HS Fight That Left Girl, 16, Dead May Have Been Over a Boy

A 16-year-old girl is dead after getting into a fight, possibly over a boy, inside a Wilmington, Delaware high school bathroom Thursday morning.

She was allegedly involved in a fight with two fellow students, according to school officials. The victim, identified only as a sophomore from New Castle, died at a nearby hospital with her parents at her side.

"A lot of families were destroyed today," Wilmington Mayor Dennis Williams said.

City spokeswoman Alexandra Coppadge said there was a confrontation in the women's restroom at Howard High School of Technology, which is part of the New Castle County Vocational Technical School District.

"Several female students were involved in a physical altercation at approximately 8:15 am this morning, in a main floor girls bathroom, just at the time classes began for the day," the school district said in a statement hours after the attack.

Police said in a statement that officers were called to the high school around 8:20 a.m. Later Thursday afternoon, police said a school resource officer called EMS at 8:18 a.m. for a student with head and stomach pain, and within minutes, the call became a CPR in progress.

Police said the girl had been flown to A.I. DuPont Children's Hospital in critical condition.

An autopsy will be held Friday and the investigation into the cause of death remains open.

Students who knew about the fight said it stemmed from a dispute over a boy.

Shauntea Bellamy cried as he sat outside the school after learning of the student's death. He worked with her as part of youth outreach programs and said she was set to volunteer in a summer program he organizes.

"It hurts when you know her personally and she's not one of my students who are out there in the streets like that," he said.

Williams said police were interviewing suspects Thursday evening, but didn't elaborate about whether arrests would be made.

State agencies will help provide support for those affected by the tragedy, Gov. Jack Markell said in a statement.

Students were surprised to hear about the girl's death saying the school is not known for being a trouble spot. Records show there have been 14 reported fights there last school year. Williams called the fight an isolated incident.

School was dismissed Thursday and officials had not determined yet whether classes would be held Friday, officials said.

Friends of the girl held a vigil in her memory outside the school Thursday night.

A mayoral debate on public safety scheduled to take place at the school Thursday night has been canceled.

After 65 Years, South Jersey Tavern Closing

Last call will be the final call for a well-known family-owned South Jersey tavern that's shutting its doors after six decades.

Kay's Red Eagle Tavern at Route 38 and Chapel Avenue in Cherry Hill will close for good Friday morning, owner Dori D'Alfonso said.

D'Alfonso's grandparents opened the tavern in 1950 and it's been in the family since. She's run the place for the past eight years.

"It sucks," she said of the decision to close. D'Alfonso said it's been tough to compete with other bars and restaurants in the area. The pub sits a short distance from the Cherry Hill Mall and Garden State Park shopping center.

The park, formerly home to a horse racetrack, used to be a boon for business with lots of jockeys and gamblers stopping by the dark brown brick-clad bar. When the track closed in 2001, business was never the same, D'Alfonso said.

The family has a buyer lined up for the property, but D'Alfonso wasn't sure what will take its place.

A Disney cruise ship came to the rescue of three migrants whose boat capsized in the Atlantic Ocean Thursday morning.

The Disney Fantasy was steaming toward the cruise line's private Bahamian island, Castaway Cay, when a passenger spotted the stranded boaters.

Passenger Maria Telese, a Philadelphia native who is on the ship with her family, said that passenger alerted a bartender who then notified the captain.

Telese said the ship circled the capsized boat until a small ship was sent out to rescue the people.

A spokesperson for Disney Cruise Lines said staff contacted the U.S. Coast Guard and waited 30 minutes for guardsmen to pick up the boaters.

The boaters were Cuban migrants and didn't suffer any injuries in the ordeal, a coast guard spokesman said.

Neighbors in Northeast Philadelphia are trying to shut down a swingers club before it even opens.

Saints and Sinners plans to open a new location in a former catering hall o0n the 8800 block of Frankford Avenue in Philadelphia's Holmesburg section.

Angry neighbors packed a community meeting at the Upper Holmesburg Civic Association Thursday night determined to stop the new club from opening.

Many feel that kind of adult venue will have a negative impact on the quality of life in their community.

"You have a grade school around the corner. You have several Catholic schools here...all with kids under 8th grade. They don't need to be exposed to this kind of stuff," said resident Mary Calhoun.

Work at the site has stopped for now.

Philadelphia's Department of Licenses and Inspections commissioner said the his staff will not issue any licenses other than those for the building's original intended use: a catering hall.

Man, 21, Dies After Crashing Motorcycle Into Car

A 21-year-old man died in Northeast Philadelphia's Crescentville neighborhood Thursday night after police say he crashed his motorcycle into the side of a car.

Police were called to Whitaker Avenue near Herkness Street just after 10:30 p.m. for the crash, Chief Inspector Scott Small said at the scene. When they arrived, they found a 2000 Lincoln Town Car with heavy damage to its passenger side accompanied by its 25-year-old driver, a badly damaged Honda motorcycle, and the 21-year-old man who had been riding the motorcycle suffering serious injuries.

Medics pronounced the motorcycle rider dead at the scene at 10:46 p.m., police said.

Small said a preliminary investigation into the crash revealed that the man on the motorcycle apparently ran a steady red light as he traveled north on Whitaker Avenue and crashed into the side of the Town Car as it crossed the intersection. Small said witnesses told police the Town Car had a green light, and that evidence showed clearly that the motorcycle struck the car.

Accident investigation officers remained at the scene late Thursday investigating the crash as distraught relatives of the man who died gathered, mourning the young man's death. Small said the man is from Philadelphia, but did not live in the immediate area where the crash occurred.

The driver of the Town Car remained at the scene, Small said, and police did not expect charges to be filed based on their preliminary investigation.
