UberEATS Partners Exclusively With Pat's King of Steaks

UberEATS announced its new and exclusive partnership with a Philadelphia original: Pat’s King of Steaks.

The company, which brings you the food you order through partnerships around the country and around the world, officially announced their newest partnership Tuesday.

Does exclusive mean the global company won’t partner with other Philadelphia cheesesteak favorites? Actually, it means the opposite. According to Melissa Ferdinand, senior account executive of Brian Communications, Pat’s used to be available on other apps. Now the “King of Steaks” will only be available on UberEATS.

"Uber will be the only delivery platform where you can order Pat's King of Steaks," Ferdinand said.

So will UberEATS partner with Pat’s cheesesteak competitors such as Geno’s, Jim’s and Tony Luke’s? While Uber does have other Philadelphia cheesesteak restaurants available on UberEATs, in regards to Pat's major competitors, Ferdinand said she was unsure if they've made a decision.

When you were young and coming home from summer camp, who would come to pick you up? Larry Kaplan’s daughter Sydney came back from a seven-week summer camp in Massachusetts to an unexpected chauffeur.

Kaplan went above and beyond to welcome home his daughter by dressing up like a dinosaur.

Sydney seemed to know immediately it was her dad. When she got off the bus, Kaplan ended up chasing her around in the parking lot.

Kaplan is a major advocate for helping kids affected by ALS. He raises money for ALS research and used a video he posted on Facebook, titled "How to Ruin Your Daughter's Life in 2:15," to promote donating. The video is a hit.

When captioning the video he put links in hopes that people would donate to either Hope Loves Company or 50in30.

Kaplan told NBC10 he's willing to help embarrass his child for the right donation.

Man Who Urinated on Philly Synagogue Turns Himself In: Cops

A man who was caught on surveillance video urinating on a Northeast Philadelphia synagogue over the weekend is now in custody, according to police.

Police say the suspect, who has not yet been identified, turned himself in to Northeast Detectives Tuesday evening.

The man first approached the front doors of the Congregation Beth Solomon on 198 Tomlinson Road Sunday at 12:30 a.m., according to investigators. Surveillance video shows the man pointing the middle finger towards the synagogue’s surveillance video camera. He then urinates on the walls and sidewalk directly in front of the building’s doors before fleeing in a white four-door sedan.

The Anti-Defamation League released a statement Monday condemning the vandalism.

“We are revolted by this most recent display of anti-Semitism in Northeast Philadelphia,” said Nancy K. Baron-Baer, ADL Regional Director. “We’ve seen vandalism targeting Jewish institutions in the region before, but this latest incident turns the stomach. The amount of hate a person must feel to desecrate a house of worship in this way is incomprehensible and contemptible.”

The incident is the third time in less than a year Congregation Beth Solomon was vandalized. In September of last year, a vandal stole a large menorah outside the synagogue though it was later returned. In January the shopping center housing the synagogue’s ritual bath was spray painted with graffiti.

The ADL stated in their release that there has been a three-year increase in anti-Semitic activity in Pennsylvania and that the 67 incidents they recorded in 2016 were the most in the state in nearly a decade.

Anti-Trump Sign Placed on Rizzo Statue Amid Removal Talks: Days after violence turned fatal over a statue of Robert E. Lee in Virginia and within hours of President Donald Trump asking if statues of George Washington would be next, a Philadelphia council member called for the removal of a statue of former Philadelphia Mayor Frank Rizzo in Center City. “All around the country, we're fighting to remove the monuments to slavery & racism. Philly, we have work to do. Take the Rizzo statue down,” Councilwoman-at-large Helen Gym said in a tweet Monday. Rizzo’s fraught history with the city is nothing new, Gym told NBC10. “In a way, you can date this all the way back to when he was in office,” she said, adding that Rizzo regularly used racial epithets and advocated for publicly strip-searching members of the Black Panther party. A day after Gym's public call for its removal, police responded to a report of a vandalism at the statue. An hour after that report, an unidentified man threw an egg at the statue and placed the sign, "Shame on President Trump" on it.

The 46-year-old tells The Philadelphia Inquirer her co-worker picked up the sandwich at a Langhorne restaurant in November. The two started to eat when she "felt something funny" and thought the bun was burned. Her co-worker says she knew it was a rodent because she saw the whiskers and tail. If you got an offer over the phone for a free cruise over nearly five years starting in July, a settlement in a lawsuit may entitle you to as much as $900.

