Disabled Activists Stage 'Die-In' at Toomey's Philly Office

About 25 disabled people and advocates for independent living didn't get a chance to speak with Sen. Pat Toomey when they showed up Friday at his office in Center City.

It's not the first time members of ADAPT, a national activist group for the disabled, has tried -- and failed -- to get a meeting with Toomey, according to Nancy Salandra, one of the group's leaders.

The group also showed up at his Capitol Hill office last Wednesday, Salandra said. Alas, Toomey wasn't available then either.

A spokeswoman for the senator said Toomey has "personally spoken with members of the group" while his staff has met with ADAPT both times members visited his Washington, D.C. office.

"I can confirm that NationalADAPT showed up at the Senator’s Capitol Hill office twice for unscheduled visits this year and the group twice met with the Senator’s Chief of Staff, Legislative Director, and Communications Director," Kasia Mulligan, the communications director, wrote in an email.

Salandra said the group wants to talk to Toomey about Medicaid as Republicans in the Senate debate making reforms to the Affordable Care Act. Toomey favors reducing federal funding for the Medicaid expansion that occurred under the ACA, as well as implementing an annual cap on the amount that Medicaid can increase year-to-year.

"It’s endlessly frustrating with him," Salandra said. "We’ve been trying to meet with him for two years."

On Friday, that frustration boiled over into action, sort of. The group staged a "die-in" inside the building where Toomey's Philadelphia office is on Chestnut Street.

Advocates fell to the ground and laid there for several minutes.

In the end, faux-dying didn't work either. Toomey did not appear.

Brandon Matt graduated from high school, completed two semesters of college, then enlisted in the army and headed to boot camp. After finishing boot camp, Matt had two weeks at home in South Philadelphia with his family before he was deployed to Afghanistan for nine months.

His family hasn’t seen him since. Until they were completely taken by surprise on Thursday night.

Matt’s grandmother passed away earlier in May, so the Army granted Matt leave for six days to come home and be with his family. Despite the sad reasoning for the leave, the reunion couldn’t have been more exciting, or more of a surprise for Matt’s mother, Aaliyssa Chanthakhounsy who had no idea he was coming home.

“I’m just so blessed and so happy to be able to hold him a little bit longer,” Matt’s dad, Matti Matt, told NBC10.

In a video of the reunion, Chanthakhounsy screams, then jumps up to run and hug her son.

Matt will return to duty in Afghanistan in a little less than a week.

Tackling Taffy: A Visit to Ocean City's Only Shop

Shriver’s Salt Water Taffy and Fudge is a Jersey Shore staple. Holly Kisby, general manager of Shriver’s, says that it is the only place in Ocean City, New Jersey that sells salt water taffy, and "that makes Shriver’s pretty special.”

Shriver’s, founded in 1898, making it the oldest business on the boardwalk in Ocean City, New Jersey, sells salt water taffy as well as macaroons, fudge, gelato, and novelty candies.

“I love working here. I love interacting with people, watching them watch the taffy and fudge being made,” Kisby, a 24-year employee, says.

Kisby is talking about one of the novelties of Shriver's: You can see the fudge and taffy being made in the store. During peak seasons, Shriver’s carries more than 50 flavors and often gives out free samples. Kisby says they are always up for ideas from customers.

“You see the same customers, people who make Shriver’s a tradition. I've literally watched some families grow from one child to four and from toddlers to adults,” Kisby says. She remembers herself coming into Shriver's as a child when her dad worked in the store. There’s a lot of “remember when” from customers.

Kisby stated that while there are other candy shops, Shriver’s does not need to compete because of its history, strong following and its unique factor of selling salt water taffies.

“We have perfected the ingredients,” she said of their taffies at the year-round business. “You need it to be a little bit sticky and a little bit firm... but not too firm. And, you want the flavor to be strong throughout not just at the first bite. My favorite is the white cranberry. ... (And) the fruit citrus taste is a great flavor.”

In addition to some taffy, NBC10 will be sampling all things 'Down the Shore' throughout this upcoming week. Tune in each morning to see the different Shore attractions we'll be highlighting.

A terminal in Newark airport was evacuated for about an hour Saturday after authorities found a pressure cooker, Port Authority police said.

Police said that no threat was found after the package was discovered at about 6 p.m. Port Authority tweeted that travelers should expect residual delays from the evacuation.

"Thankfully, there was no explosive device," New Jersey police said in a statement. "This is a perfect example of the "SEE SOMETHING/SAY SOMETHING" credo that we try to make everyone aware of."

The suspicious package was discovered at level 3 of Terminal A at Newark Liberty International Airport according to police.

The Port Authority Police tweeted: "#PAPD evacuating Terminal A, Newark Airport after a pressure cooker was found in the terminal. Awaiting bomb squad."

Law enforcement sources told NBC 4 New York that it was found in an area before passengers are screened. Someone reported a brown shopping bag had been left next to a large garbage can, the sources said.

A Port Authority police officer looked into the bag and saw that it "looked like a pressure cooker," the source said.

One traveler said no one panicked during the evacuation.

"No one seemed freaked out, everyone seemed calm," Ryan Lozano, from Astoria, told NBC New York. "It wasn't like they were telling us to run."

