Caught on Cam: School Bus Sideswipes Vehicles in Manayunk

New video shows a school bus sideswiping two vehicles and not stopping on a narrow street in Manayunk Wednesday morning.

A driver, who did not want to be identified, recorded as the school bus traveled on Umbria Street around 6 a.m. and struck a parked Ford Escape. Only seconds later, the school bus sideswiped another parked car and continued on.

Christopher Zaccaria, the fiancé of the owner of the Ford Escape, told NBC10 he didn’t see the bus hit the vehicle but noticed the damage when he left for work in the morning.

“I saw the rear tire first and that was blown out,” Zaccaria said. “First thing I noticed was the car was sitting low. All these scuffs and then obviously the rearview mirror I saw was missing.”

The owner of the other vehicle that was hit told NBC10 the bus knocked off her driver side window and dented the car’s side and bumper.

The driver who recorded the bus left a note and a link to the video to both owners of the damaged vehicles so that they could file a police report. One woman who lives along Umbria Street told NBC10 she’s seen other vehicles damaged in her neighborhood.

“Both roommates had a mirror taken off already,” said Kathryn Volk. “We’ve been here for four months.”

Despite the damage, Zaccaria is thankful someone caught the school bus driver on camera.

“Not all hope is lost for humanity,” he said. “Especially around the holidays. It’s really good to see that someone was willing to probably be late to work that morning.”

        TODAY'S TALKER

Santa with 'Naughty' and 'Nice' Tattoos Must Tone it Down: A beloved Santa with "naughty" tattooed on one arm and "nice" tattooed on the other has been asked to tone down his typically goofy poses at a suburban Philadelphia mall, leaving some fans miffed. Scott Diethorne is known for silly poses like hanging kids upside down and flashing his "naughty" or "nice" forearms. Customers tell Philly.com that when they arrived at the Oxford Valley Mall in Bucks County for their annual photos recently, they learned Santa Scott could only take "traditional" Christmas pictures — no tattoos or upside-down poses. There has been growing support for "Santa Scott" posted to social media. Cherry Hill Programs, which runs the mall's Santa photos, says they're "dedicated to preserving the tradition and image of Santa.” Diethorne declined to comment, but his daughter says he loves his job and he doesn't want this outcry to jeopardize it. His fans are coming for photos anyway.

        AROUND THE WORLD

House OKs GOP Bill Expanding Gun Owners' Rights: Republicans rammed a bill through the House on Wednesday that would make it easier for gun owners to legally carry concealed weapons across state lines, the first significant action on guns in Congress since mass shootings in Nevada and Texas killed more than 80 people. The House approved the bill, 231-198, largely along party lines. Six Democrats voted yes, while 14 Republicans voted no. The measure would allow gun owners with a state-issued concealed-carry permit to carry a handgun in any state that allows concealed weapons. It now goes to the Senate. Republicans said the reciprocity measure, a top priority of the National Rifle Association, would allow gun owners to travel freely between states without worrying about conflicting state laws or civil suits.

A tractor-trailer spilled its load of boxes of vodka onto a busy area interchange Thursday morning.

The crash closed the ramp from Woodhaven Road onto Interstate 95 near the Bucks County, Philadelphia line around 4 a.m.

About three hours later the crash continued to block the roadway as crews worked to unload boxes of Tito's Vodka and upright the tractor-trailer.

The truck driver suffered non-life-threatening injuries, firefighters said.

Expect delays in the area. Drivers should plan to exit Woodhaven Road at Bristol Pike then take that to Academy to continue on southbound I-95.

Obese Squirrel Steals Ghirardelli, Blistex From NJ Family

A New Jersey family was stunned to find the holiday treat tray they put on their front stoop each year ransacked — until they caught an obese, thieving squirrel in the act.

Michele Boudreaux says her family places the tray outside for the mailman and delivery people. It includes a selection of candy, tissues, lip balm, hand warmers and other goodies.

They’ve never had issues in the past, but this year the basket was raided within hours of it being placed outside. And the thief wasn’t just targeting anything, it was targeting the priciest stuff on the spread, most notably more than two-dozen squares of Ghirardelli chocolate.

“This thief took the good stuff. And I wanted to cry,” Boudreaux wrote on Facebook. “Why would they take the most expensive chocolate on the tray? Why not rob us blind of all the Reese's and Mini Snickers since I can't seem to stop eating them?”

Boudreaux and her husband decided to set up a small camera to see who was lifting the treats.

“Not that we'd do anything about it, should we find the thief. We aren't like that. The chocolates are free, after all,” Boudreaux wrote. “It was more about KNOWING who would do such a thing.”

