NJ Police Honor Officer Who Survived Ambush Shooting

New Jersey police departments honored a Philadelphia officer who survived an ambush attack earlier this year.

Philadelphia Police officer Jesse Hartnett received a large shadow box with every Gloucester County police department patch during a meeting Wednesday at PBA Local 122.

Mantua Police officials say the gift was a “show of support,” for Hartnett who is also an avid police patch collector. A few days after the shooting, police and citizens also began collecting department patches for Hartnett in order to lift his spirits.

Hartnett, 33, was hospitalized the night of Jan. 7 after 30-year-old Edward Archer shot him three times at point-blank range in an assassination attempt, according to police. Hartnett survived the shooting and even managed to shoot back at Archer, striking him, police said. After undergoing several surgeries to repair damage caused by three bullets that tore through his arm, Hartnett was released from the hospital on January 22.

Archer was arrested and charged with attempted murder, illegal-gun possession and related offenses. The gun he used, officials said, was a stolen police weapon.

A terror investigation was launched after Archer allegedly told officials he shot Hartnett in the name of Islam and pledged allegiance to ISIS. FBI officials later concluded however that Archer was not part of a terror cell and there were no indications that additional attacks were imminent.

A driver suspected of a wrong-way DUI made a dash for it after Delaware State Police say he struck a woman’s car Sunday evening.

Robert Addari was driving his For Fusion northbound in the grass median of Bay Road (State Route 1) near Mulberrie Point Road around 5:30 p.m. when he crossed into the southbound lanes, striking a Harrington woman’s Toyota Camry, said police.

The force of the crash caused damage to the left front bumper of the Camry and caused both cars to stop, said police.

The driver of the Camry was treated for non-life-threatening injuries at Kent General Hospital.

After the wreck, Addari ran into the field and got close to a wooded area where troopers caught up with the 50-year-old New Jersey man who resisted arrest, said investigators.

Troopers managed to get Addari in custody without him being injured, said police. He faces vehicular assault, DUI, resisting arrest, leaving the scene of a crash and related charges. Addari remained jailed awaiting arraignment overnight.

'Drywall' Truck Key in Violent Home Invasion Set-Up: Police

Welcoming a woman a man thought he could trust into his home led to a violent robbery with a baseball bat and now Philadelphia Police hope images of the suspects and a red pickup truck could help lead to justice.

Police released surveillance video Monday morning showing a pickup truck with "drywall" written across the tailgate that they believe is connected to Friday's early morning attack along the 1800 block of Cambria Street in the Kensington section of the city that left a man beaten, battered and robbed.

The 41-year-old victim was inside his home when a woman he thought he knew knocked on the door around 1:25 a.m. and asked to use the phone. She entered and left the door unlocked behind her, said police.

About one minute later, two men – one armed with a gun, the other a bat – entered the home through the unlocked door and began to attack him. As the victim struggled to grab the gun, he became aware that his friend was in on it, said police.

"To his surprise the female that he was with started scratching him in the face and that's when he realized that the female obviously had something to do with this," said Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small.

"It's pretty obvious that the female set up this 41-year-old-victim," said Small.

The attackers ransacked the home, turning over furniture, before getting away with cash from a water jar and a couple video game consoles, said investigators.

Surveillance video shows the two men walking toward the home before the heist then running away in opposite directions along Jasper Street following the attack.

Investigators asked anyone with information to contact police. Police urged anyone who spots the suspects or the truck to call 911.

Police Search for 2nd Driver in Deadly Street Racing Crash

After arresting a driver in a violent Northeast Philadelphia wreck that left three people dead in a ripped apart car, Philly Police released the photo of a second driver believed to be involved in the street racing crash.

Police said officers from the Accident Investigation District served a warrant at Christopher Bloomfield's Knorr Street home and arrested him without incident about 10:15 p.m. Saturday. Bloomfield, 20, is accused of driving a 2007 Acura at more than three times the speed limit on Sandmeyer Lane near Red Lion Road in Bustleton the night of July 29.

On Monday, police announced an arrest warrant for homicide by vehicle and related charges for Ryan Farrell of the 10000 block of Northeast Avenue. Investigators said that Farrell and Bloomfield were street racing at the time of the wreck.

Police said Bloomfield lost control well doing about 75 mph at a curve and slammed into a tree. Killed instantly were 17-year-old Sabrina Rhoads, 17-year-old Yvette Gonzalez and 20-year-old Felip Hernandez. Bagdon Arutyunov, 17, suffered severe head trauma in the crash but survived.

A judge arraigned Bloomfield on homicide by vehicle and related offenses and sent him to jail on $2 million bail.

Police released Farrell's photo in hopes that someone will recognize him and contact accident investigators at 215-685-3180 or call 911.

Family members of the victims have been pushing for an arrest for months after the crash. They told NBC10 they believe Bloomfield was reckless and should be held accountable.

"I think that this is what all the families have pushed for," said Kelly McDade, the aunt of one of the victims. "We just don't want our loved ones to be forgotten."