That suit claimed a marketing group violated the Telephone Consumer Protection Act when the automated calls offering free trips on Carnival, Royal Caribbean or Norwegian Cruise lines were made.

A settlement in the case, Carvat v. Resort Marketing Group, Inc. et al, was announced last week, creating a fund of between $7 and $12.5 million to pay for claims, attorneys' fees and expenses and more. People who received the calls discussed in the settlement can claim up to three per phone number, at $300 in remedy each.

The calls came between July 2009 and March 2014. To see if you are eligible for a payout, click on this link. All claims must be made by November 3.

Couple Pretends to Hire Teen as Sitter, Makes Her Escort: AG

A 19-year-old New Jersey man and his 28-year-old girlfriend have been indicted for allegedly forcing a 17-year-old girl into prostitution at local motels, where she was sometimes made to sleep with up to five men a day, and snort crystal methamphetamine, the state attorney general's office said Tuesday.

A state grand jury indicted Christopher White, of Eastampton, and Adria Regn, of Mount Holly, Monday on charges of conspiracy, human trafficking of a minor, promoting prostitution of a minor and offenses related to child pornography and other crimes.

Prosecutors say the couple has been held in the Burlington County jail since their arrests in May.

The investigation began after the victim reported she was forced by White and Regn to work as a prostitute at various hotels where the defendants lived in Burlington County for a period of 10 days in October 2016.

Regn has two young children, and the victim, who knew White, went to the first motel believing she would be babysitting the children, prosecutors said. Instead, White and Regn allegedly gave her drugs, including crystal methamphetamine and marijuana, and told her that she needed to work as an “escort” for them so that they could make money.

They allegedly said that if she did not work for them, it would be her fault if Regn’s children ended up on the street. White allegedly threatened to beat the victim if she did not take crystal meth, and he also allegedly threatened to find her and beat her if she did not continue to work for them as a prostitute.

White and Regn allegedly placed a number of ads on Backpage.com with photos of the victim in various states of undress, including completely nude, advertising the girl’s services as an escort, according to prosecutors. White and Regn, who would stay in the same room as the victim or an adjoining room, would arrange for clients to meet the victim for sex and then collected all of the money paid by the clients, the indictment alleges. The victim did not receive money.

During a three- or four-day stay at a motel in Wrightstown, White and Regn allegedly made the victim have sex with at least five men each day. The victim ultimately fled while White and Regn were asleep and contacted authorities.

"This is a classic case of human trafficking where these defendants allegedly trapped an underage girl in dehumanizing circumstances in which they gave her drugs and forced her to have sex with multiple men per day,” New Jersey Attorney General Christopher Porrino said in a statement. "It’s terrible for anyone to be exploited in this manner, but it’s especially heartbreaking when the victim is so young and vulnerable."

White and Regn face 20 years to life in state prison without parole, and a fine of $200,000, if convicted of the top trafficking count against them. A message was left with their public defenders' office in New Jersey.

$430 Million at Stake in Wednesday's Powerball Drawing

A roughly $430 million jackpot is up for grabs in Wednesday's Powerball drawing.

It would be the tenth-largest jackpot in the game's history, though it won't even be the largest this summer — California resident Jeff Lindsay won just shy of $450 million in June.

The drawing comes after two weeks of lottery one-upsmanship between Powerball and Mega Millions. Each game grew larger as a succession of drawings came up without winners.

That ended Friday, when a ticket in Illinois matched all Mega Millions numbers, making it worth an estimated $393 million, the fifth largest in the game's history.

It was the first week both Powerball and Mega Millions jackpots topped $300 million.

The odds of winning a jackpot are extremely low — one in 292.2 million for Powerball and one in 258.9 million for Mega Millions.

NJ Couple Steals Enough Merch to Fill Big Rig: Prosecutors

      $

A New Jersey couple has been arrested for allegedly exploiting insecurity in the Lowe's home improvement website to have merchandise -- from a gazebo to a lawn mower to $2,500 in Victoria Secret underwear -- to their Brick Township home without paying.

Romela and Kimy Velazquez allegedly tried to have nearly $260,000 in Lowe's items sent to their home, and managed to receive nearly $13,000 worth of merchandise without paying before the alleged fraud was uncovered.

According to prosecutors, who announced the arrests Tuesday, a Lowe's retail crime manager alerted authorities to the alleged scheme, which 24-year-old Romela Velazquez is accused of orchestrating.

Romela Velazquez took advantage of "weaknesses" in Lowe's website to have the items shipped, then posted photos of the stolen pieces to a local "Buy and Sell" Facebook group, often listing the items as "new" for half price, authorities allege.

