NY, NJ Are 'Most Moved From' States in America

People want out of the Empire State. And the Garden State. And the Constitution State.

You get it.

According to the National Movers Study by United Van Lines, New York and New Jersey rank first on the list of Most Moved from States in 2016, with 63 percent of moves being outbound.

Most of those who left - 46 percent and 40 percent, respectively, in each state – reported leaving for job reasons.

Connecticut ranked fourth on the list, with 60 percent of moves being outbound. More than 45 percent of those moves were also job-motivated.

In general, the Northeast continues to see more people leaving than coming, whereas the Mountain and Pacific West see more moves inbound than outbound, the study found.

The most popular moving destination in 2016 was South Dakota, followed by Vermont and Oregon.

United has studied migration patterns on an annual state-by-state basis since 1977. The 2016 study is based on household moves handled by the company. For more details on the study and methodology, click here.

Dozens Hurt After Two Trolleys Crash in West Philly

Two trolleys crashed on Lancaster Avenue in West Philadelphia, leaving 46 people with minor injuries, officials on the scene said.

"It's like a bomb set off," one passenger told NBC10. "It just like really hit us so hard that it just like knocked everybody on the floor and everything."

Both Route 10 trolleys were heading west in the Powelton Village section about 1 p.m. Wednesday near 38th Street when one of the trolleys rear-ended another.

"All of a sudden the trolley just rammed in from the back man," said Jarrod McCain, one of the passengers. "It must've been going 40 miles an hour man. It shook everybody up. Terrible way to start the New Year."

SEPTA said none of the injuries were life-threatening. A fire department battalion chief on the scene said four of the 46 passengers and operators who were injured were taken to a nearby hospital.

"Luckily I wasn't hurt too badly," said Kathleen Kelley, another passenger. "I just want to get my knee checked out. But there was a girl in the front that was sitting right behind the driver. Her face hit the thing in front of her."

It remains unclear why the trolleys were running so close to each other. The vehicles usually run on a schedule about 10 minutes apart, according to a SEPTA spokeswoman.

SEPTA's Route 10 was diverted around the accident scene but remains in service.

Macy's to Close 65 Stores in 2017, Cut 10K Jobs

Macy's announced it is shutting down 65 stores in 2017 and eliminating an estimated 10,000 jobs as it battles slowing sales and growing online competition.

The closures are part of a planned shut down of about 100 stores that the company previously announced in August 2016. On Wednesday, Macy’s said it will close 63 locations in early spring 2017 and another two mid-year. Macy’s already shuttered three of its 730 stores in 2016.

The company says about 3,9000 employees will be affected by the closures. It also will eliminate about 6,200 other positions as part of an effort to streamline operations and reduce expenses so it can invest more in its digital operations.

“As we’ve noted, it is essential that we maintain a healthy portfolio of the right stores in the right places. Our plan to close approximately 100 stores over the next few years is an important part of our strategy to help us right-size our physical footprint as we expand our digital reach,” the company said in statement.

Macy’s shares fell more more than 9 percent Wednesday after it posted disappointing holiday sales and announced which stores will be closing, CNBC reported.

Final clearance sales at Macy’s stores closing in early 2017 will begin on Monday, January 9, and run for approximately eight to 12 weeks.

Bitter Cold Temperatures and Snow to Hit Region

$

From an above average high temperature day to a dose of Winter reality on the way, we’re tracking a major change in our weather in a very short period of time!

As the polar jet continues its southward swing and gears up to blast us with the coldest temperatures of the season, the First Alert Weather Team is tracking two separate systems that could bring snow to some neighborhoods Thursday into Friday as well as Saturday.

Below is an image of the deepening trough that allows a punch of cold air to make it into our region.

Models agree on the amplification of a trough that gives way to an arctic blast prepping surface conditions that are conducive to snow; however, whether or not the moisture is in place remains to be seen. Here’s why. While a piece of energy moving from west to east is due to bring wintry weather across parts of the country, one of the key ingredients as to how impactful the system will be as it tracks across The Ohio Valley will be influenced by a coastal low.

A low forming off the east coast could help to enhance the piece of energy moving eastward. While the coastal low does not look to be tracking close enough for a direct impact as it heads out to sea, once it gets going the development of the low will merge with that piece of energy moving eastward and will bring some snow to our area.

Beyond this, a second low develops in The Gulf and beelines it north. Models right now including the NAM 12km 18Z run as well as the medium range ECMWF (HRES) keep the low just to our south, but we’re still following updated models for your most accurate neighborhood forecast.

Man Gropes Sleeping College Students in Dorms: Police

A Bucks County man was arrested after he allegedly groped several college students as they slept in their dorm rooms.

Jon Cannon, 25, of Levittown, was arrested on December 31 and charged with criminal sexual contact, burglary and trespassing.

