Heavy downpours and thunderstorms are moving through the region as a system continues east from the Great Lakes.

The entire area is under a severe thunderstorm watch until 9 p.m. Storms already moved through Western Chester County Saturday afternoon. The system is capable of producing quarter-size hail and damaging winds in excess of 60 miles per hour.

A severe thunderstorm warning is also in effect for parts of Ocean and Burlington counties until 6:45 p.m. A flash flood warning is also in effect in northern Chester County until 7:45 p.m.

The storms moved into areas north and west of Philadelphia around 4 p.m. and the Philadelphia area around 5 p.m.

Officials warn the storm is dangerous. Heavy rain, strong winds, lightning and hail are expected. Residents should move indoors to a sturdy building and stay away from windows.

Most of the day, the region was hot, humid and dry with temperatures hitting a high of about 90 degrees, although the muggy conditions made it feel a few degrees warmer.

Once the storms pass, the humidity and temperatures will fall. Sunday will be mostly sunny with highs hovering around 80 degrees -- near perfect weather for the Philadelphia Eagles home opener.

Heading into the work week, expect partly cloudy skies and temperatures in the upper 70s.
