Flyers Clinch Playoff Spot With Win Over Penguins

When the puck finally dropped, the cards were already set.

And in the Flyers’ ever most favor.

With losses by the Red Wings and Bruins to begin a wild Saturday, the Flyers knew heading into their home finale against the Penguins that just one win over the final two regular-season games would do the trick and punch their playoff ticket.

They pounced on the opportunity, beating resting Pittsburgh, 3-1, at the Wells Fargo Center to secure the Eastern Conference’s second wild-card spot for their 38th postseason appearance in franchise history and first in the Dave Hakstol era.

The Bruins (93 points) were left out after falling flat to the Senators, 6-1, while the Red Wings (93) won third place in the Atlantic Division — via regulation/overtime wins tiebreaker — despite losing to the Rangers, 3-2.

For the Flyers (94), Wayne Simmonds scored a pair of goals — Nos. 31 and 32 on the season — and Steve Mason finished the quest he started.

Pierre-Edouard Bellemare iced it with an empty-net goal.

Of course, the Flyers (40-27-14) made it dramatic, losing three straight games heading into Saturday, but still avoided missing the playoffs in consecutive seasons for the first time since the 1992-93 and 1993-94 campaigns.

The Flyers will be the No. 8 seed in the 2016 Stanley Cup playoffs and face No. 1 seed and NHL-leading Washington Capitals, who they went 2-2-0 against in the regular season with victories in overtime and the shootout.

The Penguins (48-26-8), who had won the first three meetings with the Flyers and were 14-1-0 in their last 15 games overall, are in the postseason for the 10th straight season. Pittsburgh will face either the New York Rangers or New York Islanders.

Notable goals
Pittsburgh struck first on a two-on-one rush as Nick Bonino beat Steve Mason at 11:57 of the first period off a nicely executed pass from Carl Hagelin for a 1-0 lead.

With Penguins third-string goalie Jeff Zatkoff unexpectedly in net, the Flyers answered with just over a minute left in the opening stanza when Jakub Voracek, skating along the side boards, put a perfect pass on Simmonds’ stick right in front for an easy tip-in and 1-1 tie.

The Flyers went to their bread and butter for the go-ahead marker at 16:58 of the second period. Shayne Gostisbehere sent a blast into a slew of bodies, where Simmonds did what he does best, deflecting the puck top shelf past Zatkoff.

Goalie report
Mason made his 12th consecutive start and 17th in the last 18 games.

He stopped 18 shots and went 10-4-3 in those final 17 starts — and not one clunker.

With regular starter Marc-Andre Fleury still out recovering from a concussion, 21-year-old Matt Murray started in net. Murray was forced to leave in the first period when Brayden Schenn inadvertently skated into his head.

Pittsburgh turned to Zatkoff, who hadn’t played in a game since Feb. 20. He made 21 saves.

Power play
The Flyers went on the game’s first 4:42 into the action and missed scoring by inches when Claude Giroux hit the crossbar on a finesse shot in close.

They also whiffed on a five-minute power play gifted by Tom Sestito, who was handed a game misconduct after interference on Ryan White and fighting Chris VandeVelde.

Overall, the Flyers went on 0 for 3 while the Penguins went 0 for 1.

Penalty kill
At 1-1 in the second period, the Flyers killed off a crucial four-on-three Penguins power play that saw quality looks for Pittsburgh.

Touching moment
Per Comcast SportsNet’s Breakfast on Broad host Sarah Baicker, the beloved Lauren Hart FaceTimed with Flyers chairman Ed Snider while singing “God Bless America” prior to the game.

Hart told Baicker, “If Ed Snider couldn’t be in the building, I’m bringing the building to him!”

Snider is dealing with health issues at his home in Southern California.

Missing Penguins
With their playoff spot and seed already secured, the Penguins sat their two leading scorers, center Sidney Crosby and defenseman Kris Letang (see story).

Scratches
After sitting Thursday for the first time in 31 games, Nick Cousins returned to the lineup. He replaced Scott Laughton, who was a healthy scratch.

Next up
The Flyers finish the regular season against the Islanders on Sunday night in Brooklyn.

The 2016 Stanley Cup playoffs begin Wednesday, April 13.

Boy's Eminem Cover Song Goes Viral

Like a typical pre-teen, 12-year-old Sparsh Shah loves a good game of Minecraft on the iPad. He spends a lot of time on his smart devices because unlike his peers, Sparsh can't run or walk or even stand.

