As a local college athlete's family prepares for his funeral they now know exactly how he died.

An autopsy by the Delaware County Medical Examiner's Office determined that Dante Desimone died from blunt force trauma to his head. Desimone's death was ruled accidental.

Desimone, 18, died after being struck by a car after it collided with another car along the 500 block of W Baltimore Pike in Clifton Heights, Pa. around 9 p.m. Sunday.

A public viewing is scheduled for Desimone Friday night from 5 to 9 and Saturday from 8:30 to 9:45 a.m. at D'Anjolell Memorial Home on West Chester Pike in Broomall, Pa. A funeral mass will be held Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at Holy Cross Church in Springfield, Pa. with burial to follow at Saints Peter and Paul Cemetery on Sproul Road in Springfield, Pa.

The Upper Darby High School grad and two friends were walking on the sidewalk when the car went onto the sidewalk after being struck by another car.

Following the wreck, Desimone was rushed to Mercy-Fitzgerald Hospital where Desimone died. His friend Tim Robison, who also has ties to Upper Darby High, was left in serious condition at the Hospital at the University of Pennsylvania. Family members say a third friend with the teens wasn't hurt.

The drivers of both cars stopped following the crash and were cooperating with the investigation. DUI wasn't suspected.

Desimone was a graduate of Upper Darby High School where he played lacrosse and hockey and began attending nearby Neumann University this past fall studying sports entertainment and playing lacrosse.

Ralph Desimone told NBC10 that his family was devastated by his son's death. He said his son overcame a bone disorder that required surgeries to become a college athlete.

The Desimones took part in a candlelight vigil Monday night near the scene of the deadly crash.

"He was a good boy," said his mother while in tears. "He didn't deserve this."

Fire broke out at an area strip mall overnight.

Flames began to shoot from a second-floor business at the Bustleton-Welsh stores located along the 1900 block of Welsh Road in the Bustleton section of Northeast Philadelphia around 4:45 a.m. Wednesday.

According to Philadelphia firefighters, no one was hurt in the blaze.

It took firefighters only about 20 minutes to put out the fire.

No official word was given on what caused the fire at the strip of stores that includes a nail salon and dentist's office.

Firefighters, however, focused in on the second floor window of a corner spa. They said it's possible that the fire was electrical in nature and began in that business.

It wasn’t clear if the fire damaged any of the other businesses.

A man accused of shooting and killing a young father all over a backpack is due in court today.

Tyreek McNeil, 22, is accused of gunning down Jose Gabino-Aparicio as he walked along the 800 block of Watkins Street in South Philadelphia in the early hours of Sept. 26.

Since his arrest in the days after the murder, McNeil has remained in jail awaiting Wednesday's preliminary hearing on murder, robbery and weapons charges, according to court records.

Investigators say that McNeil shot and killed Gabino-Aparicio as he returned home.

"The reality is that my husband will never walk through that door. Our youngest son will never know his father," said Gabino-Aparicio's wife Dionica Hernandez in the hours after his death.

Hernandez says her 22-year-old husband was walking home from work with a friend when they stopped at his brother-in-law's bakery at 8th and Watkins Streets to get bread for the family's breakfast.

"He would always go by there to get us some bread so we would have enough food to eat," she told NBC10's Nefertiti Jaquez in Spanish.

As they left, the men were confronted by a man on a bike who demanded Gabino-Aparicio's backpack and cellphone.

The men got into a struggle and Gabino-Aparicio was shot three times in the back, according to police.

Tyreek McNeil, 21, is accused of shooting and killing Jose Gabino Aparicio on Sept. 26, 2013.He was rushed to Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. Hernandez says she rushed to be at her husband's side, but didn't make it there before he died.

Following the shooting, the suspect left the bike he was riding on. Police didn't say if evidence from that bike positively linked McNeil to the crime.

McNeil is no stranger to the law.

According to online court records, McNeil pleaded guilty to a weapons charge in 2010 and received two years probation as well as counseling and being ordered to obtain his GED.

Springsteen Jabs Christie on Fallon

Jimmy Fallon got some help from one of the most famous people to come from the Garden State for his latest bit mocking New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie's traffic jam scandal.