Police say Cannon entered a dorm room at The College of New Jersey back on October 19, 2016 and fondled a student as she slept. He also allegedly broke into the dorms of sleeping women at TCNJ back on September 10 and October 21 of 2016 but didn’t touch them during those incidents, according to investigators.

Prior to his arrest, Cannon was enrolled in a Pre-Trial Intervention Program, a program for first time offenders, in connection to similar incidents at Rider University. Police say Cannon groped sleeping students on two different occasions on Rider’s campus back in September of 2015. He also entered a Rider sorority during a third incident but fled after he was spotted, according to police.

Cannon entered Mercer County Superior Court’s PTI program in connection to the Rider University incidents. While in the program, Cannon submitted a DNA sample which led to a match to another incident at the University of Wyoming back on May 6, 2016, investigators said. During that incident, Cannon allegedly entered a sorority house and masturbated in a student’s room while she slept.

Cannon is currently in prison on $100,000 bail.

SEPTA Bus Driver Convicted in Deadly Crash

A SEPTA bus driver was convicted of homicide by vehicle after she struck and killed a man who was crossing the street in Glenside last April.

A Montgomery County judge determined Katrina Sanders, 48, was "grossly negligent" in the April 2, 2016 crash that killed Edward Miller, Sr., 93, of Glenside.

Miller was crossing the street at the crosswalk on Limekiln Pike and Glenside Avenue around 1 p.m. when he was struck by a SEPTA bus driven by Sanders. Miller was pinned underneath the bus and pronounced dead at the scene. Sanders immediately stopped and cooperated with police during the investigation.

Surveillance video revealed Sanders was staring at papers moments before hitting Miller.

Sanders stopped at a red light at the intersection of Limekiln Pike and Glenside Avenue and looked through papers that were in her hand. At the same time, Miller was on the sidewalk waiting to cross. After the light turned green for both of them, Sanders placed one hand on the steering wheel to turn while holding the papers with the other. Miller, meanwhile, walked across the intersection. Officials say Miller waved his arms in the air as the bus approached him and then tried to get out of the way but was then struck by the vehicle.

Investigators determined Sanders was “reckless,” “careless,” and “negligent” and that she was also responsible for Miller’s death because she was reading the papers while at the intersection instead of paying attention to the road. Prosecutors also said Sanders ignored SEPTA’s safety rules warning drivers to “use extreme caution before executing a left-hand turn,” due to the left side mirror blocking their view of pedestrians.

FOP Blasts DA for Not Charging Teen Girl in Viral Video

The Philadelphia Fraternal Order of Police blasted District Attorney Seth Williams for not charging a teenage girl who was involved in a caught on cam fight with a police officer in Southwest Philadelphia Monday.

Videos were shared on social media showing the unidentified officer repeatedly punching the 16-year-old girl near 54th Street and Springfield Avenue.

The female officer, who was placed on administrative duty, admitted to punching the girl after the teenager allegedly slapped the officer in the face, police said Tuesday.

The teenager allegedly admitted to slapping the officer during interviews with detectives after the fight. She was released in the hours after the fight and police recommended to the District Attorney that the girl be charged with assault of an officer and disorderly conduct, a police spokesman said. A spokesman for the District Attorney's office told NBC10 Wednesday however that they would not file charges against the girl.

"After reviewing the evidence, we have declined charges against the juvenile," the spokesman said.

The decision was criticized by Fraternal Order of Police President John McNesby who released a statement that was later posted on Twitter.

[[409736685, C]]

As many as 30 people were involved in the street fight around 3:30 p.m. Monday, police said. Family members of some of the brawlers called police from a nearby house, according to one witness, Takeema Bundy. Two videos posted to social media showed the fighting.

A video posted on Instagram first pans across the street, capturing the scope of a mass melee. Within a few moments, the video focuses in on a female police officer who is pushing a teen girl away from the center of the fracas.

The teenager yells at the officer and the two begin to push each other. For about a second, the video moves away, but when it returns to the officer and teenager, the officer is seen throwing the teen girl to the ground. The officer then straddles the teen and repeatedly punches the teen as the teen swings back. The officer then pulls the teen girl up by her hair as other brawlers swarm around the two and another officer comes into the frame. The video then ends.

“They threw me against the car and they slammed her on the ground,” the teen’s legal guardian, who did not want to be identified, told NBC10.

[[238427591, C]]

Another video posted on Facebook also shows the incident between the officer and the teen, though it does not show the large brawl that occurred right before. Toward the end of the Facebook video, a second assisting officer can be seen separating some of the brawlers from surrounding the initial female officer and teenager.

Bundy, who is also a friend of the teen, claimed the girl was actually trying to break up the brawl but threw a punch at someone before she was confronted by the police officer. She also told NBC10 the teen's mother died two weeks ago.

“I just feel like she didn’t deserve it,” Bundy said while in tears. “She lost her mom. She don’t got nobody and I feel she was there for me and look where she’s at.”

The Internal Affairs Bureau continues to investigate the incident.
