Police identified a man who was shot after he allegedly pointed his gun at officers.

On Thursday around 6:30 p.m., officers in plainclothes inside an unmarked vehicle spotted Dayquane Thomas on the 3100 block of North 15th Street. Investigators say Thomas, 22, was wanted as a possible suspect for a previous shooting.

When the officers stepped out of the vehicle and identified themselves, Thomas allegedly ran through an open lot filled with debris and trash and then took out a handgun. The officers chased after Thomas who ran into a backyard on the 3100 block of North Carlisle Street, according to investigators.

Thomas then allegedly turned around and pointed his gun towards the officers. One of the officers, an 8-year veteran, opened fire, striking Thomas in the lower back and legs. Thomas dropped his gun and fell to the ground, police said.

Responding officers took Thomas to Temple University Hospital where he is currently in critical condition. No one else was hurt during the incident.

Police say they recovered Thomas’ weapon, a Glock Model 30, .45 caliber semiautomatic that was loaded with eight .45 caliber rounds in the magazine. Police also say Thomas was wanted for two Absconder warrants and one contempt of court warrant.

Thomas is charged with aggravated assault, simple assault, violation of the uniform firearms act and other related offenses.

Internal Affairs and the District Attorney’s Office are reviewing the incident. The officer who shot Thomas will be placed on administrative duty pending the outcome of the preliminary investigation.

Oregon Defeats St. Joe's 69 to 64

Top-seeded Oregon hit two big three-pointers in the final two minutes, Saint Joseph's had one critical mental error in the last minute and the eighth-seeded Hawks saw their season come to an end in a 69-64 loss late Sunday night in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

Oregon (30-6), riding a 10-game winning streak, advances to the Sweet 16 in the West Region and will play fourth-seeded Duke Thursday at around 10 p.m.

A trey by Tyler Dorsey with 1:54 left put Oregon up 61-60. After DeAndre' Bembry made two free throws for Saint Joseph's (28-8), Dillon Brooks swished a three from the right wing at 1:20 to make it 64-62.

The Hawks, who had a lot of trouble all night getting open looks, made one-too-many passes and had a shot clock violation with 43 seconds to play.

Oregon got two free throws from Elgin Cook and then Bembry had a quick layup to make it 66-64 with 26.8 seconds remaining.

Casey Benson was fouled and he made only one free throw but Bembry, looking for a tying three-pointer, lost the handle with 9.2 seconds left. In the scramble that tied the ball up, the Hawks were called for a foul and Dorsey iced the game with two free throws.

Brooks led Oregon with 25 points, Cook had 18 and Dorsey 14.

Bembry had 16 — 14 in the second half — plus 12 rebounds. Lamarr Kimble had 11 points and Aaron Brown and Shavar Newkirk 10 each.

The Hawks were down 10 when Brooks hit a three-pointer from the right wing early in the second half, but they responded with a 10-0 run to tie it at 45 — the first since 2-2 — at 10:17. Shortly after that, St. Joe's had an 8-0 run for a 58-51 lead with 5:33 left but Oregon scored the next seven, setting up the frantic finish.

Early struggles
It felt as though Saint Joseph's should feel fortunate to only trail 32-27 at the half. Maybe it was Oregon's five blocked shots or the Hawks' early foul trouble.

A 13-5 run put Oregon up 30-20 with 3:02 to play. At that point, the Ducks were 12 of 15 from the line while the Hawks were 2 of 5.

St. Joe's had eight turnovers and 11 fouls with Aaron Brown and Pierfrancesco Oliva with three apiece. Isaiah Miles had two and only played six minutes with the basket that tied the game at 2 his only points.

Also, Bembry seemed to have an Oregon player glued to him. After a dunk at the 16:22 mark, he didn't score again, missing three shots, including his only three. However, he refused to force the issue and had seven rebounds. It was a far cry from his 20-point first half in Friday's end.

