Police arrested a man who allegedly stabbed a retired police officer outside his home earlier this week.
Joseph Fitzgerald, 31, was arrested on the 3300 block of Aramingo Avenue Tuesday.
Medics rushed the retired Philadelphia Police officer, who wasn't identified, to Temple University Hospital around 2:30 a.m. Monday after he was found stabbed in the chest behind his home on the 3000 block of Salmon Street in the city’s Port Richmond section.
Police say Fitzgerald left the scene before police officers arrived. A Philadelphia Municipal Court judge arraigned Fitzgerald early Wednesday on aggravated assault, simple assault, reckless endangerment and weapons charges, according to court records.
The officer, who is in his 50s, is expected to recover, according to investigators.
The officer’s roommate told NBC10’s Katy Zachry that he was upstairs at the time of the attack and didn’t hear any type of struggle or altercation.
There is no word yet on how police determined that Fitzgerald was a suspect in the violent attack.
