Beloved Senior Class President Killed by Truck After Prom

The 17-year-old senior class president at an elite New Jersey high school was struck and killed by a tractor-trailer after prom Thursday, hours before he was to be honored at a banquet recognizing extraordinary students.

Christopher Gibbs, who was set to graduate from Newark's Barringer Academy of Arts and Humanities later this month, went home to change his clothes after his senior prom wrapped up in West Orange , then made a quick 7-Eleven run around 11:30 p.m., a law enforcement source tells NBC 4 New York.

He was heading back to the Newark apartment he shares with his father, a two-block trip from the convenience store, and a truck hit him as he crossed McCarter Highway near Fourth Avenue, the source said.

The driver stayed at the scene and called for help. But Gibbs died an hour later at the hospital.

In a statement, Newark Public Schools Superintendent Christopher Cerf described Gibbs as a "beloved member of his school community," calling his death a "tragic accident."

Gibbs had been scheduled to attend Cerf's Superintendent's Awards Dinner Banquet Friday night; the ceremony recognizes students in three categories -- equity, effort and excellence. Gibbs was being recognized for effort.

"Our thoughts and sincere sympathies are with his family and friends at this difficult time," Cerf said.

Grief counselors were at the Barringer Academy Friday morning. Cerf said the school district would also work with administrators to support Gibbs' family and the larger community as it struggles to come to grips with the loss of the bright young man. He had been set to attend The College of Westchester in the fall.

A young man who police believe may be homeless is being sought in connection to the stabbing and attempted robbery of Philadelphia Councilman David Oh earlier in the week.

Shawn Yarbary, 24, is a suspect in the attack Wednesday night outside Oh's home in the Kingsessing section of Southwest Philadelphia, police said.

Oh was briefly hospitalized after he suffered a knife wound to his side, but the Republican at-large councilman was back at work less than 48 hours after the injury.

"Police have obtained a warrant for that suspect and he is now considered a fugitive," Lt. John Walker of Southwest Detectives said. Officers raided a house in the neighborhood late Friday, but Yarbary remained on the loose Saturday morning.

Oh expressed frustration about how to address violence in the city Thursday in an interview with NBC10.

"It is a frustration ... how to address the violence, and the causes of the violence," Oh said from his home.

$5K Reward for Suspect in Sucker Punch Outside 7-Eleven

A $5,000 reward is being offered as police continue to search for a man who they say disappeared after he was initially arrested for mocking and sucker punching a person with cerebral palsy outside a West Chester 7-Eleven store last month.

Police say 29-year-old Barry Baker, who previously lived in Coatesville but now lives in Delaware, was with his friends at a 7-Eleven store on 200 South High Street in West Chester back on May 10 around 2:30 a.m. At the same time a 22-year-old man with cerebral palsy drove into the parking lot of the store and parked his vehicle. As he got out and went into the 7-Eleven, Baker began making fun of him and mocking how he walked, investigators said. When the victim got back out of the store, Baker mocked him again and began to imitate how he moved, according to police.

As the victim stood in front of his vehicle, Baker sucker punched him in the face, according to police. He then fled around the corner of the store. Police say the entire ordeal was captured on surveillance video.

“The defendant’s actions in this case are appalling,” West Chester Police Chief Scott Bohn said. “You wonder what would make an individual treat somebody like that.”

The victim called police and Baker was later arrested and charged with simple assault and other related offenses. Officials say he disappeared however after he was freed on $25,000 bail, according to officials.

On May 22, Chester County District Attorney Tom Hogan announced the active bench warrant for Baker for violating parole and failing to appear for a separate domestic relations matter.

"The defendant should turn himself in immediately to address these warrants," Hogan said in a statement, " We will not quit until we find him."

Police are now offering a $5,000 reward to anyone with information leading to Baker's arrest. If you have any information on his whereabouts, please call the U.S. Marshal's tipline at 866-865-8477 or the Chester County Sheriff's Fugitive Unit Tipline at 610-344-4333.

Dad: Teen, Grandma on London Bridge Hour Before Attack

A New Jersey teenager and his grandmother were on the London Bridge one hour before a vehicle veered off the road and struck pedestrians, according to a family member.