The couple set up the camera Tuesday and then went out for a walk with their dog. As they were returning, something large and furry caught their eyes.

“We spot the FATTEST squirrel,” Boudreaux wrote. “I mean, this squirrel is so obese — a jolly ol’ chap — he must be prepping for a decade of winters.”

Boudreaux said the plump rodent was standing on a step stool “furiously digging through our wooden tray.”

“He’s digging and digging and digging and then he TAKES OFF toward our backyard carrying whatever he possibly can,” she wrote.

Her husband tried to chase the squirrel through the yard to see where it was hoarding all the treats, but the critter made a successful getaway.

On Wednesday morning, Boudreaux was taking her kids to the bus stop when she spotted unopened Ghirardelli squares littering the driveway and yard. She replenished the tray and stood by with a camera as the squirrel, once again, returned to restock its already sizable plunder. This time she videoed it stealing Reese’s and a tube of Carmex lip balm.

And the family has since found a way to outsmart the cunning critter.

“We now have our chocolate in a jar that requires opposable thumbs,” Boudreaux wrote.

Mall Shoplifters Drag Guard in Dramatic Getaway Caught on Video

Police are looking for the suspected mall shoplifters who dragged a New Jersey security guard as he tried to recover merchandise from their SUV last month, authorities said.

Authorities said a guard for the Lord & Taylor in Willowbrook Mall in Wayne Township confronted three women in the mall’s parking lot Thursday afternoon after he got word they may have stolen items.

At some point, the women got in the car and took off with the guard clinging to the door.

Footage from the scene shows the man holding on for dear life as the white SUV swings around a row of parked cars. When the vehicle finishes the turn, the man loses his balance and grip and falls to the ground.

He hits the the concrete back-first; his head also bounces on the ground. Then, he can be seen lying motionless on the ground as the SUV speeds away.

The guard had a concussion and a minor cut, authorities said.

The trio -- who may have only faced shoplifting charges -- could be charged with aggravated assault, according to authorities.

Anyone with information about the women should call the Wayne Police Department at 973-694-0600.

'Secret Sister Gift Exchange' Is an Illegal Scam: BBB

Two holiday schemes have made their way back to social media and people are still falling for them.

The "Secret Sister Gift Exchange" and the "Wine Exchange" programs are getting a lot of traction this time of year. The Better Business Bureau calls them a pyramid scheme.

Here's an example of how it works. One post on Facebook had a user promoting the Secret Sister Gift Exchange by asking ladies to send one gift and promising they will receive 36 gifts in return. All you have to do is message this person for more information.

At first glance the post may look harmless, but a response to the post indicated the consumer reported she hadn't received anything in the mail.

Another user said on Facebook, "Send one gift and get 6+ gifts back." Someone else responded by saying "I did this about two weeks ago, and have not gotten a thing."

The same scheme appears true with the "Wine Exchange" program: Send one bottle of wine and you'll get 6 to 36 bottles in return.

The BBB is urging consumers not to believe the hype.

Gift exchanges are popular this time of year, but according to the U.S. Postal Service, this type of gift chain is illegal. It falls into the "chain letter" category.

"They don't work because the promise that all participants in a chain letter will be winners is mathematically impossible," the postal service said.

So if you're looking for a fun gift exchange activity, this one isn't the way to do it.

The pastor of a church in Burlington County, New Jersey, has been charged with multiple counts of sexual assault for allegedly attacking four minors "over a lengthy period of time," law enforcement officials said Thursday.

The Rev. Harry L. Thomas, of Queens Lane, Medford, is pastor of Come Alive Church, also in Medford. The 74-year-old is being held at a medical facility, the county prosecutor's office said in a statement. The location was not identified, nor was the reason for his stay at the facility.

Thomas is charged with one count of aggravated sexual assault, three counts of sexual assault and four counts of endangering the welfare of children, according to the prosecutor's office.

The alleged assaults occurred in Medford between 1999 and 2015, the prosecutor's office said, which is asking that anyone who may have information relevant to the case call the county Sexual Assault/Child Abuse Unit at (609)265-5879 or the Medford Township police department at (609)654-7511.

An initial appearance date in Superior Court for Thomas has not yet been scheduled.

A South Jersey police was on patrol when a flash of light suddenly streaked across the early morning sky.

Hamilton Township police Sgt. Michael Virga's dashcam captured the fireball streaking across the sky around 3:09 a.m. Saturday, the Mays Landing-based police department said. The light explodes before disappearing, a rare event called a bolide, police said.

The American Meteor Society (AMS) said the light green flash, believed to be a meteor, lasted less than two seconds. Virga’s dashcam captured it from right to left.