The Hawks were strong on the defensive end, holding the Ducks to 33 percent shooting and getting them to take 13 three-pointers, only making two. But Oregon was 12 of 15 from the line to St. Joe's 7 of 10.

Connections
This was the second meeting between the schools, with Oregon winning the first one, 55-44, on Dec. 19, 1938. That game at the start of the 1938-39 season helped propel the Ducks to the first NCAA title. That team finished 29-5.

There are three graduates of Saint Joseph's with ties to the Pacific Northwest. The obvious one is former Hawks coach Jack Ramsey, who was coach of the Portland Trailblazers when they won their only NBA title. His assistant was Jack McKinney. The third is former Oregon women's coach Paul Westhead.

One other Duck note, walk-on Phil Richmond is the son of former NBA standout Mitch Richmond, who played for Oregon coach Dana Altman in junior college. The younger Richmond was a manager last season.

Retired State Trooper Shot Dead After Killing 2 People on Pa. Turnpike Robbery: A retired state trooper killed a turnpike toll collector and a security guard in a holdup attempt at a toll plaza and then was shot dead by troopers while trying to escape with the money, authorities said. Clarence Briggs, who retired four years ago, confronted two Pennsylvania Turnpike toll collectors with a handgun on Sunday morning at the Fort Littleton toll plaza in Dublin Township, 65 miles west of Harrisburg, the state capital, police said. Briggs ordered both into an adjoining office and tried to tie them up but fled after a struggle, they said. Both employees left the building as a fare collection vehicle arrived and a security guard emerged, they said. Briggs then shot and killed one of the toll collectors, Danny Crouse, who had been on the job for less than three months, and Ronald Heist, a retired York police officer who was employed by a detective agency and was working as turnpike security, Capt. David Cain said. Briggs then fired at the fare collection vehicle, Cain said, and after the driver fled he jumped into the vehicle and drove it to his car, which was parked at the end of a service ramp a few hundred yards away where he started unloading money from the collection vehicle, Cain said. Troopers arrived within minutes, and the first trooper exchanged shots with Briggs, who was wounded and died at the scene, police said.

Apple Starts Week with New iPhone Launch: Apple is kicking off a busy week: Today the giant tech company will host reporters and analysts at its Silicon Valley headquarters for a product launch event. On Tuesday, its lawyers will square off with authorities in federal court over the FBI's demand for help unlocking a San Bernardino killer's encrypted iPhone. The tech giant's dispute with the government has commanded headlines for weeks, but it may get scant mention at the company's product event. Instead, CEO Tim Cook is expected to show off some new additions to the current family of iPhone and iPad devices at Monday's gathering. Apple could use a lift. IPhone sales are levelling off, after surging last year to record levels that made Apple the world's biggest company, by stock market value. And many are wondering if Cook can come up with another big hit. So far, however, there have been no hints of any dramatic announcements, such as last year's highly anticipated Apple Watch debut, or major initiatives like the company's long-rumored but yet-to-materialize streaming TV service.

A 20-year-old freshman at Skidmore College died after falling from a third-story rooftop near the University of Delaware on Saturday afternoon, according to campus police and college officials.

Willem Golden, of Cohassett, Massachusetts, was a first-year student and hockey player at Skidmore, according to the college.

"Will had been a member of the Skidmore community for less than a year but had already made many connections with students, faculty, staff, and teammates who will grieve his loss very deeply," Skidmore President Philip A. Glotzbach wrote in a letter to the school community Sunday.

Police in Newark, Delaware, said the man — identified by Skidmore as Golden — fell from a third-story roof on the 100 block of West Main Street shortly before 4 p.m. Saturday. He was unresponsive at the scene and died at the hospital.

According to the University of Delaware, the residence housed fraternity members but is not sanctioned by the fraternity. Online documents reveal the Sigma Pi fraternity hosts events at the house, The Patriot Ledger reports.

Golden was a member of the Skidmore Hockey team and previously played lacrosse and ice hockey at Cohasset High School.

Newark police and University of Delaware police are investigating. It's unclear why Golden was on the roof.
