A 14-year-old boy has been arrested for allegedly dealing heroin in a Delaware neighborhood.

The boy, whose name has not been released because he is a minor, was stopped by New Castle County Police at 8:30 p.m. Thursday along Colonial Circle in Newark, Del., officials said.

Officers working in the neighborhood watched the teen carry out what appeared to be hand-exchange transactions, police said. When police walked towards him, officials say he threw away a plastic bag holding 25 bags of heroin. The drugs amounted to .375 grams of the illicit drug, police said.

The teen was arrested and charged with drug distribution. He is being held in the New Castle County Detention Center on $10,000 cash bail.

New Castle County Police Sgt. Jacob Andrews said this is not the first time officers have come across young people involved in drug sales.

He stopped short of calling it a trend, but says the department is seeing an increase in kids selling illegal substances. Still, Andrews says the majority of the dealers arrested are adults.
