Pair of High-Rise Implosions in Philly Saturday

A pair of Philadelphia high-rises will be reduced to rubble Saturday as the Philadelphia Housing Authority modernizes one of its complexes.

The PHA plans to implode two of the three Norman Blumberg Development high-rises around 7:15 a.m. Saturday.

The 18-story buildings will come down as the PHA transitions the 8-acre Sharswood/Blumberg community – which currently has around 500 units across three towers and 15 low-rise buildings – into a mix of affordable and market-rate rentals and homes, says the PHA. The buildings date from the 1960s.

The 13-story senior housing building will be rehabilitated as part of the plan that will bring 1,000 homes to the development, said the PHA.

Besides the implosions and rehabbing plans, the $500,000 Choice Neighborhood Initiative (CNI) Planning Grant will also help revitalize the Ridge Avenue commercial corridor and build recreational fields and community gardens.

A comfort center will be set up for resident evacuated for the implosion. Residents can go to Nellie Reynolds Gardens at Ridge and Glenwood Avenue to wait out the implosion.

Residents located in the dust zone are able to stay, but must stay inside until the all-clear is given after the blast.

PHA is providing more information on its website.

Changes for This Weekend's Snow Storm

Before you scramble to buy a big bag of rock salt this weekend, read this, because there are changes to the forecast.

The storm that's set to bring us winter weather on Sunday will now be tracking farther east. That means the chance of significant snow is much smaller than what was shaping up earlier this week.

Most of the area will see less than an inch of snow with mostly rain and possibly some mixing. There's a possibility a tract of the north and west suburbs will see 1-3 inches of snow. But, that's not a guarantee.

The storm could also speed up and arrive sooner. Points south and east could start to see precipitation Saturday night. The bulk of the storm will arrive Sunday. Wet roads should be expected in the morning. Any snow will fall Sunday evening.

Cold air will continue through the beginning of the week, but a big warm-up is coming midweek.

One man is in the hospital while another is in custody after a stabbing and assault with a baseball bat led to a barricade situation in Kensington, according to police.

Police say two suspects stabbed a 32-year-old man several times and assaulted him with a baseball bat on the 3200 block of Kensington Avenue at 12:26 p.m. Saturday. The suspects then ran inside a tattoo parlor on the street and refused to come out, according to investigators. One suspect was armed with a gun while the other was armed with a bat and screwdriver, police said.

A barricade situation was declared but the scene was cleared around 1:30 p.m. Police say at least one of the suspects was taken into custody and they recovered the screwdriver and baseball bat. Police have not yet revealed his identity or the specific charges the suspect faces. They also have not yet revealed whether they are still searching for the second suspect.

The victim was taken to the hospital. Officials have not yet revealed his condition.

Crews battled a fire at a Delaware apartment complex Saturday evening.

The two-alarm fire started at the Edge of Greentree Apartments on the 700 block of Appletree Court in Claymont, Delaware shortly after 6 p.m.

"It went from smoke to flames in a matter of two or three minutes," said Steve Russell, who witnessed the fire and ran to the complex to warn residents. "I just started beating on doors saying, 'Everybody, fire! Fire, smoke, everybody out!'"

The fire caused $800,000 in damage to two three-story buildings and 22 units.

"The worst thing (about) this is it got a head start on us," said Claymont Fire Chief Ed Hassel. "It got up in the attic which causes us to really have to chase the fire."

Firefighters brought the flames under control. No one was injured. Officials continue to investigate the cause.

Displaced residents were allowed back into their apartments to gather their belongings but won't be able to stay. The Red Cross is currently assisting them.

Good Samaritans Save Man From Burning Vehicle

A man is in the hospital after a group of good Samaritans rescued him from a burning vehicle following a crash in Sicklerville, New Jersey, Friday night.

The victim was driving east on Erial Road at 6:50 p.m. when he lost control and left the roadway. The driver entered the Camden County Park Recreational Area and crashed into a large tree causing the vehicle to catch fire.

Mellina Santos told NBC10 she witnessed the crash and recognized the victim, Tyrone Gollopp, her neighbor and high school friend.

"I was scared," Santos said. "I'm like, 'I know him!' I automatically got goosebumps."

Gil Shaw says he was driving past the area when he saw the burning car as well as a group of people standing around watching.

"I saw people standing around but they were not approaching the car," Shaw said.

Shaw grabbed an ax from a neighbor and began hitting the door of the car with the flames only inches away from him.

"I just proceeded to get that door open," Shaw said. "Or to pry it open."

Two more good Samaritans joined him and one managed to rip out the car window. The three men then pulled Gollopp through the driver's side and took him to safety. The flames grew in intensity only moments later.

"Literally the same time they took him out the fumes came up," Santos said.

Responding crews put out the flames and transported Gollopp to the hospital where he is currently in critical but stable condition.

"It was just my duty to do what I could do," said Shaw, who is a former Boy Scout. "I was trained that way."

Santos told NBC10 she's happy Shaw and the other two men took action.

"Not everybody is going to be willing to risk their own life to save someone else," Santos said. "So, you know, God bless them as well."
