Skateboarders in Philadelphia are feeling the love from Love Park now that the mayor has temporarily lifted a ban on skating there until it closes for renovations.

Mayor Jim Kenney made the announcement Wednesday during a ground-breaking ceremony for the park and welcome center's nearly $20 million facelift.

The park is a skateboarding haven and Kenney urged skaters to take advantage of it until it closes on Feb. 15. He told skaters they are a "part of the fabric" of Love Park.

He says granite removed during the overhaul will be used in skate parks across the city.

Skater Luke Darigan tells The Philadelphia Inquirer he's taking time off work to make the most of the opportunity.

During the year-long renovation, Robert Indiana's iconic LOVE statue will be moved to City Hall's Dilworth Plaza.

A driver who witnessed a horrific hit-and-run crash that sent a mother and her two young children to the hospital released new dashcam video of the incident that he hopes will lead to an arrest.

On Feb. 2, shortly before 1 p.m., a Honda Accord struck a 30-year-old mom, her 5-year-old daughter and her 4-month-old son as they were walking across the intersection of Dickinson and Broad streets in South Philadelphia. The vehicle then sped away from the scene without stopping.

On Wednesday a driver who witnessed the crash sent NBC10 video of the hit-and-run taken from his windshield mounted camera. The man, who did not want to be identified, told NBC10 he’s been haunted by the video for more than a week but wanted to submit it in order to provide the public a closer view of the hit-and-run vehicle. The dashcam video shows the Honda crashing into all three victims and then speeding off. The witness told NBC10 he’s certain the hit-and-run driver was a woman and that she also ran a red light at the intersection before striking the family.

NBC10 also obtained surveillance video last week showing a different view of the hit-and-run. That video shows the 5-year-old girl flying 20 feet into the street after being struck by the car.

Christopher Tereo, who works near the scene of the crash, told NBC10 that he witnessed the aftermath.

"I actually heard the young girl screaming and crying," Tereo said. "I saw the mom. She was lying on the ground. She was unconscious and I saw them holding the baby. It was pretty disturbing."

The mom suffered head injuries, her 5-year-old daughter broke her leg and femur while the baby boy suffered scrapes to his head. They were all treated at area hospitals and later released.

The hit-and-run vehicle is described as a 2-door, cherry red 2001 Honda Accord with a Pennsylvania tag, damage to its hood and a missing passenger side mirror. If you have any information, please call 215-685-3180/81 or 911.

Ursinus College is mourning the loss of a beloved history professor.

Dr. Richard King, associate professor of history, passed away on Monday, February 8th after an illness, according to a statement on Ursinus's website

King was the first recipient of the H. Lloyd Jones Award for faculty mentoring, and is widely credited for helping multiple students win prestigious scholarships.

“If there was one thing I’m sure most students gained from their experiences with Dr. King it might not be Russian history but the passion and dedication that he brought to the school,” Christopher Goss, a Fulbright Fellow selected to teach in Turkey, said in the statement. “At the very least it was for me, and I’m deeply grateful to him for that.”

In a statement, Ross Doughty, professor of history, said King was an “easygoing guy but he cared immensely about the department.”

King was born in September of 1950. He earned his Ph.D at the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana, and his M.A. and B.A. degrees at Michigan State University. He has taught at various colleges and universities, including Middlebury College and Memphis State University.

A celebration of King’s life will be held on February 27th at 1 p.m. in Bomberger Hall at Ursinus College. A reception will follow in the Berman Museum of Art, also on Ursinus’s campus.

McCoy Appears in Public After Alleged Bar Fight

Former Philadelphia Eagles star LeSean "Shady" McCoy appeared in public for the first time since he was allegedly involved in a nightclub fight that injured two off-duty police officers.

McCoy was spotted with a group of people outside Misconduct Tavern on JFK Boulevard Wednesday night by a reporter with the Philly Influencer. The Philly Influencer writes that McCoy said, "I made a mistake," after he was questioned by their reporter. While those words can be heard in the video, it's unclear if McCoy was the one who said it.

McCoy, who currently plays for the Buffalo Bills, and former NFL running back Curtis Brinkley were allegedly involved in a brawl with two off-duty Philadelphia police officers at Recess Lounge on S 2nd Street around 2:45 a.m. Sunday, according to a police report obtained by NBC10. The Philadelphia District Attorney's Office is also investigating the incident. Sources told NBC10 that investigators expect to file charges against McCoy though it's unknown when that will happen.

In different videos posted to TMZ Sports and CrossingBroad.com you see what appears to be the rumble. The clearer TMZ video points out a man who looks like McCoy.

The person TMZ points to also appears to throw a punch before being dragged out of the melee.

The police report stated there was “a dispute over the purchase of champagne” between the men when “[Brinkley] grabbed the bottle.” That touched off an altercation between McCoy, Brinkley, Tamarcus Porter, Christopher Henderson and the two off-duty officers, according to the report.

Philadelphia police said one of the off-duty officers was punched, knocked to the ground, kicked and stomped on by all four of the suspects. He suffered a broken nose, broken ribs and other injuries. The second off-duty officer, who stepped in to break up the fight, suffered more serious injuries including broken ribs and a possible skull fracture, according to the report.

Philadelphia police said the investigation into the incident continued Tuesday and no arrests were made. Sources told NBC10 Monday night however that charges are expected to be filed against McCoy and the three other men.

The Buffalo Bills released a statement saying they are aware of the incident and are investigating. They declined further comment.

McCoy played six seasons in Philadelphia before being traded to Buffalo. Brinkley is a Philadelphia native and attended West Catholic High School. He played for the Chargers and Bears between 2009 and 2013.

Calls to representatives of McCoy were not returned.

Arrests of NJ Gang Members: Cops

Suspected members of the Grape Street Crips, a notorious street gang operating in Newark, were arrested Thursday morning as part of an effort to stem the spate of violence that has marred the New Jersey city in recent months.

FBI and DEA agents, Newark police, and officers from the Essex County Sheriff’s Department raided several locations and took suspected gang members into custody, including its reputed leader, officials said.

The gang is a subsect of a Los Angeles-based street gang of the same name.

Newark residents Corey Hamlet, 39, Sean Scott, 45, Keon Bethea, 33, and Jamil Harrison, 32, were charged with numerous crimes, including RICO conspiracy, use of firearms in crimes of violence, witness tampering, robbery and drug trafficking, authorities said.

The New Jersey Grape Street Crips is the local branch of a nationwide street gang founded in Los Angeles which engages in drug-trafficking and other crimes, law enforcement officials said. Officials say the gang controls much of the heroin trafficking in northern New Jersey.

In addition to the gang’s criminal activities, the gang’s rules say members must retaliate against anyone who cooperates with law enforcement, officials said. Gang members routinely engage in acts of intimidation and violence against witnesses, cooperators, and law enforcement officers, the officials said.

Nine months ago, more than 70 members of the Grape Street Crips, including the No. 2 and No. 3 highest ranking members, were arrested in New Jersey, U.S. Attorney Paul Fishman said.

"The people of Newark should not have to endure that kind of violence or the fear that it breeds," Fishman said in a statement.

Andrew Campi, acting director of the New Jersey FBI, said the bust brings Newark closer to "dismantling one of the most violent street gangs in this city."

The four defendants appeared in U.S. District Court in Newark Thursday afternoon and were being held without bail, according to the U.S. Attorney's office in Newark.