Music legend Bruce Springsteen joined Fallon onstage to perform a new version of "Born to Run," featuring lyrics about getting stuck on the George Washington Bridge.

The two, who were both sporting The Boss' signature "Born in the U.S.A." look, used music to address revelations that Christie's aides orchestrated lane closings on the world's most heavily trafficked bridge, apparently as political payback to a local mayor.

"In the day we sweated out on the street stuck in traffic on the GWB," Fallon sang with his best Springsteen impersonation, "they shut down the toll booths of glory cause we didn't endorse Christie."

"Oh, maybe this Bridgegate was just payback, it's a b**** slap to the state Democrats," Fallon sang. "We gotta get out while we can. We're stuck in Governor Chris Christie's Fort Lee New Jersey traffic jam."

The Boss joined in on the fun, singing as if he was one of the motorists stuck on the bridge during the four days of lane closures last September.

"You've got Wall Street masters stuck cheek-to-cheek with blue collar truckers, and man I really gotta take a leak," Springsteen sang.

Fallon sang on the final verse: "Someday governor, I don't know when, this will all end, but till then you're killing the working man, who's stuck in the Governor Chris Christie Fort Lee New Jersey traffic jam."

The performance might not get a laugh from Christie, who is one of Springsteen's biggest fans -- he claims to know every lyric of every one of the musician's songs, according to MSNBC

Christie even belted out "Thunder Road" on a 2012 "Late Night" episode.

A car sideswiped a police car in Center City this morning sending one person to the hospital.

According to Philadelphia Police, a Nissan Altima crashed into the police cruiser at 30 S 17th Street -- that is between Market and Chestnut Streets around 8:15 a.m.

The crash landed the female officer in Hahnemann Hospital where she was expected to be treated and released for undisclosed injuries, according to police.

The driver of the Altima wasn't hurt. The driver stopped and was cooperating with the investigation, which remained ongoing.

The Altima had some visible front-end damage.

It’s unclear if dense fog blanketing the city Wednesday morning played a role in the wreck.

Dense Fog Blankets the Region

Thick fog slowed down commutes this morning on the ground and in the air.

A variety of variables such as moisture from yesterday's rain, fast-falling temperatures and the absence of wind sent visibilities down to zero in places as diverse as Wilmington, Del.; Allentown, Pa. and Atlantic City, N.J., according to NBC10 First Alert Meteorologist Bill Henley.

"This is the worst fog I've seen in this area in 20 years," said Henley.

The National Weather Service issued a Dense Fog Advisory through noon for the entire region calling for visibilities of ¼ mile or less -- a distance that constitutes thick fog, according to NBC10 First Alert Weather meteorologist Bill Henley.

As of 8:15 a.m., visibility dropped to 1/8 of a mile and with fog up and down the East Coast more than 50 incoming/outgoing flights were canceled and another 50-plus flights were delayed.

The fog was so thick that you couldn’t see across the Delaware River from Camden to Philadelphia.

Temps dipped into the 30s creating some black ice and frosty roads, especially north and west of the city. Speed restrictions were put into effect on some area highways and bridges.

The basic advice is to take it easy out on area roads and to leave yourself plenty of time to get where you need to go. Also leave plenty of room between you and other cars and don't use your high beams.

The Weather Service advised that it wasn't clear exactly when the thick fog would burn off.

Teen Brings Gun to School

A teenager brought a gun to a city high school this morning, according to investigators.

According to Philadelphia Police a gun was found inside the Knowledge Is Power Program’s DuBois Collegiate Academy at 5070 Parkside Avenue in the Parkside neighborhood.

Officials say a 17-year-old boy was involved in a fight with another student when school opened around 8 a.m. Wednesday. After that incident, some students alerted officials that the teen possibly had a gun on him.

"They called police immediately and officers arrived on scene and made contact with the student," said Philadelphia Police Lieutenenant John Walker. "They searched his book bag and recovered a loaded .45 caliber handgun."

The teen was taken into custody and charged with weapons offenses as a juvenile. School officials say the teen never threatened anyone with the gun or made an attempt to use it during the fight.

The school has a no gun policy and the student will likely be expelled. Police have not yet revealed why the teen had a gun in the first place. However, a school representative told NBC10.com's Deanna Durante that the student told investigators that he carried the gun to and from school for protection.

