Amtrak service is up again between Washington, D.C. and Philadelphia after being suspended for more than two hours today thanks to "extensive" damage to overhead wires.

Just before noon, Amtrak tweeted that service on the Northeast Regional Corridor Line was shut down between Baltimore, Md. and Wilmington, Del. due to overhead wire damage.

A short time later the closure expanded to include all service north and south between Philadelphia and Washington, D.C.

Amtrak described the damage as "extensive" but didn't reveal how the electrical system problem occurred.

Crews began to repair the damaged lines around 12:30 p.m.

Passengers who paid for a ticket but got caught in the delay can receive a refund or a voucher from future travel from Amtrak, according to Amtrak.

In a statement, Amtrak said it “regrets any inconvenience.”
