toilets.

For this past year’s Philadelphia Marathon, there were 1,000 portable toilets.

But the Super Bowl victory parade is only getting 850 private places to relieve yourself.

So, you may want to hold off on drinking your free beer until you leave the Parkway. The 850 portable toilets Thursday will be spread out across the 5-mile parade route, with most concentrated along the Parkway where the parade will end and the victory celebration will be held, the city said.

Let’s say 1 million people attend the parade — that means there will be one portable toilet for every 1,176 people.

The 850 toilets are only about a quarter of the portable toilets that were available during Pope Francis’ visiting during the World Meeting of Families in September 2015. And, most of those toilets were dispatched to the Parkway area and roadways leading up to the Parkway. They also pale in comparison to the 1,000 toilets A Royal Flush supplied for the Philadelphia Marathon.

Those large-scale events are planned for months in advance allowing time to get more portable toilets in place. In this case, the toilets had to quickly be put in place so there may not have been as many on hand.

The city contracts out the Philadelphia office of Connecticut-based A Royal Flush for portable toilets for large events. A Royal Flush is supplying around 700 toilets spread out to 18 locations, including Eakins Oval and Marconi Plaza along South Broad Street for Thursday’s parade, company event specialist Rose Ortiz told NBC10.

The cleaning of the toilets on site is not part of the contract, Ortiz said. Once the event ends, the toilets will be removed Thursday night into Friday, Ortiz said.

It is unclear where the other 150 or so toilets will come from.

If you are riding SEPTA, you will have a chance to use the restroom before you go. Keasbey, New Jersey-based Mr. John is supplying more than 100 portable toilets to SEPTA stations inside the city and in the suburbs. Mr. John is even holding a "Super Bowl Scavenger Hunt" through its Facebook page for fans who find squishable porta-potty toys in some of its units.

The city and event organizers didn’t give us an answer to the cost of the toilets nor did they say if any public buildings along the route will be open for restroom use.

Your best bet may be to find a restaurant or bar where you can use the toilet.

NBC10, NBC10.com and the NBC10 app will have pre-Parade coverage starting at 4 a.m. and broadcast the entire parade starting at 10 a.m. Watch it all LIVE in the video embedded above.

The day that fans have dreamed of for decades is finally here. The Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles are parading through the city of brotherly love during a five-mile-long spectacle that could draw a million people or more.

Universities, schools, government offices, museums, city courts and even the Philadelphia Zoo have shut down Thursday in preparation for the city's first ever Super Bowl parade though Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell will still be open.

The parade begins near Lincoln Financial Field tentatively at 11 a.m. and ends its five-mile journey at the steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art that Rocky Balboa himself climbed. It's a fitting end for a team that championed itself as the underdog that defied the odds, just like the famous, fictional southpaw.

EAGLES PARADE GUIDE

Organizers are preparing for as many as 2 million people to gather around the parade route though the city hasn't made any crowd estimates. In the aftermath of violence and vandalism following the Eagles Super Bowl win Sunday night and early Monday morning, Mayor Jim Kenney called on fans to celebrate with passion and pride while speaking at a Wednesday afternoon press conference.

“Now remember — act responsibly, don’t ruin this for the fans who have waited decades for what will be a historic day as the Eagles finally parade up Broad Street," Kenney said. "We are after all the city of brotherly love and sisterly affection.”

Several businesses are capitalizing on the massive event. Bud Light is offering free beer at two dozen bars along the parade route after making a pact with Eagles offensive tackle Lane Johnson to bring free beer to Philly if the Birds won the Super Bowl. Not to be outdone, Philly-based Yards Brewing Co. will also offer a free Philly Pale Ale to fans who wander off the parade route and over to their new tasting room on Spring Garden Street.

Getting to and from the parade will be tricky. After going on sale at 5 a.m. Wednesday, all 50,000 special one-day SEPTA passes for Thursday were sold out a little more than seven hours later. PATCO's single-day tickets for Thursday also sold out Wednesday.

While the one-day passes are sold out, SEPTA is still doing its part to make things easier for everyone Thursday. Free subway rides will be provided throughout the day and SEPTA is limiting its service to focus on getting passengers to and from the parade. Regional Rail will only run in-bound trains Thursday morning and will stop at a limited number of stations. During the afternoon, Regional Rail will only run out-bound. PATCO is also offering special services for New Jersey passengers.

The NBC10 app will provide updates and alerts during and after the parade that will help you navigate the day. It's free and you can download it here.