KIPP DuBois is an open-enrollment charter school serving 360 ninth to 12th graders. According to the school's website, the school strives to "...provide students with a relevant, exciting and individualized learning environment, allowing students to emerge with the critical thinking, global vision and knowledge or self necessary to succeed in college, the competitive world beyond and be leaders in their communities."

KIPP does not have a security force or metal detectors. Instead, it relies on students to come forward when they hear or see something suspicious. Officials say the fact that the initial reports of the gun came from students shows that their system works.

"No one was in danger, other than to say that this young man did have something in his bag," said Marc Manella, the school's CEO. "It's a scary situation and we're very grateful that the police came out so quickly and it was handled safely and everyone's okay."

Parents of the students were notified and arrived at school to pick up their kids Wednesday morning. Dana Brown broke down in tears shortly after picking up her son. She says that despite receiving a school alert stating that the students were safe, she was still shaken by the news.

"I'm still shaking," she said. "I couldn't explain the feeling. My legs are still like noodles."

Parents who spoke to NBC10 say they've always agreed with the school's non-traditional security procedures. In light of Wednesday morning's incident however, they say they now want those procedures to be reviewed. Manella still believes the school's system works however.

"Our primary concern is always the safety of our students," he said. "We're looking at this as our system working. He was not in the school for even an hour from my understanding, before he was found to have the gun and he was apprehended by police."

Vick Website Controversy

$

An online auction website apologetically cut ties with Eagles Quarterback Michael Vick after his tweet of the site sparked outrage among some people.

On Monday, Vick posted a tweet on his Twitter account endorsing QuiBids, a popular auction website.

Anyone use QuiBids? Just saw a brand new iPad end for $24…tweet at me what you win for a RT!! Start bidding here: http://t.co/Up9wqslHTN

The Tweet drew anger from numerous QuiBids users who were against the website working with Vick due to the Eagles quarterback's conviction for running a dogfighting ring several years ago. After receiving feedback on their Facebook page, officials with Quibids responded:

We would like to sincerely apologize for the endorsements posted on Michael Vick's Facebook and Twitter accounts yesterday.

As most employees here at QuiBids are dog owners, we want you to know we would never, ever condone animal abuse, and we're sorry that our recent actions did not reflect our values.

Please know that we've had Michael delete his post and have stopped all future campaigns with him. Additionally, we'll be making a contribution to the ASPCA to help the fight against animal cruelty.

We very much care about you and what you think and will take measures to ensure this doesn't happen again.

Blake Brown, the social media manager for QuiBids also contacted NBC10 and wrote the following:

We believe everyone deserves a second chance, but our customers were clearly dissatisfied with the choice to be sponsored by Vick, so we pulled the endorsement.  Our customers will always be number one for us.

Vick's spokesman Chris Shigas reached out to NBC10 on Wednesday and responded to the company's message.

"Mike Vick has never had an endorsement contract with QuiBids," Shigas wrote. "The company paid a third party to get Vick to post its sponsored message to his millions of Twitter and Facebook fans. It is unfortunate and unprofessional for QuiBids to "cancel" an agreement that never existed with Vick."

Vick continues to receive public criticism over five years since serving a 19-month stint in federal prison for running a dog fighting operation. Since joining the Philadelphia Eagles in 2009, Vick has partnered with the Humane Society and has given numerous public speeches -- especially at schools -- condemning animal abuse.

Hot Coffee Tosser Identified

We now know the identity of a man who was caught on camera throwing a full cup of hot coffee at a Dunkin' Donuts employee.

Philadelphia Police just don't where he is.

Police identified the accused coffee tosser, previously known by store employees only as "Will," as 36-year-old William Houser of the 3400 block of N Carlisle Street.

Police say Houser -- who remained on the loose Wednesday -- was angry over an expired coupon when he tossed the coffee onto the woman's face on the afternoon of Jan. 8 inside the doughnut shop at N. Broad Street and Wyoming Avenue in the city's Logan section.

Houser faces an aggravated assault charge for the caught-on-camera outburst.

According to investigators, he frequents the store location. Last week, police say Houser walked into the store and ordered a coffee. He tried using a coupon to pay for the coffee but wasn’t allowed to since the coupon expired, according to investigators.

