Prosecutors in Philadelphia want a jury to decide whether the former son-in-law of Pennsylvania’s governor is guilty of stealing money during an federal sting.

Gerald Gibson, a former Philadelphia Police narcotics officer, is charged with several crimes including theft by deception for allegedly pocketing money from a car he was asked to search. Officials said the money was planted by investigators from the FBI and Philadelphia Police’s Internal Affairs Unit. Gibson was also allegedly caught on camera stealing the undetermined amount of cash.

The 43-year-old was placed on administrative leave in January following the sting, but was not officially charged until July 3.

At a status hearing Monday, the prosecution asked the judge for a jury trial in the case.

Gibson, who was married to Gov. Tom Corbett’s daughter Katherine, did not answer questions from reporters as he left the courtroom at Philadelphia’s Criminal Justice Center.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for early August.
