Prosecutors in South Jersey charged a teenage mother with strangling her infant daughter.

Jade Fanz, 19, killed her newborn “by applying pressure to the throat” until the baby died, said the Gloucester County Prosecutors Office.

The Franklin Township woman also tried to conceal the girl’s death by hiding the body on her family’s Prospect Avenue property, said prosecutors. The body was found on Feb. 27.

Fanz was sent to county jail on $250,000 bail as she awaits murder and related charges.

Police Shoot Dog as Wanted Man Runs Off in Underwear

A suspect made his escape in only his underwear and Philadelphia Police shot a dog while helping serve a warrant Friday morning.

Officers were assisting the First Judicial Court’s Warrant Unit to serve the warrant at a home along Weikel Street near Ann Street in the city’s Port Richmond section around 5:45 a.m.

Officers waited to enter the home after a resident agreed to move several pit bulls from inside the home to the backyard, said Philadelphia Police Captain Nicholas Brown.

Once officer entered the home, the suspect – wanted for failure to appear on felony drug charges – made a dash for it, leaving the back door open and allowing the dogs to come back inside, said Brown.

“Once the dogs were in they began to charge at officers,” said Brown. “One officer fired his service pistol three times, striking the dog.”

Animal control officers took in the dog and treated it for gunshot wounds.

The suspect ran off eastbound down Clearfield Street in only his underwear, not even shoes.

“Just his boxers,” said Brown.

Investigators had yet to capture the man later Friday morning.

Investigators didn’t believe that the dog’s owner had intended for the dogs to come back into the home, said Brown.

#BYOCUPDAY for Slurpee's 50th Birthday

What better way to celebrate the start of spring than with a sweet treat?

Dairy Queen, Rita's Italian Ice, 7-Eleven and Ben & Jerry's are ushering in the warmer weather with free or discounted goodies.

If you're craving a Slurpee, look no further than the nearest 7-Eleven, which is honoring the frozen drink's 50th birthday Friday by filling customers' cups for just $1.50.

But don't get any crazy ideas about the kind of container you can bring. Cups used on #BYOCUPDAY must be clean, leak-free and be able to fit through a 10-inch hole, according to 7-Eleven.

That means no trash bags, kiddie pools or portable kitchen sinks. Appropriately sized fish bowls could work, though — "Just remove the fish first, okay?" 7-Eleven wrote on the #BYOCUPDAY website.

#BYOCUPDAY will last from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on March 18 and 19. More information and participating locations are listed online.

Rita's Italian Ice will mark the start of spring March 20 with its annual Italian ice giveaway, a tradition that has been going on for 24 years. Free Italian ice will be given away from noon to 9 p.m. on Sunday. Find your nearest location on Rita's website.

Also coming up is Ben & Jerry's annual Free Cone Day, the date of which has yet to be announced. In 2015, the giveaway fell on April 14.

Earlier this week, Dairy Queen dished out free cones for its annual #FreeConeDay, offering free vanilla soft-serve cone. The ice cream chain was accepting donations for kids at children's hospitals in lieu of payment.

Sheena's Blog: What's Up With Weekend Snow?

0
0

A cold air mass will move down from Canada for the weekend.  At the same time, a storm system approaches from the South.  Computer models seem to be having a better handle on this, and will continue to do so as the storm organizes more before it heads up the East coast.

More model updates throughout the weekend will give a clearer picture on the timing and precipitation type, as well as snow amounts (yes-we expect accumulating snow through part of the area).  As of now, snow could move in as early as Sunday morning for part of the area, and through the afternoon and night.

Timeline

Saturday: mostly sunny – partly cloudy. Highs around 47 degrees

Saturday night: Lows around freezing with the storm approaching

Sunday: could see snow by the morning, certainly by noon. Timing may change though as we get closer. Cold enough for all snow north and west, mix to snow in Philadelphia, then rain to snow or a mix in New Jersey and Delaware.

Sunday night: snow continuing, with a better chance for any precipitation to change to snow in New Jersey and Delaware. Tapering off overnight as of now. . . Temps below freezing overnight.

Monday morning: Icy spots on roads, some roads could still be snow-covered from Sunday night. Depending on the timing of the storm, some snow could still be falling early Monday morning. TBD.

How Much Could Fall?

Accumulations will be higher north and west maybe a few inches or more (as of now), with less as you go farther south and east because of higher rain chances and a mix. But of course if the timing changes, then that would directly impact snow totals. So this will have to be watched very closely.

Snow should melt at the start, but then as temperatures drop below freezing later Sunday night, snow will stick to roads. Expect more of a “wet” snow with higher water content.

A lunch truck overturned onto the roadway during a crash along Philadelphia's Kelly Drive midday Friday.

The lunch cart wound up on its side in the city-bound lanes of Kelly Drive between Strawberry Mansion Drive and Hunting Park Avenue in the city’s Fairmount Park section around 11:45 a.m.

No word yet on what caused the wreck that blocks all inbound lanes.

An unrelated crash slowed traffic along one of the Kelly Drive's alternate routes, the Schuylkill Expressway. Traffic slowed for miles in both directions on I-76 due to a crash involving a big rig and two cars in the eastbound lanes near the Conshohocken Curve.

Police reported no serious injuries in either crash.

Tri-Union Seafoods is recalling 107,280 cans of its Chicken of the Sea tuna over concerns that the fish may be spoiled.

The company is recalling 2,745 cases in total.

There are concerns that the tuna may be undercooked due to an equipment malfunction that was uncovered during an inspection.

Undercooked tuna can lead to spoilage, which could cause life-threatening illness if the product is consumed, the company said. The recall is voluntary and there have been no reported illnesses in connection with the affected tuna cans, according to the company.