John Doerr told NBC10 his 14-year-old son Joshua Doerr and his mother Kathryn Doerr, both of Mays Landing, are currently touring the UK. Doerr says they were both on the London Bridge Saturday about an hour before terrorist attacks occurred on both the bridge and the Borough Market, located one-third of a mile away.

Officials in London say at least six people were killed and 20 injured. Police also killed three suspects in connection to the attack. It’s the third time in under three months England has suffered a terrorist attack.

Doerr said both his son and mother are safe. He and other family members are still badly shaken however.

“Scared for sure,” Doerr said. “Helpless. I mean helpless is the best way to put it. It’s a strange feeling to have your 14-year-old and your mother thousands of miles away when this is going on and there’s really nothing you can do about it. You just hope for the best.”

Doerr said they are both scheduled to return home next Saturday.

Timeline in Bill Cosby's Sexual Assault Case

$
0
0

Comedian Bill Cosby goes on trial Monday on sexual assault charges stemming from a 2004 encounter at his home near Philadelphia. Andrea Constand will be the star witness during the trial. Cosby could get 10 years in prison if convicted.

Key events in the criminal sex assault case:

2002: Cosby meets Andrea Constand at Philadelphia's Temple University, his alma mater, where she manages the women's basketball team and he serves as a celebrity booster and trustee. (The Associated Press does not usually identify people who say they are the victims of sexual assault, but Constand's lawyer has said her name can be used.)

Early 2004: Cosby invites Constand to his home to discuss her career options. According to his deposition, he gave her three blue pills to alleviate stress before lying on the couch with her and engaging in sex acts. Cosby was 66, Constand was 30.

January 2005: Constand, now back home in suburban Toronto, tells her mother something happened with Cosby. They go to police, who suggest they record him on a phone call. On the call, Cosby said he engaged in ``digital penetration'' but refuses to say what pills he gave her. The case is referred to Pennsylvania authorities. Cosby lawyer Walter Phillips calls the allegations ``pointedly bizarre.'' Constand tells The Philadelphia Inquirer, ``I did what I thought was right.''

February 2005: Montgomery County District Attorney Bruce Castor announces that he will not charge Cosby. He considers the case weak, citing the yearlong delay, Constand's continued contact with Cosby and the fact other accusers now coming forward had never filed a police complaint.

March 2005: Constand sues Cosby for sexual battery and defamation.

November 2006: Cosby settles the case after giving four days of deposition testimony about his affairs with young women over 50 years. A confidentiality agreement prevents either side from discussing the case. Cosby resumes his career.

October 2014: Comedian Hannibal Burress calls Cosby a rapist in a standup act caught on video and shared online. More women accuse Cosby of assaulting them.

December 2014: The Associated Press petitions to have documents in Constand's 2005 lawsuit unsealed. Cosby fights the request.

July 2015: U.S. Judge Eduardo Robreno grants the AP's motion, saying ``the stark contrast between Bill Cosby, the public moralist and Bill Cosby, the subject of serious allegations concerning improper (and perhaps criminal) conduct, is a matter as to which the AP _ and by extension the public _ has a significant interest.'' The documents include deposition excerpts in which Cosby acknowledges giving a series of women pills and alcohol before sex.

August 2015: Montgomery County authorities reopen the 2005 criminal case, aware the 12-year statute of limitations for aggravated sexual assault has not yet run.

December 30, 2015: Cosby is arrested, enters a not guilty plea and is released on $1 million bail.

2016: Cosby's lawyers repeatedly seek to have the case dismissed over the 12-year delay and other legal issues. Judge Steven O'Neill denies their motions.

June 5, 2017: Cosby, 79, will go on trial.

A woman who was driving a car that crashed into a popular Dewey Beach restaurant, igniting a fire that burned the eatery down has been ordered to pay $241,000 and serve two years of probation.

Media outlets report that 37-year-old Michelle Small of Wyoming, Delaware, was sentenced Friday. She had pleaded guilty in April to driving under the influence and criminal mischief.

Police say on Aug. 9, Small lost control of her speeding car and plowed into Ed's Chicken and Crabs. Authorities say the crash severed a propane line and sparked a fire.

The restaurant, which had been at the same location for some 40 years, was destroyed. The owner has not rebuilt or reopened at another location.