K9 units, emergency service units, detectives and the Elizabeth Fire Department were at the scene, police said. The Essex County bomb squad also responded.

The terminal was evacuated at about 5 p.m. on the first day of the Memorial Day holiday weekend.

2 Sharks Surface Near Jersey Shore and Delaware

Two great white sharks are hanging out at the Jersey Shore and Delaware beaches this Memorial Day weekend.

Mary Lee, a 16-foot, 3,456-pound great white shark surfaced in the water near Cape May, New Jersey and Rehoboth Beach, Delaware Saturday and remained in the area Sunday, according to the non-profit shark-tracking group OCEARCH.

The mature predator was about 15 miles east-southeast of Cape May when she last pinged on OCEARCH's radar at 7 a.m. Sunday. Two hours earlier, she pinged near the shore of Lewes and Rehoboth Beach, Delaware.

Researchers have been monitoring the shark’s movements after tagging her off Cape Cod back on September 17, 2012. Since then she’s made several trips to New Jersey.

Mary Lee isn't the only shark in our region. Cisco -- weighing around 362 pounds and measuring 8-feet, 7-inches pinged around 4 a.m. Friday at the mouth of the Delaware Bay, slightly closer to Lewes, Delaware than Cape May. As of Saturday, the shark was in an area between Rehoboth Beach and Cape May.

In the past month the immature shark — one of the few male white sharks tagged by the research group — has made its way up from off the coast of the Outer Banks in North Carolina to the Delaware Bay. He was originally tagged off the coast of Nantucket, Massachusetts in October and named for a nearby beach and brewery, OCEARCH said.

OCEARCH expedition leader Chris Fischer said Cisco is important to the group's mission of gaining data about the white shark population in hopes of protecting fish in the ocean.

"Cisco is a really interesting shark," Fischer said via phone from his home in Park City, Utah. "He's likely just coming in (the Delaware Bay) to forage."

Factors such as fish and water temperature (they like it around 60 to 65 degrees) can draw sharks to the Atlantic Coast this time of year, he said.

"The life of the male white shark was a complete mystery and we really started cracking the code on that just last year," Fischer said, adding that the information gathered on Cisco and two other male sharks have been critical to this new understanding.

He also said people shouldn’t fear a shark being in local waters — rather they should celebrate it because of what a shark means to the ocean ecosystem.

"People should be terrified of an ocean that's not full of sharks, they keep everything in balance," Fischer said. "So, if we want to make sure that our great grandchildren can eat fish sandwiches, we need lots of big sharks."

Teen Saves Baby Nephew from House Fire in Overbrook

A teen boy is being hailed a hero after he saved his baby nephew from a fire in the Overbrook section of Philadelphia Saturday morning.

A fire from a toaster started inside a row home on the 1000 block of Flanders Road around 10:30 a.m. Eight family members, including 17-year-old Rudy Edwards, were inside at the time.

“I couldn’t see nothing,” Edwards’ uncle William Noel, said. “I was coughing and choking off that black smoke.”

As the family escaped, they realized their 1-year-old baby boy was still inside as flames billowed out of the window. That’s when Edwards jumped into action.

“I came out through the front door,” Edwards told NBC10. “My grandpa was like, ‘Hey Bryce is still in the house! Bryce is still in the house!’ Without no hesitation or thinking I just went inside the house to go get him.”

The 10th grade student at Overbrook High School said he couldn’t see anything as he searched frantically for his nephew. Suddenly he heard a sound.

“He coughed so that’s when I heard him on the couch,” Edwards said. “I couldn’t see. So I’m tapping around and I felt him.”

Edwards grabbed his nephew and ran out of the house.

“It all happened in like, maybe 20 seconds, but it felt like a lifetime,” Rudy’s mother, Rachel Noel, told NBC10.

Firefighters were able to bring the flames under control at 10:54 a.m. One firefighter suffered minor injuries.

Overcome by smoke inhalation, Edwards passed out and was taken to the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. His mother and uncle were also treated for minor injuries as well. As Edwards recovers, he’s grateful his baby nephew is alive and well.

“If I got to go through another fire to get another baby I’ll do it,” the teen said. “I’ll do it again.”

The house was completely destroyed in the fire. CLICK HERE if you would like to donate to the family.

Three people are dead after a fire ripped through a home early Sunday in North Philadelphia, police said.

The identities of the victims were not immediately known at the scene of the blaze at North Sixth Street and Montgomery Avenue. Two children and an adult died, the city fire commissioner said. One child died at a nearby hospital and two others, who initially remained unaccounted for inside the home, were found shortly before 8 a.m.

Two other people in the house reportedly jumped from the back window of the house, a three-story, double-wide house.

It is the second Sunday in a row that three people died in a house fire in Philadelphia.

The victims were reportedly trapped on the upper floors of a home as firefighters arrived. They found flames and heavy smoke pouring from the first floor shortly before 5 a.m.

"We're still dousing hot spots," Fire Commissioner Adam Thiel said, adding that firefighters were about to embark on a second sweep of the house to try to find the other victims. "We're still engaged in an active overhaul effort."

He said firefighters were still searching a "very dangerous, unstable" structure.