The specific product being recalled is Chicken of the Sea’s 5oz cans of Chunk Light Tuna in Oil and 5oz cans of Chunk Light Tuna in Water.

The cans of tuna in oil have a UPC code of 0 4800000195 5 and were sold between Feb. 10 and March 16 of this year.

The cans of tuna in water have a UPC code of 0 4800000245 7 and were sold between Feb. 18 and March 16 of this year.

Earlier this week, Bumble Bee Foods recalled some of its canned tuna over possible contamination that could lead to life-threatening illness.

A high school teacher is facing child sex charges after authorities say they caught him in an online sting.

Delaware's Department of Justice said in a statement Friday that Joshua Rutherford of Camden-Wyoming began an online chat with an undercover investigator in February, thinking he was communicating with a teenage girl. Officials say Rutherford expressed his interest in meeting for sex and also requested nude images.

Officials say Rutherford, a Smryna High School teacher, was arrested March 11 after arranging to meet the girl at a Dover park.

He was charged with sexual solicitation of a child and attempted dealing in child pornography. He's being held on $50,000 secured bail.

Authorities say additional charges are possible.

The school district superintendent did not immediately return a phone call and the school didn't have anything posted to its website by midday Friday.

Generation Addicted Gives In-Depth Look at the New War on Drugs

0
0

Watch Generation Addicted on NBC10 or right here at 7 p.m. Monday, March 21.

Amid the most widespread and deadly drug epidemic ever to sweep the United States, the long-fought “War on Drugs” is transforming into a war on addiction -- and NBC10 has spent the last five months on the front lines getting in-depth look at this crisis affecting every community across the Delaware Valley.

Monday night, tune in to NBC10 at 7 p.m. for Generation Addicted, a raw and emotional look at the young lives and families being torn apart by the heroin and opioid epidemic. The half-hour exclusive special report, supported by Mirmont Treatment Center, is the culmination of five months of reporting by Vince Lattanzio, Denise Nakano and Morgan Zalot. It will be complemented by an extensive multimedia presentation that will appear on NBC10.com. Robust social content will also be presented on NBC10's social platforms including facebook, twitter and instagram. Social content will include a personal facebook LIVE with Vince Lattanzio following the airing of Generation Addicted on Monday evening.

Generation Addicted will transport viewers into the tragic world of heroin and opiate addiction, placing them side-by-side with young people battling addiction, parents fighting to save their kids, police and policymakers searching for solutions, and doctors racing to save lives.

“The reason we’re doing [this story] is to fulfill a commitment and viewer responsibility to raise awareness about an epidemic that is impacting individuals and families across the tri-state,” NBC10 President and General Manager Ric Harris said. “It’s important to us to help our viewers understand the impact of this epidemic and what they can do to help themselves and their neighbors.”

The in-depth, multi-platform exclusive is the second of its kind launched by NBC10, after Faces of Homeless Youth last year provided a look at homelessness among teenagers and young adults in Philadelphia. Faces of Homeless Youth inspired tens of thousands of dollars in donations and hours of volunteer work at Covenant House Pennsylvania, a crisis shelter for young adults, and played a role in U.S. Sen. Bob Casey (D-Pa.) calling on Congress to approve $42.5 million in new funding for youth homelessness.

NBC10 Digital exclusives like Generation Addicted align with the station’s larger mission to serve the community by keeping viewers informed about issues that influence their lives.

“It’s a great example of our commitment to telling stories across multiple platforms in order to reach and engage the people most affected,” Harris said.

In Generation Addicted, viewers will meet Michael Miller, a 22-year-old who graduated from Philadelphia’s prestigious Central High School with honors and began pursuing a degree in engineering at Drexel University, only to find himself hooked on pain pills -- and later, heroin -- his life and dreams derailed. They’ll hear the heartbreaking story of Patty DiRenzo, who fought tirelessly to save her son, Sal, from the grips of heroin, but lost him in the end. There are also stories of hope: of Carol Rostucher, who has made it her life’s mission to help addicted people since her son beat his own addiction, and of scores of law-enforcement officers who are shifting their strategy around addiction from handcuffs to humanity by offering people help instead of punishment.

Those are just a few of nearly 80 people in 18 cities large and small across 4 states and the District of Columbia, with whom NBC10’s team spent months with to tell the story of addiction in the most meaningful way possible.

Along with the special report, NBC10 will provide viewers a platform to chime in and share their own stories of their struggles with and triumphs over addiction via the NBC10 app and on social media using the hashtag #AddictionIs.

NBC10 invites you to join us Monday, March 21 at 7 p.m. for Generation Addicted.

Immediately following the special, join Vince Lattanzio on NBC10's facebook page to continue to conversation and chat LIVE.

A man is dead after being gunned down in a barrage of bullets fired from a dirt bike rider along a Kensington street Friday evening, Philadelphia police said.

The shooting happened at 5:25 p.m. at the corner of A and Somerset streets.

The 22-year-old victim was standing outside the Uceta Mini Market II when the suspect rode up with another man on a red dirt bike.

Surveillance video obtained by NBC10 shows the victim walk toward the street, when the suspect points a gun and opens fire.

Bullets hit the victim at least once before he fell to the ground. The shooter then emptied handgun's clip into the victim as he lay face down on the sidewalk.

At least 12 rounds were emptied from the gun, police said.

The victim was hit twice in the chest and once in the stomach. Police scooped him into a cruiser and rushed him to nearby Temple University Hospital. He later died from his injuries, police said.

Neighbors said the man lived in the neighborhood and had young kids.

One man was tracked down and arrested shortly after the shooting. Police were still searching for another.

A motive for the shooting was not immediately known. Homicide detectives are investigating.
