A young girl continues to recover after she was struck in a hit-and-run crash in the Olney section of the city last week.
McKayla Williams, 5, was playing outside her home on Laveer Street back on April 16. While she was outside, witnesses say she was struck by a vehicle that was passing by.
“When my daughter went across the street, that’s when they saw the car zooming down the block,” said Robbyn Williams, the girl’s mother.
According to witnesses, the driver, an unidentified woman, briefly stepped out of the vehicle before fleeing the scene.
“I just grabbed my daughter and went upstairs and called 911,” Williams said. “After that, when I came outside, she was gone.”
McKayla was taken to St. Christopher’s Hospital where she was treated for a leg injury and seven fractures to her foot.
The family says the young girl will spend the next month in a cast and in a wheelchair before undergoing several more months of physical therapy. Doctors expect her to eventually make a full recovery.
Sources tell NBC10 that the initial report of the hit-and-run was taken to the 35th District but that the investigation stopped there. Williams says she plans to follow up with the accident investigation division.
“I don’t want her to get away with it,” Williams said. “I don’t think it’s fair to me nor her.”
Police have not yet released a description of the suspect. Witnesses describe the hit-and-run vehicle as a Bronze SUV.
