A man was shot and killed following a foot chase and fight with a police officer, according to officials.
Shortly before 4 p.m., police say a 2nd District Officer on patrol spotted an armed robbery in progress on the 6500 block of Castor Avenue in the Oxford Circle section of the city.
Investigators say the officer confronted an unidentified man who then fled on foot. The officer chased after him and tried to apprehend him in the back of a bank about a block away, according to police.
Investigators say a struggle ensued between the two men and the man assaulted the officer. The officer then shot his taser at the suspect but to no effect, according to investigators. The man then allegedly slammed the officer to the ground and began to slam his head on the ground.
Police say the officer then took out his gun and fired, striking the man in the chest.
The man was taken to Aria-Torresdale Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 4:52 p.m.
The officer was taken to Einstein Medical Center and treated for head injuries. He is now in stable condition.
Police have not yet revealed the suspect's name but say he was 45-years-old and had 8 prior arrests for assault, retail theft, rape, harassment and other offenses.