2 Chester County Dads Charged in the Deaths of Their Infants

        0

Two different fathers in Chester County have been charged in the deaths of their infants, District Attorney Tom Hogan announced Thursday.

Jamal Bailey, 41, of Downingtown, was charged with homicide for allegedly giving his young child the anti-psychotic medication Seroquel. William Gardner, 27, of Coatesville, is facing homicide charges for inflicting deadly head trauma on his 4-month-old son, according to court documents.

Both men were the primary caretakers for their children when the bodies were found, officials said.

"It is a tragedy when any child dies," Hogan said. "But when children die at the hands of the people who are supposed to care for them and protect them, it is an outrage."

In April, 10-month-old Lynail Bailey was found unresponsive with greenish mucus coming from her nose and mouth. She later died at the hospital. An autopsy revealed that she died from Seroquel intoxication. Her father denied any wrongdoing, but officials concluded someone had been giving the little girl medication for at least 30 days prior to her death, officials said.

She did not have a prescription for the anti-psychotic. The medication is not approved by the FDA for minors.

When authorities found 4-month-old Ayden Gardner lying on a sofa in December 2016, he was blue and cold to the touch, officials said. An autopsy revealed the baby had more than 15 rib fractures, and bruises on his spine and scalp. He had also suffered from acute head trauma, according to his autopsy. Additional injuries suggested the baby had been consistently abused for at least three months.

“Due to their ages, the children could not have verbally reported the abuse to other family members,” Hogan said. “Now the children are dead. They will never be able to tell their stories.”

NJ Orders ‘Sopranos’ Strip Club Owners to Surrender Licenses

        0

Authorities say the family that owns a New Jersey strip club where fictional mobsters hung out in “The Sopranos” has been defying state law for years and must hand over its liquor licenses.

The Satin Dolls in Lodi, which served as the fictional “Bada Bing” club in the popular HBO crime drama, has until Dec. 17 to stop providing entertainment and sell or transfer its liquor license by Jan. 3, Attorney General Christopher Porrino announced Thursday. State authorities have ordered A.J.’s Gentleman’s Club in Secaucus to do the same.

The two strip clubs, owned by various members of the Cardinalle family, have been the target of investigation and legal proceedings by the state Division of Alcoholic Beverage Control for more than six years. Porrino said if they don’t cease operations by Dec. 17, their licenses will be suspended and they could face disciplinary charges.

In a statement, Porrino said the Cardinalles’ “continued flouting of Alcoholic Beverage Control laws cannot and will not be tolerated.”

Earlier this year, the Division of Alcoholic Beverage Control alleged criminal solicitation for prostitution and lewd activity at the clubs; those charges remain pending.

“Illegal activity was glorified at the ‘Bada Bing’ in the fictional world of Tony Soprano, but it has no place in modern-day New Jersey. It’s time to shut it down,” Porrino said.

Authorities allege that Anthony Cardinalle continued to be involved in the clubs operations despite being criminally disqualified from doing so. Cardinalle pled guilty in 1995 to federal income tax evasion. In 2013, he pled guilty to racketeering conspiracy and conspiracy to commit extortion in connection with a waste-disposal scheme by the Genovese crime family.

The Cardinalles were ordered to transfer both of the clubs’ licenses to a bona fide third party by Dec. 13, 2015. Authorities say extensions were granted, but the Cardinalles continued to hold the licenses until the latest deadline, Sept. 28, 2017.

NBC 4 New York has reached out to Satin Dolls for comment.

Miracle Cat Survives Fall, Trash Compactor

A lucky cat at the Jersey Shore may be down to eight lives after surviving a 10-story fall and trash compactor.

Authorities in Atlantic County are ready to take action after a cat was discovered alive in a high-rise apartment building's garbage compactor after being thrown down the trash chute from 10 stories up, and they have video proof.

“It’s one of the lowest lows that can happen to an animal,” said Karen Reinecke, from the Atlantic County SPCA.

Surveillance video from the Baltic Plaza Apartment High-Rise in Atlantic City from Sunday night shows a woman and a man allegedly throwing away multiple bags of trash, one bag which Reinecke said shows the cat’s hind legs sticking out. Video of another trip to the trash chute seems to show the woman throw a litter box away.

The cat is lucky to be alive. Her life apparently spared thanks to the trash compactor malfunctioning. The cat was found shaken, but alive midday Monday. She is now recovering and being cared for in foster care.

“I am disgusted. I’m still disgusted. My heart hurts. My stomach is sick. Thanking God the cat is okay,” said Christine Boyle, the property manager of the Baltic Plaza.

Authorities say they plan to file animal cruelty charges once they track down the people in the video. If convicted, they could face fines and potentially jail time.