But what he can do is sing.

The New Jersey eighth-grader has had 125 bone fractures so far in his young life, a result of osteogenesis imperfecta, a genetic disease that causes his bones to be very fragile.

The brittle bone disease has stunted Sparsh's growth and confined him to a wheelchair -- but it hasn't touched his spirit.

He's found his passion in music, and has written 10 original songs. But it's his clean cover of the 2010 Eminem song "Not Afraid," fused with Indian classical music, that's caught the ear of more than 2 million people on social media and launched him toward stardom.

Sparsh, who lives in Iselin, is paying it forward as an ambassador for St. Jude's, participating in dozens of charitable performances. And he's also in the National Honor Society.

"He's not treated as disabled," said father Hiren Shah. "It's made a huge difference in his outlook, always very positive."

Sparsh already has quite a collection of awards and trophies from competitions from all over the tri-state. But his goal is to reach a billion people, not just with music, but with his message.

"If I can inspire one person to change his or her life just because of me, it seems so humbling when I think about, that's enough purpose in my life to keep me going," he said, his right arm in a sling from a recent surgery to insert a rod like the ones in his left arm and both legs.

And it wouldn't hurt to hear from the artist that inspired him so.

"If we could perform a duet together, that would be the best thing ever," he said.

Jury Deliberations Continue in Police Brutality Case

Jurors will continue to deliberate Monday in the trial of two Philadelphia Police officers accused of doling out an unjustified beating to a man in North Philadelphia's Fairhill neighborhood in May 2013.

Former officers Sean McKnight, 31, and Kevin Robinson, 28, both face charges including aggravated assault, conspiracy and related offenses.

The charges stem from the ex-cops' May 29, 2013 encounter with Najee Rivera, 23, as Rivera rode a scooter on 6th Street near Cambria and the officers attempted to stop him for a traffic violation. Rivera fled, authorities have said, but McKnight and Robinson caught up with him, knocked him off his scooter and severely beat him, leaving him with a broken eye socket and gashes in his head that required staples.

The officers said Rivera, who they believed was a drug courier, attacked them when they stopped him, prompting them to use force to subdue him. Rivera was initially charged himself with aggravated assault, resisting arrest and other offenses. The Philadelphia District Attorney's Office, however, withdrew those charges after Rivera's girlfriend found and publicized surveillance video of his entire encounter with the officers.

When D.A. Seth Williams announced the charges against the officers, he said that Rivera could be heard screaming for help on the audio in the surveillance video.

Attorneys for the former officers have argued that their use of force was justified and that Rivera put up a fight when they tried to arrest him.

Rivera died in December two weeks after he was shot during a street fight in Kensington. The case against Robinson and McKnight went to jurors on Friday.

Philadelphia Police say gunpoint robberies at two Northeast Philadelphia 7-Eleven stores overnight in which the robbers pistol-whipped employees were the work of the same bandits.

In the first, police say one robber pistol-whipped an employee at the 7-Eleven on Frankford Avenue near Decatur Street, in Holmesburg, and stole cash and cigarettes from the store about 1:30 a.m.

Roughly a half-hour later, about 2 a.m., an armed robber walked into the 7-Eleven at Bridge and Thompson streets, in Bridesburg, and pistol-whipped an employee there. It's unclear what, if anything, was taken in that robbery.

By Sunday afternoon, police said they believe both stickups were the work of the same robbers. No arrests have been made.

Gail Garrett is pleading for the community's help to find her grandson's lost dog, Bunz.

Garrett's 15-year-old grandson has autism, and the grandmother said the comfort of his canine companion has helped her grandson open up more over the last year and a half. She said that since Bunz joined the family, her grandson has made major strides in his ability to communicate.

"We want to make sure we get him back so my grandson can continue to progress as he was," Garrett said. She said her grandson has been distraught since the dog went missing, and has withdrawn and stopped communicating.

Bunz managed to get out of the family's home in East Camden on Wednesday morning, and has not been seen since. Garrett believes someone might be housing the dog.

Bunz is a 1-year-old pit bull with a white coat and brown spots. Garrett said Bunz is very fearful of people and other animals.

The Garrett Family is offering a monetary reward for the safe return of Bunz.

Anyone with information on Bunz's whereabouts should contact Camden County Police at 856-757-7400.