When a team of agencies searched the couple's Harding Drive home earlier this month, prosecutors say they recovered enough stolen merchandise to fill an 18-foot trailer. Detectives at the scene said the home looked more like a warehouse than a residence.

According to authorities, bigger ticket items recovered new in boxes, or with their tags still on included:

      • Stainless Steel Weber Grill
      • Aluminum Gazebo
      • Honda Lawn Mower
      • LG Portable Air Conditioner
      • Dewalt Power Washer
      • Multiple Boxes of Ugg shoes
      • 70” Vizio LED Smart TV
      • Sony Stereo Surround Sound System with 4 speakers
      • Nikon D5000 Camera
      • 3 Dyson Ball Vacuum Cleaners
      • Multiple boxes of furniture (not put together)
      • About $2,500 Victoria Secret underwear

Romela Velazquez was taken into custody and released Aug. 4 after her first court appearance on charges of computer criminal activity and theft by deception. Her 40-year-old husband is charged with receipt of stolen property and fencing, which means he is accused of knowingly buying stolen goods in order to resell them for a profit.

Attorney information for the husband and wife wasn't immediately available.

SEPTA is empowering riders to be a tap away from reporting safety and security threats directly to police.

The transit unveiled its SEPTA Transit Watch mobile app at a Wednesday news conference.

The app allows riders to discreetly report safety issues to transit police in 20 seconds or less, SEPTA said. It also feature two-way communication that allows SEPTA dispatchers to ask the reporting commuter for more information or give instructions on how to proceed.

The app automatically turns off your phone's flash so that no one nearby can tell you're taking a photo or video, SEPTA said.

SEPTA also plans to alert app users to "Be on the Look Out" with BOLO messages that will send information on suspects of missing people.

"We expect it will provide invaluable real-time information that will enhance safety and security throughout the transit system," SEPTA Police Chief Thomas Nestel III said.

SEPTA partnered with ELERTS, a company that claims to have “mobile alert systems empower people to quickly report safety and security incidents,” for the app. ELERTS is known for “See Something, Say Something” mobile apps.

The SEPTA Transit Watch app is available now on Apple and Android devices.

"We count on our customers to help be the eyes and ears of the system, and the SEPTA Transit Watch app now gives them a valuable tool to communicate directly with our police officers," SEPTA General Manager Jeffrey Knueppel said. "This effort also enhances our overall 'Make the Safe Choice' system safety campaign by making it easier for riders to share tips that could end up saving a life."

Campbell's CEO Leaves Trump Council, President Dissolves It

      0

A day after pledging she would stay on a business advisory board to President Donald Trump, Campbell's Soup CEO Denise Morrison announced she's defecting from the group.

Shortly after her resignation, the president dissolved the manufacturing council along with another.

Morrison, in a statement released by her Camden, New Jersey-based food company Wednesday afternoon, cited Trump's latest remarks on the Charlottesville attacks as the primary reason for leaving.

"Racism and murder are unequivocally reprehensible and are not morally equivalent to anything else that happened in Charlottesville. I believe the President should have been – and still needs to be – unambiguous on that point," Morrison wrote in that statement.

Morrison was the sixth CEO to leave the president's American Manufacturing Council. 3M CEO Inge Thulin announced his departure shortly before Morrison.

Within minutes of their departures, the president tweeted that he is ending the manufacturing council and the President's Strategic and Policy Forum.

"Rather than putting pressure on the businesspeople of the Manufacturing Council & Strategy & Policy Forum, I am ending both. Thank you all," the tweet read.

On Tuesday, Campbell's said Morrison felt it was important to "have a voice and provide input on matters that will affect" the industry and company.

That statement came a mere five hours before Trump doubled down on his initial comments about this weekend's violent and deadly white supremacist rally in the Virginia college town saying "there is blame on both sides."

"You had a group on one side that was bad and you had a group on the other side that was very violent. And nobody wants to say that," Trump said.

Trump's unplanned comments, made during a news conference about infrastructure at Trump Tower in New York City, immediately enraged politicians from both parties and the public. It also seemed to wipe away the statement he made Monday when he denounced white supremacists, Klu Klux Klan members and neo-Nazis as "criminals and thugs."

The president's new comments were applauded by former KKK leader David Duke with him tweeting: "Thank you President Trump for your honesty & courage to tell the truth."

Kenneth Frazier, a North Philadelphia native who heads up pharmaceutical giant Merck, as well as the leaders of Under Armour, AFL-CIO, and Intel.
