Woman Assaults 3 Officers During Wild Bar Brawl

A raucous bar brawl in Northeast Philadelphia escalated to mayhem early Sunday morning when police say someone pulled out a gun and began firing, and a woman in the crowd assaulted three officers as they tried to break up the fight.

Two security guards at the Good Life Lounge, on Bustleton Avenue near Lott Street in Bustleton, called 9-1-1 shortly before 3 a.m. after a large fistfight involving several people broke out outside the bar, police said. The guards were on the phone with a dispatcher when gunfire rang out from the parking lot.

When police arrived, they were met with 50 to 75 people -- about 25 of whom were still fist-fighting -- in the parking lot of the lounge, according to authorities. As police tried to break up the brawl and disperse the crowd, one man became belligerent and began yelling at officers, according to police, telling them to "shoot me" and rushing at a lieutenant in a fighting stance.

When police used pepper spray to subdue that man, authorities said, a woman jumped into the fracas and punched a police officer in the head, a sergeant in the back and hit the lieutenant.

Both the woman and the man were arrested, along with a third man who refused to disperse when police ordered him to do so, according to Philadelphia Police Public Affairs.

The two men are expected to face charges of riot and disorderly conduct, and the woman is expected to face charges of assault on police, authorities said. The suspects have not yet been identified.

When the crowd finally broke up, police located 11 spent shell casings littered throughout the parking lot. No one was injured by gunfire, police said.

A duo of armed robbers burst into a Northeast Philadelphia auto-detailing shop posing as police officers and took off with more than $1,000 after tying up an employee.

Police said the bandits walked into DTMS Detailing on Geiger Road near Gantry in Bustleton, about 8 p.m. Saturday yelling "Cops!" The gunmen went to an employee's office on the second floor, where they forced him onto the ground at gunpoint. The robbers then zip-tied the victim's hands behind his back, sat him in a chair and demanded money and drugs, police said.

The suspects then took $1,200 out of the victim's wallet and asked him where the rest of the money was, telling him they were "going to get the warrant" before fleeing.

Police said the victim was able to break free quickly. He jumped out of a second-floor window and reached the parking lot just in time to see a dark-colored vehicle speed out of the lot and head east on Geiger Road.

The victim was not injured, and nothing in the shop was damaged.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Northeast Detectives at 215-686-3153.

NBC10's own Vai Sikahema was inducted into the Polynesian Football Hall of Fame over the weekend.

Sikahema was inducted alongside Troy Polamalu, Rockne Freitas, Charles Teetai Ane, Jr., and Al Lolotai during a ceremony in Oahu, Hawaii Saturday.

Sikahema played college football for Brigham Young University and was a member of their 1984 championship team.

He then became the first Tongan to play in the NFL, playing for the Arizona Cardinals, Green Bay Packers and Philadelphia Eagles.

Sikahema was a running back and kick returner for the Eagles and is ranked first among the NFL's all-time career leaders in number of punt returns and second in punt return yardage. He is also a two-time All-Pro and was twice named the NFL Alumni's Kick Returner of the Year.

Sikahema joined NBC10 in 1994 and served as our Sports Director. He now co-anchors NBC10 News Today weekday mornings.

As a native of Nuku’Alofa, Tonga, English is Sikahema’s second language. He lives in New Jersey with his wife, Keala. Together they serve in leadership positions in their church, are active in Boy Scouts of America and the United Way, and dedicate themselves to finding forever homes for at-risk children through adoption.

Sikahema says he is proud of the thousands of Polynesian players that have been on NFL rosters throughout the years, especially considering the remoteness of their ancestry.

“I'm extremely honored to be considered among the very best Polynesia has produced,” Sikahema said in an email. "Our warrior culture and heritage served me well in football and it does so now in retirement and living a contented life.”

Congratulations Vai!

A $20,000 reward is being offered for information leading to the arrest of a suspect who allegedly killed two men and critically injured a teenager during a triple shooting in North Philadelphia.

On January 3 around 5:45 p.m., police responded to a radio call on the 100 block of West Wishart Street for a report of a person with a gun. When they arrived they found Richard DaVilla, 47, and Raul Rodriguez, 21, on the ground. DaVilla had been shot in the right thigh and back while Rodriguez had been shot in the back of the head.

Police also found a 17-year-old boy inside a nearby home who had been shot in the face. All three victims were taken to Temple University Hospital. DaVilla was pronounced dead at 5:59 p.m. that same night while Rodriguez died from his injuries on January 6 at 11:30 a.m. The teenager remains in critical condition.

After over two weeks of investigating, police identified 19-year-old Ativa Jackson as a suspect in the shooting. A warrant was issued for his arrest on January 19.

Davilla’s sister Carmen Pagan told NBC10 her brother was an innocent bystander who was across the street from his home when the shooting occurred.

“My brother was a very humble guy,” she said. “He never got into problems with anybody. Out of all people we can’t understand something like that happening to him. He didn’t get into any trouble and he was always by himself.”

Pagan said the death has been especially difficult for her mother.

“He was her first-born of eight children,” Pagan said. “We’ve never had anything so tragic happen to our family. She’s heartbroken.”

The City of Philadelphia is offering a $20,000 reward for information leading to Jackson’s arrest and conviction. If you have any information, please call the Homicide Unit at 215-686-3334/3335 or call 911.

It was last year when DeAndre Bing texted his mother and asked if he could visit his friend in North Philadelphia. It would be the last time she ever heard from him.

“The last year has been horrible,” said Bing’s mother Tiffany Williams. “Horrible. I will never, ever get used to not having my son. He’s the only child, my only child. He was my best friend.”

On January 23, 2015, Bing, who was a 17-year-old Senior at Eastern University Academy Charter School and set to attend college later that year, was shot and killed in North Philadelphia.  On Sunday friends and family gathered at Lawncrest Park on Rising Sun Avenue for a candlelight vigil to celebrate his life and legacy.

“He would say, ‘Pop Pop you alright?’ And I would say, ‘Yeah, I’m doing good,’” said Bing’s grandfather. “I just miss him a whole lot.”

In a tribute to Bing on their website, the Academy described him as a talented hip hop artist and school leader with interests in music, business and entrepreneurship.

“Even though we lost him, our love for him runs deep,” said Omar Barlow, the CEO and Principal of Eastern University Academy.

Loved ones told NBC10 the purpose of Sunday’s event wasn’t to mourn Bing’s death but rather to shine a light on his life.

“I know he’s smiling down now,” Williams said. “He loves this. He loved to be around people laughing, joking. He loves this.”

Eastern University Academy Is establishing a scholarship in Bing’s memory.

Bing's murder remains unsolved. If you have any information, please call Philadelphia Police.
