Exhaust Pipes Being Replaced After Apparent CO Deaths

A faulty boiler exhaust pipe is being blamed for the apparent carbon monoxide poisoning deaths of four people and a dog at a Wilmington, Delaware apartment complex. Now, the complex's owners plan to replace the entire exhaust system.

Evergreen Apartment Group, the owners of the Hidden Valley Apartment Complex at 500 Homestead Road, posted a notice Saturday saying an investigation in conjunction with county authorities found the deadly gas leak came from exhaust piping in Building G.

Police found four residents — three in one apartment and one in another — dead inside their homes around 5 p.m. Friday night. Officers were called to the complex after family members abruptly stopped hearing from their loved ones the day before.

The complex was evacuated and eight other residents were taken local hospitals for treatment. Only one person remained hospitalized Saturday.

Evergreen officials say the boiler and exhaust system is required to inspected by state officials every two years. It passed the last inspection, the owners said.

The owners have decided to replace the exhaust pipes in every building in the complex as a precaution, the letter said.

Since the replacement will require boilers to be shut down, residents will be forced to leave until the work is completed. A timeline for the work wasn't available.

While officials believe carbon monoxide poisoning is to blame for the deaths, they're waiting for autopsies to positively confirm the cause of death.

Carbon monoxide is a colorless and odorless gas that is produced by combustible engines in vehicles, gas generators and other heating elements. Poisoning symptoms are described as flu-like with dizziness, nausea and chest pain. People who are drunk or sleeping are especially susceptible to death from the gas.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says more than 4,000 people are hospitalized every year from CO poisoning. More than 400 people die. Here's some tips to avoid CO poisoning in your home.

A Josh Hart three capped a 10-0 run that turned a five-point deficit into a five-point lead with eight minutes to go and Villanova is off to the Final Four after a 64-59 win in the NCAA Tournament South Region title game over Kansas, the No. 1 team in the country.

In the final 33 seconds, Ryan Arcidiacono made four straight foul shots and Kris Jenkins and Jalen Brunson made two apiece.

Villanova shot 17 for 18 from the foul line two days after shooting 18 for 19 against Miami.

Villanova outscored the No. 1 team in the country 24-14 over the final 10 minutes.

In a riveting matchup of two teams ranked No. 1 at various times this year, Villanova built a nine-point lead late in the second half only to watch Kansas reel off nine straight points to take a five-point lead at 45-40 with 10:48 left.

But Mikal Bridges and Daniel Ochefu scored and Ryan Arcidiacono and Hart hit threes to give the Wildcats a five-point lead three minutes later.

Kansas got within two at 52-50, 54-52 and 56-54, but Ryan Arcidiacono hit two free throws at 0:33 to extend the lead to four.

Frank Mason bombed in a long straight-on 3 at 0:25 to cut the lead to one at 58-57 before Arcidiacono, Jenkins and Brunson sealed the game from the foul line.

WHAT IT MEANS

Villanova advanced Saturday to its fifth Final Four and second in eight years under Jay Wright. The Wildcats also reached the Final Four in 1939, 1971 (vacated), 1985, when they won the national title, and 2009.

With the win, Villanova improved to 33-5, matching last year’s team for most wins in school history.

Kansas, making its 27th consecutive appearance in the NCAA Tournament, finished the season 33-5. The Jayhawks had won 17 straight games since losing by 13 points to Iowa State on Jan. 25, in Ames, Iowa.

Jay Wright became the ninth NCAA coach to reach two or more Final 4s with his current school.

STAT OF THE DAY

Villanova shot 2 for 9 from three in each half.

TURNING POINT

Bridges’ steal with 34 seconds left and Villanova up 56-54 got the Wildcats the ball back, and Arcidiacono hit two foul shots at 0:33 for a double-digit lead.

BY THE NUMBERS

Hart, Jenkins and Arcidiacono all scored 13 points … Devonte’ Graham (17) and Wayne Seldon Jr. (16) led Kansas … Ochefu had 10 points and eight rebounds … Villanova committed only nine turnovers.

WHAT'S NEXT

Villanova faces Oklahoma on Saturday in the national semifinals at NRG Stadium (formerly Reliant Stadium) in Houston. Oklahoma defeated Oregon in Anaheim.

The winner plays Monday for the national championship against the survivor of the games between Virginia and Syracuse early Sunday evening and North Carolina and Notre Dame later Sunday.
