Police Nab Man Wanted in Deadly High-Speed Crash

A man wanted for vehicular homicide in connection with a horrific Northeast Philadelphia car crash that killed two teenage girls and a man in July was arrested this weekend, police said.

Police said officers from the Accident Investigation District served a warrant at Christopher Bloomfield's home and arrested him without incident about 10:15 p.m. Saturday. Bloomfield, 20, is accused of driving a 2007 Acura at more than three times the speed limit on Sandmeyer Lane near Red Lion Road in Bustleton the night of July 29.

Police say Bloomfield, who they said may have been street racing another vehicle captured on surveillance cameras at the time, lost control of the car doing about 75 mph at a curve and slammed into a tree. Killed instantly were 17-year-old Sabrina Rhoads, 17-year-old Yvette Gonzalez and 20-year-old Felip Hernandez. Bagdon Arutyunov, 17, suffered severe head trauma in the crash but survived.

Police said Bloomfield will face charges of homicide by vehicle and related offenses.

Family members of the victims have been pushing for an arrest for months after the crash. They told NBC10 they believe Bloomfield was reckless and should be held accountable.

"I think that this is what all the families have pushed for," said Kelly McDade, the aunt of one of the victims. "We just don't want our loved ones to be forgotten."

Erin Gonzalez, the mother of Yvette, said the arrest was "bittersweet."

"It's what I've been waiting for," Gonzalez said. "But, I still don't have my daughter."

Police are investigating after windows were smashed on more than a dozen cars on a Northeast Philadelphia block overnight.

Residents of Tyson Avenue between Summerdale and Algon, in the Castor neighborhood, awoke Sunday morning to find shattered glass littering their street. The thieves, who broke into at least 17 vehicles on the block, smashed side windows and emptied out consoles in several cars, according to neighbors.

"Whatever they could reach for, they got," said Christina Costobile, one of the victims. "I guess they did it quick and just got out of here. I mean, you do it right in front of somebody's house? It don't make sense to me."

Hovlaine Marcellus told NBC10 the thieves didn't steal anything from her vehicle but they still damaged it.

"I have to fix the window," Marcellus said. "As a college student it takes out of my pocket and work and stuff like that. Some people don't care but you know, it is what it is."

People were outside on the block Sunday afternoon cleaning up broken glass left behind on the pavement and in their cars. Police were taking statements and investigating.

If you have any information on the thefts, please call Philadelphia Police.

Woman Dies in Fire as Husband Tries to Save Her

Friends and family are mourning a grandmother who died during a house fire in Boothwyn, Delaware County Sunday as her husband desperately tried to save her.

Officials say the woman was alone inside her home on Blueball and Malatesta avenues around 5:30 p.m. when the fire began.

Neighbors told NBC10 the woman's husband was close by and was frantically screaming her name as he tried to get inside and save her. He was burned however and was later taken to the Crozer-Chester Medical Center.

Between 75 to 100 firefighters arrived at the scene but they were unable to get inside the home in time.

"[There was] intensive heat on the first floor and you could feel the heat all the way across the street," said Upper Chichester Township Fire Chief Michael Byrne.

Officials say the woman was found dead on the second floor at the top of the stairs.

"It's very painful," said Ruth Moton, a neighbor of the victim. "Especially when just a half hour prior to that I saw her with her beautiful blonde hair out playing with her grandchild. Then to see her on a stretcher."

Neighbors told NBC10 the woman had lived in the home for about 20 years before Sunday's deadly fire.

"It's just really hard," said Patricia Davis, a family friend. "I've been knowing her for over 20 years. My son and her son are best friends and kind of inseparable."

This is the second tragedy the woman's family has dealt with in the past few years. Her daughter died two years ago, according to loved ones.

Officials continue to investigate the cause of the fire.

Church: Vandals Took Down 'Black Lives Matter' Signs

Members of a South Jersey church say vandals took down their “Black Lives Matter” signs for the second time in a month.

Police were called to the Unitarian Universalist Church along Kings Highway in Cherry Hill, New Jersey Sunday morning. An employee at the church noticed their “Black Lives Matter” signs outside were stolen and the frame that held them up was broken.

Church members say the incident was the second time this month the signs were vandalized.

“This is vicious,” a church member said. “This is angry. This is hate-filled. And that’s not what we are.”

The banner was first put up during Martin Luther King Jr. weekend in January. Members say the signs were meant to start a conversation and promote an open community discussion that the church is hosting on Feb. 25 titled “Black Lives Matter in South Jersey.”

Young Mom Beats Homelessness, Chases Dream of 'The Voice'

Even though Angela Johnson didn’t make it to the next round of auditions for NBC’s ‘The Voice’ on Sunday, she was still smiling.

“There’s always next season,” Angela, a young mom and college student, said after she auditioned in the Pennsylvania Convention Center, but learned she would not make it through to the next round.

Wise beyond her 18 years, Angela knows a thing or two about letting things roll off her back. The stint she spent homeless with her 4-year-old daughter after aging out of foster care last spring when she turned 18 taught her that.

She and her daughter, Nevaeh, were profiled as part of NBC10’s Faces of Homeless Youth, a digital-exclusive report published and aired last year that explored the issue of youth homelessness in Philadelphia. Angela and Nevaeh spent several months living at the Covenant House, Philadelphia’s only crisis shelter for 18- to 21-year-olds, until she got back on her feet and found an apartment in September.

Angela, who made it to the second round of American Idol over the summer when auditions where held in Philadelphia, has wanted to be a singer since she was a little girl and would use the table at her mother’s house as a stage. So when NBC’s ‘The Voice’ announced auditions in Philly for this weekend, she was eager to register for her shot at fame.

“It means the world to me,” the young woman told NBC10 as she waited in Hall G for her group to be called for their 30 seconds of face time with the judges. “I’ve always dreamed of becoming a singer, since I was young.”

Angela, who attends Cabrini College, sang “All I Ask” by Adele for her audition. A crowd of other ‘Voice’ hopefuls erupted into cheers and applause after she sang part of it, warming her voice up ahead of the audition.

The young woman could barely contain her excitement at the applause. And even though she didn’t make it through this time around, she said she’s going to keep working at her dream.

“I feel like this is where I belong,” she said. “I feel at home.”
