SEPTA Gets Rolling Again Along Paoli-Thorndale Line

The morning after hundreds of SEPTA commuters were stranded, signal problems persisted leading to the cancellation of a morning train Friday but SEPTA got things running again before the morning rush.

SEPTA suggested passengers use the Norristown High Speed Line as an alternate as they canceled the first Paoli-Thorndale train of the morning early Friday.

But, SEPTA alerted NBC10 traffic reporter Katy Zachry around 5:20 a.m. that service would resume on the line. SEPTA said the first inbound trains will depart Malvern at 5:44 a.m. and Thorndale at 5:50 a.m.

The earlier cancellation came as Amtrak crews -- Amtrak runs the tracks along the line -- worked to restore normal power to the line.

"I can't believe how incompetent they handled this, they should have a plan in place," stranded passenger Robert Zirkel told NBC10's Drew Smith Thursday night. "Whoever is in charge of the customer service should really be fired for tonight's events."

It all started around 5 p.m. Thursday near SEPTA's Ardmore Station. Officials said the stoppage was due to an Amtrak power issue. SEPTA officials said six trains with an estimated 500 passengers were stranded along the line when the problems began. This estimate didn't include passengers waiting for trains on the platform.

SEPTA planned to provide shuttle buses for outbound passengers from 30th Street Station but not for inbound service Friday as passengers would need to ride the NHSL to the 69th Street Terminal where they can pick up the Market-Frankford Subway to get downtown.

Commuters lined up at 30th Street Station awaiting buses to transit locations along the route. Buses finally arrived around 8:30 p.m., more than three hours after the problem began.

Chris McConathy told NBC10 he opted to call an Uber from the Radnor Station to take him home after he was delayed for hours. "SEPTA made no efforts to even refund people for the trip or anything," McConathy said he finally arrived home about 3 hours after his train should have arrived.

Officials said the Paoli-Thorndale line will remain suspended until further notice.

Philadelphia Police officers took a homeless man into custody Thursday morning, a day after they named the man seen in all black, including a unique hat, who they say shot a 19-year-old several times inside a Philadelphia fast-food eatery Sunday, police said.

Police say Ronald "Roland" Graham -- a man who wore a black trench coat, black pants, glasses and a black Fedora -- was eating inside the Church's Chicken restaurant at N Broad Street and Erie Avenue in North Philly around 5:25 p.m. Sunday when the 70-year-old suddenly became enraged, pulled out a gun and opened fire.

Police nabbed Graham -- who is homeless -- on a Route 23 SEPTA bus around 7:20 a.m. Thursday.

Three bullets struck a 19-year-old employee during the shooting leaving him in stable condition at Temple University Hospital.

Police said the teen had stepped in to try and calm an altercation between his brother -- who also works at the restaurant -- and the hat-wearing man. The man left the store before coming back moments later and opening fire.

After releasing video of the suspect, police learned of Graham's identity. Graham faces attempted homicide and related charges.

Crews investigated the parking lot of a Delaware County hospital after a body was found in a parked car.

Police could be seen responding to the lot at the Crozer-Chester Medical Center along Medical Center Boulevard in Upland Township, Pennsylvania where the woman's body was found around 7:30 a.m.

It turns out the woman was sleeping in a car outside the Chester city Salvation Army when the car's owner -- who let her stay in the car -- came out and found her not breathing, said Upland Police.

The car owner then drove the woman to the hospital where the woman was pronounced dead, said police.

Besides the woman's body, investigators found drug paraphernalia in the car.

No word yet on how the woman died.

Chester Police continued to investigate Friday.

Bus Driver Sends Child Porn, Claims Abuse: Prosecutors

A New Jersey man faces decades behind bars after being charged with sharing child porn that allegedly included at least one video of a child he claimed to have met on a school trip.

Christopher Walsh, 31, either sent or received nearly 1,600 files that contained images of child-sex abuse, said the United States Attorney for New Jersey Friday.

Walsh sent and received both still images and video of illicit sex acts with minors via an email account under the name "fatbusdriver0984" that was linked to subscriber "Chris Walsh," said investigators.

Walsh, who is from Yardville, works for Kensington Bus Company in Lebanon, New Jersey. The bus company told NBC10 they had just become aware of the allegations against Walsh and that they had no comment.

Walsh sent and received the images from June of 2014 to January of this year, according to a criminal complaint obtained by NBC10. In an email exchange, Walsh identified himself in an image depicting abuse on a prepubescent girl.

In other emails, Walsh said he likes “special kids,” drives buses and babysits at night and that “I’ve always liked them young,” read the criminal complaint.

Chris also mentioned wanting to “play” with children as young as 2 years old that he was babysitting and said he thought it would be “easy” to “play” with a 9-year-old girl “because she has down’s syndrome.”

He also used the email account to respond to confirm bus driving details and confirmed the email address for payroll purposes, said investigators.

Walsh faces three federal counts of distributing child porn because investigators found that the videos traveled across state lines, according to the criminal complaint. Each count carries a minimum sentence of five years and a maximum sentence of 20 years and a fine up to $250,000.

Walsh was set to be arraigned Friday.

How Would a Transit Strike Affect You?

Negotiations between New Jersey Transit and its rail workers unions continued Friday, nearing the Sunday deadline for a strike. In the meantime, NJ Transit was preparing for the worst and warning commuters of the impending traffic suspensions.

“As we said in great detail last week, a rail stoppage would have a severe impact on travel in the entire region, severely restraining capacity on both our public transportation system and our road network which limits our ability to accommodate every displaced rail customer,” said NJ TRANSIT Interim Executive Director Dennis Martin.

In case the strike does happen, here’s what you can expect.

The two route adjustments that will affect our area most are the Atlantic City Rail Line and the Northeast Corridor.

To accommodate the Atlantic City Rail Line, NJ Transit will enhance service on the 554 bus route. The route operates between Atlantic City and Lindenwold. At Lindenwold, riders can connect with PATCO services to Philadelphia, reported NBC New York. PATCO will honor Atlantic City Rail Line tickets.

For the Northeast Corridor, NJ Transit will enhance peak period service on some routes. Those include Northeast Corridor bus routes 108, 112, 115, and 129, NBC New York reports.

NJ Transit reminds riders that bus services “cannot replicate the railroad,” and that these adjustments can only accommodate up to about 38% of riders. That’s equal to about 40,000 seats out of a typical 160,000 seats used per day.

They are urging typical riders to carpool to work, or to work from home, if possible.

“If a rail stoppage occurs, NJ TRANSIT customers as well as people who normally drive to work should understand that this will not be a normal commute for anyone—particularly with the potential for more than 10,000 additional cars on the road per peak hour,” said Martin.

NJ Transit has set up a section of their website for the latest travel information.
