Pistachio Recall Expands

A pistachio recall announced last week over salmonella concerns has been expanded to include six brands, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

Wonderful, Paramount Farms and Trader Joe's voluntarily recalled in-shell and shelled pistachios March 10 after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notified the companies of the possible contamination. The recalled pistachios, all produced by Wonderful Pistachios, have "best by" dates between Oct. 26 and Nov. 6.

The recall was expanded Monday to include Fresh Choice, Southern Grove and Nature's Eats pistachios produced by the Texas Star Nut & Food Company.

The pistachios in question were sold nationwide between Aug. 13, 2015, and Feb. 24, 2016, according to the FDA, which lists the affected products on its website.

Consumers should throw away affected pistachios and return the empty packages to the place of purchase for a refund.

Salmonella symptoms include fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.

Eleven people in nine states were infected with salmonella linked to nuts included in the original recall. Two were hospitalized, according to the CDC. No illnesses have been reported in connection with nuts produced by Texas Star Nut & Food Company, the FDA said.

Those with questions for The Wonderful Company can call 844-505-3844 any time. Consumers can reach the Texas Star Nut & Food Company at 844-571-5555 from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. CST.

Chester County Sees Increase in Number of Child Abuse Cases

The number of reported child abuse cases has risen significantly in Chester County over the past few years, and District Attorney Thomas P. Hogan says he knows why.

In 2012, there were 219 reported cases of child abuse. In 2013, the number rose to 291. In 2014, it rose again to 414. And in 2015, the number was a staggering 1,306 reported cases, according to the Chester County District Attorney's Office.

“The explosive growth in child abuse reports has been caused by three main factors,” Hogan said in a release. “First, after the conviction of Jerry Sandusky in the high-profile Penn State case, overall awareness and sensitivity to child abuse has increased. Second, changes to Pennsylvania law have expanded the types of incidents and categories of people that are required to report child abuse. Third, the District Attorney’s Office, with the support of the Chester County Commissioners, has increased the focus on child abuse, leading to more cases.”

Child abuse reports come from the Department of Public Welfare and the Department of Children, Youth, and Families. It is then reviewed by the Chester County District Attorney’s Office and handled by detectives or local law enforcement.

Hogan says with the increase in numbers, Chester County will need to devote more law enforcement resources to child abuse cases.

“This will require more investigators and prosecutors, but that is a small price to pay for the good of our children.”

Authorities say the driver remained at the scene after the accident occurred. A stretch of the roadway was closed while the accident was investigated, but no major travel delays were reported.

Business Owner Fed Up With Men Peeing on Her Building

Police and the Mayor of a Delaware town plan on helping a business owner who says she’s fed up with numerous people peeing on her building.

Angela Dorey owns Dorey Insurance in Milford, Delaware. Since she opened her business, which is located next to a liquor store and bar, Dorey says her surveillance video has constantly captured men peeing outside the building.

“It’s kind of gross and dirty and it smells,” Dorey said.

Despite a visible sign warning people not to do it and another sign which states they’ll be caught on camera if they do, Dorey says she often sees five to six people a day urinating outside her business.

“It’s not clean,” Dorey said. “It’s not fair to me or my staff or my customers.”

It’s gotten so bad that Milford Mayor Bryan Shupe and Milford Police are considering building public restrooms or even port-a-potties in the area.

“There are always little things on the street that we need to take care of,” Shupe said.

Dorey has taken action of her own. She publicly shames the culprits by posting surveillance videos of them peeing on social media. She told NBC10 some of the men have been recognized by their bosses and family members.

“I want these people who come back here to know that what they’re doing is not private,” she said. “It’s going to be publicized.”
