A second change of plea hearing has been set for former Philadelphia abortion doctor Kermit Gosnell in his federal "pill mill" case.
Dr. Gosnell, who is serving consecutive life sentences for the murder of babies, is accused of running an illegal pill mill out of his West Philadelphia clinic, the Women’s Medical Society.
Federal prosecutors say Dr. Gosnell would charge patients between $10 and $20 to write prescriptions for oxycodone, alprazolam and cough medicine with codeine. The patients would then have the prescriptions filled at pharmacies.
The acts allegedly began in July 2009 and continued until February 10, 2010 when officials from the Drug Enforcement Agency and Federal Bureau of Investigation raided the facility. It was that raid that uncovered the illegal abortion activities that eventually led to the former doctor’s murder convictions.
As many as 200 prescriptions were written in one night in February 2010, according to prosecutors. Officials say Dr. Gosnell made more than $200,000 from the alleged sales.
Dr. Gosnell was expected to accept a plea deal at a June 26 hearing, but that deal was rejected.
The second change of plea hearing, where Dr. Gosnell is expected to take the prosecution’s deal, is set for Tuesday.