Permit Problems Cause Headaches for Homeowners

0
0

Some homeowners in Philadelphia are finding out their dream homes aren’t up to code, because proper permits were never pulled for renovation work.

Marquita Horton-Jackson and her husband Jamal believed their newly rehabilitated home was the perfect spot.

"(We) thought this was an investment, with using our moneys to purchase something we could live the rest of our lives in," Horton-Jackson said.

Just days after they moved in to the home, they noticed the deck was wobbly. Horton-Jackson contacted her home inspector, who reported the problem to the Philadelphia Department of Licenses and Inspections. That report triggered an L and I inspection, which found 9 violations. The city says the work was not up to code, and the builder never pulled permits.

The home inspector called Horton-Jackson with the news.

"He told me: not only was nothing done for the deck, there was nothing done for your whole house," Horton-Jackson said.

The Jackson family isn’t alone. Kyndall McElroy's Olney home had the same builder and similar problems. Her home has issues with duct work, a leaky skylight and the dish washer.

"Last year, we got a letter in the mail from L and I saying that he didn't get any of the permits," McElroy said.

City records show Ayhan Construction worked on five homes without pulling permits, but Karen Guss with L and I says it is possible there could be more homes.

Guss says the city ordered the owner of Ayhan construction, Selahatin Useinov to repair the homes. He didn't, so the city took action.

"His license has been suspended and that mean's he can no longer do this type of work in the city of Philadelphia," Guss said.

Guss says her department has no legal authority to force Useinov to pay for the repairs. It's now up to the homeowners to make the repairs, or pay fines if they don't. The department says the violations in this case aren’t serious enough to evict the owners, but that can happen.

The NBC10 Investigators found Useinov at his business address. When NBC10 investigative reporter Harry Hairston asked Useinov why he didn’t pull the permits, he said: “That's what I did, that's my mistake. I admit it. So stop it there now. Stop bothering me."

To prevent this from happening to you, before you buy or rent a home:

  • Do some background research. Check the address of the property on the Licenses and Inspections website. There, you can see if permits were pulled for any work done.
  • Ask for paperwork for past renovations to verify. Check for complaints with the Bureau of Consumer Protection and the Better Business Bureau.
  • If homeowners have a problem, they can also file a complaint with the Pennsylvania Bureau of Consumer Protection.

New Video of Suspects in Shooting of Cab Driver

Police released new surveillance video of two men and a woman who are wanted in connection to the shooting of a Philadelphia cab driver.

On Feb. 6 around 3:15 a.m., the three suspects were captured on surveillance video exiting the Broad Street subway at Tasker and Morris streets. Once they were outside, they waved down a taxi cab driven by 38-year-old Alex Destin, police said.

Destin told police he picked up the three suspects at the corner of Broad and Wharton streets. One man got in the front passenger seat while the second man and the woman sat in the back. They then asked him to take them to 28th and Tasker streets, according to investigators.

While he was driving them to their destination, two of the passengers pointed guns at Destin and demanded money, police said.

"The guy pointed a gun in my face, told me 'don't move' and he shot me," Destin said.

Destin told police both men fired a shot at him, striking him once in the right shoulder. Destin then sped off. Surveillance video from a nearby deli captured Destin's cab speeding through a stop sign at 24th and Morris moments before crashing into parked cars.

The suspect who was in the front passenger seat fled. Meanwhile, the man and woman in the back seat were trapped and kicked the doors and windows, screaming to be let out as Destin flagged down a police officer. Before the officer arrived however, an unidentified passerby opened the cab door, setting the second man and the woman free, according to police.

Bonnie, a local block captain whose car was struck by the cab, told NBC10 she confronted the second man and woman after they got out.

"The girl, she was trying to hide," Bonnie said. "The guy was like, 'yeah, he hit your car and he hit them on purpose.' And I was like, 'so where are you going? You're a witness.'"

Surveillance video from the deli also shows a man waiting on two others at Morris and 24th five minutes after the cab crashed and two minutes before police arrived at the scene. All three people in the surveillance video match the descriptions of the robbery suspects.

Destin, who has a wife and four children, was taken to Presbyterian Hospital where he was treated for his injuries. He was released from the hospital on Feb. 9 and went home to continue his recovery. He still had blood on his shoes, stitches above his eye and a bullet lodged in his arm at the time of his release.

"Thanks to God he's still alive," said Destin's sister-in-law Ginia. "But he's in pain but he's alive."

Police continue to search for all three suspects. The first suspect is described as a 20-year-old man with a medium build. He was last seen wearing a gray coat with a red shirt underneath, blue jeans and black and white sneakers. He was also carrying a backpack.

The second suspect is described as a thin, 20-year-old man standing between 5-foot-3 and 5-foot-5. He was last seen wearing a dark-colored hooded sweatshirt and black pants. He was also carrying a backpack.

The third suspect is described as a stocky, 20-year-old woman standing 5-foot-1 with long, wavy hair. She was last seen wearing a gray coat, dark-colored pants and dark-colored shoes. She was carrying a tote bag.

If you have any information on their whereabouts, please call Philadelphia Police or 911.
