Four members of Philadelphia’s Sheriff’s Department left Sunday morning to embark on a week-long aid mission in Puerto Rico.

They will work with the Red Cross to make sure residents get the supplies they desperately need.

All of the participating officers have family stranded on the island, which continues to struggle in the wake of Hurricane Maria.

More than three weeks after the hurricane hit, only around 14.6 percent of Puerto Rico had electric service restored, according to the government. Generators were being used to power businesses and other structures.

At least 44 deaths in Puerto Rico have been directly and indirectly blamed on the hurricane, which made landfall on Sept. 20.

As of Saturday 64 percent of water service had been restored to the island, which has a population of around 3.5 million, according to officials. The devastation has been called a humanitarian disaster.

A Philadelphia elementary school will remain closed after traces of mold were found in classrooms.

Classes at John B. Kelly Elementary School on 5100 Pulaski Avenue in Germantown will be closed Monday. All staff members should report to the Hill Freedman World Academy on 1100 Mt. Pleasant Street. The Philadelphia School District says they are in "the final stages of cleanup" at the school.

Officials announced last week that traces of mold were found in several classrooms of the school after heating, ventilating and air-conditioning issues. An environmental remediation contractor and other workers began to remove the problem at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday.

The Philadelphia Federation of Teachers claimed in a statement released Thursday however that staff members reported mold issues at the school long before the school district took action.

"Instead of taking proactive–and cost effective–steps to remediate the mold when it was first reported, the District allowed the situation to worsen to the point that the school had to be closed to address the issue," a PFT spokesperson wrote.

Lee Whack, the spokesman for the Philadelphia School District, told NBC10 the district took action immediately however when they learned about the mold.

"Once we were informed of this issue, we took immediate action," said Whack. "Within maybe an hour or so we had folks here."

The closure comes as schools in the Monroe Township School District in Gloucester County remain closed due to mold being found in one of its elementary schools.

A young South Jersey boy dealing with the loss of his father is lending a huge helping hand to victims of the opioid epidemic.

It was a year ago when Trae Cole’s father died after battling a drug addiction Now the 11-year-old boy is turning his tragedy into triumph by making it his mission to help others who are struggling with substance abuse. On Sunday Cole handed out 50 backpacks to residents at the Oxford House-Jarvis, a recovery house in Sicklerville, New Jersey.

“I spent my time after sports collecting money and backpacks,” Cole said.

Each backpack contains a hand-stitched patch with the name of someone who lost their battle with addiction as well as their story.

“For him to do this for somebody after losing his father and not having his mother around and can be selfless like that, it warms my heart,” said Tina Cole, Trae’s grandmother.

The backpacks also contain care packages with toiletries and other items.

“A lot of people that move into our houses don’t have anything,” said George Chewkaaes, who works at the Oxford House. “So it’s a real nice gesture.”

For those struggling with the disease of addiction, Trae’s gifts were much more than just material items however.

“The amount of hope it gives the rest of us guys like me. Because I’ve got kids too,” said Carl Harris, one of the Oxford House residents. “This is the first time I’ve ever experienced anything like this. And it just really choked me up.”

Trae’s effort won’t stop now. He plans on giving out as many backpacks he can to make sure that those who lost their lives in the midst of the nationwide drug epidemic, including his father, will never be forgotten.

“I will keep this for the rest of my life and I will cherish it,” another Oxford resident told the boy. “Your father’s memory will not only be with you but it will be with me as well.”

Thousands Sign Online Petition to Ban Pete Morelli from Reffing Eagles Game: Should veteran NFL referee Pete Morelli be banned from officiating Eagles games? More than 23,000 people say yes. After watching Morelli and his crew penalize the Eagles dramatically more than their opponent for a fourth straight Eagles game the crew has officiated, Will Philbrick of Little Rock, Ark., went to change.org and created a petition to present to NFL commissioner Roger Goodell complaining about Morelli's track record working Eagles games. As of Sunday morning, the petition had 23,074 signatures. The Eagles beat the Panthers and Morelli Thursday night in Charlotte. The Eagles were penalized 10 times for 126 yards, and the Panthers just once for one yard. It was the first time in NFL history one team was assessed 120 or more penalty yards and its opponent was assessed fewer than 10 penalty yards. Morelli also worked the Eagles-Lions game in Detroit last year, when the Eagles were penalized 14 times for 111 yards and the Lions twice for 18 yards. In fact, in the last four Eagles games that Morelli has worked, the Eagles have been flagged 40 times for 396 yards and their opponents just eight times for 74 yards.

Calif. Turns Corner in Battling Wildfires: California fire authorities said Sunday they have turned a corner in battling several of the wildfires that have devastated wine country and other rural parts of Northern California over the past week. Some counties were preparing to let more evacuees return to their homes amid improving weather. The winds that have been fanning the deadliest and most destructive cluster of wildfires in California history did not kick up overnight as much as feared. "Conditions have drastically changed from just 24 hours ago, and that is definitely a very good sign. And it's probably a sign we've turned a corner on these fires," said Daniel Berlant, spokesman for California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection. "We're starting to see fires with containment numbers in the 50 and 60  percent, so we're definitely getting the upper hand on these fires."

Students Plan Walkout Over Teacher's 'Speak American' Video

A controversial video of a New Jersey high school teacher seen telling Spanish-speaking students to "speak American" has sparked national outrage, and hundreds of students planned to walk out of the building in protest Monday.

In the now viral video recorded by a student, the teacher at Cliffside Park High School can be heard saying, "Men and women are fighting, they’re not fighting for your right to speak Spanish. They’re fighting for your right to speak American."

The video, which was posted on Snapchat and other social media networks and has been viewed more than 9,000 times, shows students getting up from their desks and leaving the classroom in apparent disgust.

"You’re being racist, I know how to speak English," said one student. "Goodbye. Goodbye."

The video does not show what happened before the exchange, but other students at the high school told News 4 that the teacher repeatedly told two students to stop whispering to one another in Spanish.

Students said the teacher -- whose name has not been revealed -- had previously confronted students for speaking Spanish during and in between classes.

The school district did not comment on the video, which was first reported by the Daily Voice. But students said the principal addressed the video in an assembly on Friday. Others online, meanwhile, defended the teacher as a good person and good teacher.

A post on Twitter indicated students planned a walkout during fourth period Monday.

"CPHS will be protesting for our rights to speak and represent any of our cultures. bring your country's flag, shirt, jersey or anything to represent where you're from," the post read. It ended with #stopracism.
