Authorities are trying to figure out what caused more than a half-dozen water mains to break in one New Jersey city overnight.

Officials in Elizabeth say seven mains broke in various spots throughout the city. Utility company American Water was working Wednesday to repair the broken mains, most of which are 6-inch pipes, officials said.

A City Hall spokeswoman said no customers were without water by noon, but some may experience low pressure.

The broken mains are on Rahway, Amboy and Elizabeth avenues, Florida Street, Broadway, Inslee Place and Neck Lane, officials said. It wasn't immediately clear if there was any significant flooding.

The evolving world of gender and sports is explored in the upcoming documentary 'TOMBOY', which features voices of many of the world’s most prominent female athletes, broadcasters and sports executives.

The one-hour documentary includes interviews with four-time World Cup champion Lindsey Vonn, Little League World Series pitching sensation Mo’ne Davis, and Basketball Hall of Famer Ann Meyers-Drysdale, among many others, and details their stories and perspectives.

Caroline Paul, author of "The Gutsy Girl," believes the very label of "tomboy" can prove harmful during a young girl's formative years.

"I don't understand why these great values like bravery and resilience and confidence and leadership are considered male," she says. "We need to decouple it from gender because those attributes are so important for the life of both a girl and a boy so saying 'tomboy' and immediately referring she's not totally a girl..it's not only not helpful...it's kind of insulting."

Miesha Tate, a retired mixed martial artist who competed in the Ultimate Fighting Championship says she often feels pulled between two worlds as a mixed martial arts fighter.

"I think there's absolutely nothing wrong with embracing beauty and strength," Tate says. "I don't think that women should have to choose. I'm happy to be a strong and empowered woman and I happen to love fighting...when i step outside of the Octagon then its makeup and hair and heels and I enjoy both worlds."

Ted Griggs, an executive with NBC Sports Regional Networks, said in a release the documentary aims to "elevate, invigorate and inspire the conversation about gender in sports, and we’re proud to create a platform for open, candid discussion featuring a variety of perspectives.”

The documentary will premiere during Women’s History Month in March across  all NBC Sports Regional Networks, nationally distributed NBCSN, and select NBC Owned Television Stations.

A group of junior ROTC members at a Jersey Shore high school are trying to raise enough money to compete in a national competition but they need your help.

The Atlantic City High School Navy JROTC unit and over two dozen others were selected out of more than 600 nationwide to compete in the 2017 NJROTC Nationals Academic, Athletic & Drill Championship in Pensacola, Florida next month. Yet in order to make the weekend trip, the 43 cadets of the AC High team need to raise thousands of dollars to cover expenses.

As of Wednesday evening, the JROTC unit's GoFundMe page had raised around $9,725 but still have a long way to go before reaching their goal.

The cadets are also holding several fundraising events and have launched a letter writing campaign, sending requests for donations to more than 1,000 organizations within a 50-mile radius.

"Any amount helps," said John Russell, a member of the unit. "Even though if you feel like oh, five dollars, that's not really a whole lot, it all adds up."

A police officer is recovering after investigators say he shot and killed a dog that attacked him while he accompanied DHS workers at a Southwest Philadelphia home.

Police say the officer and the DHS workers arrived at a home on 65th Street and Buist Avenue around 7 p.m. Wednesday to take an 8-year-old and 9-year-old child into custody. After knocking on the door they heard a dog barking in the basement. The group asked a woman inside to secure the dog, a large German Shepherd, but it jumped out of the home and bit the police officer in the calf, investigators said. The officer then shot and killed the dog.

The officer was taken to Presbyterian Hospital where he is in stable condition.

Investigators have not yet revealed whether the guardian of the two children or owner of the dog will face any charges.

Warmth, Then Snow, Then Bitter Cold Over the Next Few Days

FROM 60s TO SNOW OVERNIGHT
As I’ve shown in the past couple of days, snow in March in Philadelphia is pretty common. And we can see dramatic weather changes this time of year. So, when we predict temperatures near 60 Thursday afternoon AND snow by the A.M. rush Friday, it’s not really a surprise. At least it shouldn’t be a surprise, or looked at with skepticism. But it sure looks like it’s going to happen.

