Philly School District Looks to Hire Hundreds of New Teachers: The cash-strapped Philadelphia School District is looking to hire hundreds of teachers to make sure there's a teacher in every classroom this fall. The Philadelphia Inquirer reported the district wants principals to have their teaching staffs chosen by June 30 as part of a new early-hiring strategy that will bring in at least 800 new teachers into the district. A $2-a-pack cigarette tax that went into effect a little more than one year ago has given the district a cash infusion. Mayor Jim Kenney's proposed soda tax could also help increase school funds. District spokesman Fernando Gallard said officials want to prevent the problems that occurred last fall when nearly 200 teaching positions were left vacant in October. Many remain empty. The district said it wants to have 5,000 applications so it can choose teachers from the best candidates. The district is seeking specifically teachers with experience teaching "upper elementary (grades 4-8), secondary math and science (grades 5-12), special education, art, music, foreign language, bilingual education and dual certifications in math, science, and special education."

Pa. Turnpike Speed Limit to Increase: The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission has approved an increase in the speed limit from 65 mph to 70 mph along most of the toll road. The commission vote Tuesday followed an 18-month study of the increase, which is expected to go into effect in the spring. The maximum speed in areas that have a 65 mph limit now will become 70 mph. Areas posted at 55 mph will remain the same. Turnpike spokesman Carl DeFebo says the two speed limits will allow for more consistency for drivers. A test on a 100-mile stretch between Morgantown and Blue Mountain found that there wasn't a noticeable increase in the actual average speed of vehicles, and there was a decrease in traffic accidents despite an increase in traffic.

Egypt Says King Tut's Tomb Shows Hidden Rooms: Egyptian Antiquities Minister Mamdouh el-Damaty says analysis of scans of famed King Tut's burial chamber has revealed two hidden rooms that could contain metal or organic material. In a news conference Thursday in Cairo, he says that the Japanese analysis showed chambers that would be scanned again at the end of the month. The discovery could shine new light on one of ancient Egypt's most turbulent times, and one prominent researcher has theorized that the remains of Queen Nefertiti might be inside. El-Damaty said he thinks the new chambers could contain the tomb of a member of Tutankhmun's family, but wouldn't speculate on Nefertiti — who was one of the wives of Tutankhmun's father, the Pharoah Akhenaten, but is not believed to be his mother.

Ohio Man Egged Elderly Man's House 100 Times: An Ohio man faces a felony charge after he egged an elderly man’s house more than 100 times, police said. Jason E. Kozan was arrested and charged with felony vandalism after a lengthy investigation by the Euclid Police Department. Albert Clemens, Sr. told Cleveland.com the eggings started March 2014 and haven’t stopped. "The accuracy is phenomenal," Clemens said. "Because almost every time when it's nice weather and they launch five or six of these at a time, they almost invariably hit the front door.” Clemens told the publication his home had been pelted several times a week in the past, sometimes more than once a day. The eggings usually happened after dark and lasted around 10 minutes. He also said he felt the eggs were somehow being launched at the house.

Amazon Files Patent So Users Can 'Pay by Selfie': The days of trying to remember your account password to make online purchases may well be a thing of the past, at least for Amazon customers. The online retailer has filed a patent to allow consumers to "pay by selfie.” The new user authentication payment process allows users to take a picture of themselves as proof of payment. But, it's slightly more complex than snap and spend. The process requires consumers to face a camera or sensor which can tell the user's identity and that he or she is alive. This prevents photos from being used to trick the system. Once the user is processed by the facial recognition system, "the device prompts the user to perform an action to confirm the transaction" such as blinking one eye. Amazon's interest in creating the software is namely for security purposes, with the company noting that "conventional approaches" that rely on passwords for authentication can be stolen and used by impersonators. Find out more about the patent here.

Philadelphia Police took a teenager into custody after a man was shot in the head while driving late Wednesday night.

The victim, who appears to be in his 20s, fought for his life in critical condition at Aria-Torresdale Hospital after being shot as he drove along Meridian Street near Torresdale Avenue in the city’s Holmesburg section around 9:30 p.m.

After being shot, the driver – who had no identification on him – crashed into some parked cars, said Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small.

“When police and medics arrived on location they found a Mercury Sable with a driver who appeared to be shot one time in his head,” said Small.

A witness told police he witnessed the shooting and saw the shooter run into the rear of a home along neighboring Lansing Street, said Small.

The shooting suspect is 17 years old, said Small. Investigators planned to search the home where the boy was found.

“It appears that the bullet entered the rear driver-side door window – breaking the window – then striking our victim in the head,” said Small.

Police recovered the bullet from the dashboard of the car that wound up crashed into two cars.

Fire Ignites After Truck Slams Into Firefighter's Living Room

A pickup truck slammed into a South Jersey home early Thursday morning, igniting a fire that destroyed the house of a firefighter.

A driver lost control around 4:30 a.m. after colliding with another car and crashed his white pickup truck into a home along normally busy N Hook Road near Dunlap Avenue in Pennsville, said Pennsville Police Chief AJ Cummings.

A firefighter and his wife were asleep in their longtime at the time and rushed out of their bedroom to find the pickup on fire in their living room. The driver had grabbed a garden hose and was trying to dose the flames but actually made the fire worse, said Cummings.

Luckily everyone in the home -- including pets -- and in the driver made it out safely and no injuries were reported, said investigators.

The home, however, continued to burn for hours. The homeowner said the truck likely hit a gas line, causing the destructive blaze.

Investigators administered a DWI test to the truck driver who said he swerved into the home to avoid crashing into a car with two women inside, said police. Police took the driver into custody despite the field sobriety test coming up negative. He likely faces numerous motor vehicle charges.