After paying for the cup of coffee, he got into a verbal argument with the woman behind the counter, investigators said.

During the argument, he began to leave the store but as he walked towards the door he turned back around and thrust his cup of hot liquid into the worker’s face.

"I was in shock, I saw him keep jumping at me. I knew he was going to do something," said Sheree Sutton, the employee.

"It was hot, yeah, but most of it hit my shirt the same time it hit my face, so I didn't feel as much, but I felt it," Sutton said.

Sutton was treated at an area hospital for coffee burns and some problems with her eyes that persisted days later.

"Sometimes people like that need help, they need help to control their anger. I hope he gets the help he deserves,” said Sutton.

Police hope that someone knows where Houser is hiding and that they will alert detectives by calling 215-686-8477, by texting a tip to 773847 or by submitting an anonymous tip online.

Who Is Architect Norman Foster?

$

Known for creating innovative and unique buildings and structures, Norman Foster and his design firm have left their mark on skylines across the Earth.

Based in London, Foster and his firm Foster + Partners have been lauded by the architecture industry for cutting-edge designs and sustainability, garnering more than 600 awards and international fame.

Some of Foster’s most well-known buildings are located in London. “The Gherkin,” as it’s known to locals, is an oblong shaped circular tower and home to Swiss Re insurance company. Built in 2003, the 41-story tower is one of the most iconic buildings in the British capital’s skyline.

London City Hall is another unique structure designed by the firm. Sitting on a large plaza that opens the structure to its citizens, the building is also highly sustainable – a hallmark of Foster’s designs. A curved form allows the building to be shaded as much as possible and cut down on air conditioning. The interior is also naturally ventilated and the cooling system uses groundwater pumped from underneath the structure.

The Millennium Bridge, a 1,049 foot pedestrian bridge, crosses the River Thames connecting St. Paul’s Cathedral to the Tate Modern on in the city’s Southwark neighborhood. The bridge has been featured many times in various international films including Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, where it was destroyed by Death Eaters.

Further west in Germany, Foster spearheaded the restoration of the Reichstag – Germany’s parliament building – which was heavily damaged by war over the decades. Naturally, the existing stone structure was given a facelift, but with that came a new roof terrace. The terrace surrounds a glass dome cupola that shines light into the center of the building. For energy efficiency, the building burns refined vegetable oil to produce electricity.

In the United States, Foster designed the Hearst Tower in New York City. The glass and steel skyscraper rises out of a 1920s masonry building originally commissioned by William Randolph Hearst. The building’s lobby is completely housed inside the original six-story structure. It was also the first office building in Manhattan to achieve the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED gold certification.

Apple's new headquarters, a 2.8 million-square-foot ring-shaped structure, in Cupertino, Calif., is also being designed by Foster. The $5 billion project has been nicknamed the "Spaceship" and will have 100 acres of green space in the center of and around the building.

One of his more unique projects, Foster’s firm designed Spaceport America in the Jornada del Muerto desert in Las Cruces, N.M. The world’s first commercial spaceport, it features launch pads, runways and a terminal and is home to Virgin Galactic.

New Comcast Tower's Impact

$

A new skyscraper will soon be reshaping the Philadelphia skyline for the second time in a decade and along with the physical building, there are hopes that the development will redefine the city's destiny.

On Wednesday, Comcast CEO Brian Roberts unveiled The Comcast Innovation and Technology Center, a 59-story glass and steel skyscraper, from the 45th floor of the company's global headquarters, Comcast Center, in Center City Philadelphia.

"I don't think my dad could have ever imagined we'd outgrow this amazing home," Roberts said, speaking of his father Ralph Roberts, who founded the company. "We want to have the greatest technological capabilities of any high-rise in America in this building."

Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Corbett, City Council President Darrell Clarke and the head of Liberty Property Trust, the real estate company constructing the building, were all on hand to take part in the announcement.

Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter also joined in via video conference from Seattle, Wash., where he is delivering a speech.

Being built across the street at 18th and Arch Streets, the tower and its spire will soar 1,121 feet into the sky and house Comcast employees, tech startups, NBC10, Telemundo 62 and a new Four Seasons Hotel. The center was designed by famed British architect Norman Foster, known for London's "The Gherkin" and Millennium Bridge and Apple's new "Spaceship" headquarters.