Here are a couple of computer models for 7am Friday. First, the main U.S. model, the GFS:

The blue is snow and green is rain. The GFS shows snow over all of our Pennsylvania counties, including Philadelphia, and rain in Delaware and South Jersey. Remember, roads will still be warm from the 60 degree weather, so snow is likely to melt on roads, unless it manages to get heavy for a while.

Another U.S. model, a “high-resolution” model-the NAM, shows a similar solution, except for some darker blue colors in PA. That would imply heavier snow than the GFS.

We can’t show the world’s best European model on the same type of map, but it’s very close to the GFS solution-with one exception. It shows an area with rain and snow mixed, right over the Philadelphia area. Since most of the precipitation is coming during daylight hours, it could fall as rain when it’s light, and snow if it gets heavier. Either way, the roads will still be warm from our 60 degree weather, and snow would likely melt on the roads.

The model that shows the lowest chance of snow is the Canadian. That is interesting, since it was the only model that two days ago showed that a potential Sunday storm would be weak and track well south of our area. And it was the only one that was right. We’ll see if that happens again.

WHAT TO EXPECT FRIDAY
As colder air moves down from the north, the precipitation could start as rain in the Philadelphia area and change to snow or a rain/snow mix during the A.M. rush. Roads would be wet, but snow could reduce visibility, making travel more difficult. Farther north (say, north of the PA turnpike), it should be mostly snow, with some accumulation on grassy surfaces-and cars. But it’s hard to imagine snow-covered roads with this minor disturbance.

Temperatures should hold in the 30s during the day, as long as the precipitation continues. We could get into the low 40s if we dry out and get some peeks of sun late in the day.

ANOTHER WEEKEND OF WINTER CHILLS
Remember last weekend? Well, this one is going to be just about as cold. And it’s likely to be so windy Saturday and Saturday night that it should feel every bit as cold as last weekend. At least it will be dry.

Temperatures will be in the teens to start the day Saturday, and only rise to the mid-30s during the afternoon. Then we drop back into the teens Saturday night. Wind chills could drop to single digits in some areas. Then Sunday should only get into the upper 30s. Remember, the average high this time of year is 50 degrees.

THE MONDAY NIGHT/TUESDAY SNOW THREAT

Things may get more interesting early next week, as a stronger storm develops off the mid-Atlantic coast. This time, the roads will be cold ahead of the storm, so snow and/or sleet could stick to untreated surfaces. So this one has more potential for travel problems than the Friday system.

The GFS forecast map for Tuesday is pretty impressive. The LOW pressure center is just off the Delmarva. The yellow and red areas show heavy rain and/or thunderstorms. And the darker blue areas show heavier snow:

The high-resolution models don’t go out that far, so we have to look at other models. Here is the Canadian model, valid at the same time:

This is a much weaker solution, although there is some sort of coastal storm, with air cold enough over our area for snow. That’s still quite a difference from the GFS. But, interestingly, yesterday’s Canadian model looked a lot like today’s GFS-even stronger, in fact.

We’re talking about an “off-season” storm nearly a week away, so there could be several “twists and turns” in the days to come. Stay tuned.

2 Years Worth of Lane Closures on Route 202 in Chesco

Motorists along a busy stretch of Chester County roadway will be dealing with construction detours for the next two years that include driving on the bridge in the opposite direction.

PennDOT announced Tuesday its plan to complete the final phase of the U.S. Route 202 improvement project by speeding $26.4 million to rehab a pair of bridges over Amtrak lines near the Route 30 Interchange in East Whiteland and West Whiteland townships.

During the project -- expected to last about two years -- PennDOT plans to keep two lanes of traffic open in each direction as crews repair the twin structures. To maintain traffic flow, PennDOT will shift lanes as part of a five-stage process.

"A temporary traffic pattern will be implemented to carry one lane on the bridge under construction and a second lane on the adjacent bridge, where concrete barriers will separate the lane from the two travel lanes heading in the opposite direction," PennDOT said in a news release.

Crews will begin this week by establishing a work zone from just south of Route 401 to just north of Boot Road, PennDOT said. The rebuild -- starting with the northbound span -- is set to begin on Monday, March 20.

"Crews will repair the six-span twin structures by upgrading the support piers; replacing the bridge decks and walls; constructing a retaining wall to stabilize the embankment, rehabilitating existing concrete pavement north of the bridges; and installing new Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) equipment," PennDOT said.
