A New Jersey surgeon with a passion for flying small aircrafts was killed after his plane crashed outside of a Virginia home.

Investigators say Gregory Voit, 52, of Northfield, New Jersey, was flying a single-engine Beechcraft. The six-seater aircraft had taken off from the Woodbine Airport in New Jersey Wednesday morning and was to land at the Charlottesville Albemarle Airport in Virginia.

Around 11 a.m., police say Voit somehow lost control of the aircraft. The plane crash landed in the front yard of a home in Albemarle County, Virginia. Investigators say it struck several trees before finally coming to a rest about 100 feet from the home.

Voit was pronounced dead at the scene. No one else was inside the plane at the time and the house was not struck or damaged. No one else was hurt.

Officials continue to investigate the cause of the crash. Both the FAA and NTSB have been notified.

Voit was a surgeon at the Shore Medical Center specializing in General Orthopedic Surgery, Sports Medicine and Hand Surgery. He is survived by a wife and four children.
