AROUND THE WORLD

Obama's Shortlist to Replace Scalia: Legal pundits and close followers of the Supreme Court have begun to speculate on whom President Barack Obama may nominate in the wake of Justice Antonin Scalia's death. After paying tribute to Scalia's life, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said on Facebook that the next president should be responsible for appointing a justice. Obama, however, announced that he would appoint Scalia's successor. "I plan to fulfill my constitutional responsibilities to nominate a successor in due time," Obama said Saturday. "There will be plenty of time for me to do so, and for the Senate to fulfill its responsibility to give that person a fair hearing and a timely vote. These are responsibilities that I take seriously, as should everyone. They're bigger than any one party. They are about our democracy."

Blood Boost to Premature Babies' IQ: Two blood-building drugs injected soon after birth may give tiny preemies a lasting long-term edge, boosting brain development and IQ by age 4, a first-of-its-kind study found. The study was small but the implications are big if larger, longer studies prove the drugs help even the playing field for these at-risk children, the researchers and other experts say. Babies who got the medicine scored much better by age 4 on measures of intelligence, language and memory than preemies who didn't get it. The medicine group's scores on an important behavior measure were just as good as a control group of 4-year-olds born on time at a normal weight.

A 20-year-old man faces murder charges for allegedly killing a New Jersey couple with an aluminum baseball bat.

Readington Township police arrested Ezra Simon-Daniels, whom they found covered in blood and sitting in a car parked outside a store in Whitehouse, investigators said Sunday. A distraught Simon-Daniels had called 911 to summon the officers to the location.

Earlier that morning, officers conducted a welfare check on an elderly couple at Simon-Daniel's residence in Branchburg Township. When no one answered knocks at the door, the officers entered and found the couple lying in bed, both bloodied about the head, investigators said.

A bloody baseball bat was found inside the house.

Simon-Daniels was subsequently charged with two counts of first-degree murder and ordered held on $2 million bail.

There was no indication he had obtained a lawyer who could comment on the charges.

The relationship between Simon-Daniels and the victims wasn't clear.

Crews and volunteers searched the water after crews recovered a pickup truck belonging to an missing Dover Air Force Base airman last seen on Super Bowl Sunday.

Senior airman Keifer Huhman, a member of the 436th Communications Squadron, failed to report for duty last Monday. After news of his disappearance surfaced, Dover Police learned that his 1997 Ford Ranger with Florida tags had been towed from the shoulder of the William Roth Jr. Bridge that spans that C&D Canal late Sunday night.

Huhman has last been seen leaving his home at the Blue Hen Apartments around 6 to 6:30 p.m., said police.

The U.S. Air Force sent out Huhman’s photo last week in hopes of finding the missing airman.

“The safety of Team Dover personnel is vitally important, and Dover Air Force Base considers itself a tight-knit family,” said the Air Force in a news release. “Base and local authorities are taking every possible step to locate Airman Huhman.”

The search continued as a missing person case as maritime units searched the water of the canal, said police.

Dover Police asked anyone with information on Huhman to call 302-736-7130.

Around 40,000 runners are expected to take part in the May 1 run from Olney to the Navy Yard that is dubbed the largest 10-miler in the country.

NBC10 and Telemundo 62 are official broadcast partners of the race. Fans can watch entire coverage on race day right here on NBC10 and runners can tune in leading up to the race for stories and tips about the race.

Several families were displaced by a 3-alarm fire at a Delaware apartment building.

The fire started Monday at 4:34 p.m. at an apartment building on Winterhaven Drive in Newark. A viewer sent NBC10 video showing flames and smoke rising from the complex.

Snow and freezing rain made it difficult for crews to battle the blaze. Firefighters eventually brought the flames under control around 6:30 p.m.

Officials say 30 occupants in the building were evacuated and three cats were rescued. No injuries were reported.

The Red Cross is currently assisting 12 families who were displaced by the blaze. The State Fire Marshal's Office is investigating the cause.

John Thomas Parker, 14, walked away from the Devereux Leo Kanner Learning Center in West Chester, Pennsylvania around 2:30 p.m. February 9 and hasn’t been seen since. The Learning Center is a facility for children with intellectual or developmental disabilities.

Parker was captured on surveillance video as he was leaving the facility. He was wearing a t-shirt, jeans and black sneakers. He was also carrying a bright green backpack. Police say Parker may have changed his clothing however to khaki pants and a black jacket. They also say he may no longer have on the green backpack.

Investigators determined Parker boarded a SEPTA train at the Exton Train Station around 3:30 p.m. on Feb. 9. The train was traveling toward Philadelphia. Parker had reportedly asked people at the station how to get to Washington, DC before he boarded the train, police said. Police also released surveillance images of Parker boarding the train.

Parker was also spotted leaving the train at 4:17 p.m. at 30th Street Station in Philadelphia that same day.

Parker's family members, who live in Washington, DC, were notified by officials.

Parker is described as a black teen standing 5-foot-7 and weighing 110 pounds. He also has tattoos on his left arm. If you have any information on his whereabouts, please call 610-692-5100.

Couple Pays $325K for License Plate Number

$

No one seemed to find it shocking when a Wilmington couple spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on a license plate number during an auction over the weekend. According to those who attended, it’s a “Delaware thing.”

The Wilmington couple paid $325,000 for Delaware license plate number 14 during the Emmert Auction Associates estate sale at the Rehoboth Beach firehouse Sunday afternoon. Yet while this may seem strange to outsiders, it made perfect sense to those living in Delaware, where low license plate numbers are viewed as valuable assets that can be transferred across generations.

“When you live in Delaware you understand it’s a prestigious thing attached to license plates,” said Jeremy Watkins of Wilmington. “Especially black license plates. Especially low number license plates. People like to flaunt their prestige however they can.”

The man who paid $325,000 for the number 14 tag Sunday told NBC10 he actually thought the price was a steal. He plans on placing it on his wife’s BMW SUV.

Only nine years ago, a Wilmington developer paid $675,000 for Delaware license plate number 6. Some Delaware residents believe the low license plate numbers are good investments that pay off if you keep the tag number long enough.

Asia Porter, another Delaware resident we spoke with, doesn’t believe it’s a worthy investment however.

“It’s not worth it,” Porter said. “There are so many more things you can do with that much money.”
