A teen who lost control of her SUV during the evening rush may be paralyzed, according to sources.

The 17-year-old girl was rescued from her overturned 2002 Yukon when it came to a stop on the banks of the Schuylkill River after tumbling down an embankment on Martin Luther King Drive in Fairmount Park just after 5 p.m. Friday.

SkyForce10 was on the scene as rescue crews cut off the SUV’s roof and extracted the victim.

Police say the teen lost control of her vehicle causing it to veer off the road, down the embankment – stopping short of the river.

Passersby who saw the crash, rushed to help the trapped teen.

“I just went down there,” said Nurse Brandee Neiderhofer. “There was another doctor that was running too, so we both went down there to help her.”

Once free, the unidentified teen was transported to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania where police tell NBC10 she is now surrounded by loved ones.

Sources say that the girl will likely be paralyzed from the waist down.

No word on what caused the teen to lose control of her vehicle. An investigation is underway.

MLK Drive has been closed since the accident.