"This building will serve as yet another physical monument to the transformation of our great city," Nutter said. "Philadelphia is a city that belongs on the world stage."

While the physical construction of a new tower is at the center of this development, leaders are hoping it will serve as a catalyst to turn Philadelphia into a hub for entertainment, and most especially, technology and tech talent.

Comcast plans to have its software development teams housed inside the building's "urban lofts," which include thee-story atriums in several parts of the building, alongside news and entertainment content creators from its subsidiary NBCUniversal.

The company also seeks to nurture new talent inside the center -- offering state-of-the-art space to growing technology companies.

"We also want to incubate new companies and partners that we work with. We will have space dedicated to incubation and working with academic institutions," said Roberts. "And really try to do research and development."

"What is the future going to be 10 years from now?" Gov. Tom Corbett asked. "Maybe the next Google is going to start in one of those rooms."

Venture capitalist Josh Kopelman, whose company First Round Capital moved into Center City from Montgomery County in 2012, is encouraged by the new development and its potential impact on Philly's growing tech scene.

"More tech talent in Philly, attracted by Comcast, can only help the environment here," he said. "We’ve seen Comcast doing more and more to encourage entrepreneurism in Philadelphia – and I love the fact that they are doubling down here."

Chris Cera, owner of Old City software company Arcweb, founded Philly Startup Leaders -- one the largest groups of local entrepreneurs in the region. He's "delighted" Comcast is strengthening its roots in the city and hopes that translates to the company making a larger investment in the local tech scene than they have in the past.

“I would love to see Comcast acquire a Philadelphia startup. That would be a huge thing that would get the city excited and the scene that I play in excited," he said.

Cera, a Drexel University graduate and lifelong local, said one building won't be enough to transform Philadelphia into the East Coast Silicon Valley. However, he says it can stop the "brain drain" of technology talent, who go to college in the city before leaving with their new ideas.

"That building could have been built in New York," he said. "I do believe that Comcast is the type of company that is going to go after world-class talent."

Reported Bird Strikes Rising

$

0

Wednesday marked the fifth anniversary of the Miracle on the Hudson.

On January 15, 2009, US Airways Flight 1549 took off from LaGuardia Airport in New York City. Suddenly, the plane struck a flock of geese and lost engine power. The pilot “Sully” Sullenberger, made an emergency landing in the Hudson River, saving the lives of all 155 passengers.

Following the incident, the Federal Aviation Administration instructed airports across the country to do something about bird populations around their property. The NBC10 Investigators uncovered however that the number of reported bird strikes has increased dramatically at Philadelphia International Airport.

In the years following the “Miracle,” 731 bird strikes have been reported. In the five years before the miracle, only 317 bird strikes were reported.  At 131%, it’s the sharpest increase of reported bird strikes in the country.

NBC10 presented those numbers to Keith Brune, Philly International’s deputy director. Brune insisted that the sharp increase is due to the fact that bird strikes are now reported much more often than they were five years ago.

“We do everything possible to make it unpalatable for birds or wildlife to hang out here,” said Brune.

Philadelphia International has two biologists who track bird populations within five miles of the airport. They also have a staff of 35 people who patrol the airfield and perimeter. The staff members use several tactics to scare off birds, including shooting flare guns.

However, NBC10’s Chris Cato still spotted plenty of birds around or on airport property on Wednesday. In less than an hour, a hawk was spotted circling in the same area where planes were landing, Canada geese were seen swimming near the airport and a flock of small black birds were perched on the fence just beyond the runway.

Brune says studies have shown that the bird population on airport property has actually decreased but that there’s not much they can do about birds beyond their fence line.

“We’re doing virtually everything we can short of putting some sort of big dome over our airport,” he said.

The FAA mandated airports are responsible for bird activity within a five mile radius of their facility.

“If we do identify areas where there are potential hazards we will try to work with those respectful landowners to help them with their problem, which in effect helps us,” Brune said.

The FAA vowed to crack down on airports that are not being proactive about reducing bird strikes. NBC10 asked FAA officials for their assessment of Philly International’s bird management strategy. The FAA refused to comment on this however.

The FAA’s latest inspection report of PHL does not mention bird activity or bird strikes.
