Philadelphia drivers, here’s your chance to drive a small car with big history.

One of the famous Fiat 500Ls used by Pope Francis during his visit to Philadelphia will be auctioned to the public at the Philadelphia Auto Show Black Tie Tailgate at the Pennsylvania Convention Center on Jan. 29.

The auction will be hosted by Max Spann Real Estate & Auction Co. and will allow for both in-person and remote bidding, beginning at 9:00 p.m.

The “Pope Francis’ Philly Fiat” auction will benefit select ministries and missions of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia.

A second Fiat 500L used by Pope Francis will be on display to the public for the duration of the auto show, but the Archdiocese of Philadelphia may opt to auction the second Fiat during the Black Tie Tailgate.

"No other Auto Show in the U.S. has such a display and we are hopeful that this will drive even greater attendance in Philadelphia. An opportunity like this is truly once in a lifetime," David Kelleher, Chairman of the Philadelphia Auto Show, said in a statement.

Police K-9s Sweep Del. Schools After More Threats

A day after various schools in multiple states -- including four in Delaware -- were evacuated amid threats, two more First State schools went into lockdown after being threatened Wednesday.

Delaware State Police evacuated East Millsboro Elementary School on Iron Branch Road in Millsboro and Everett Meredith Middle School on Broad Street in Middletown after both schools received threats around 10 a.m., said police.

Police didn't immediately reveal details about the new threats. Four other Delaware schools and at least one Pennsylvania district joined a growing list of schools around the northeastern United States that dealt with threats Tuesday.

On Tuesday, police evacuated Long Neck Elementary School in Millsboro; Silverlake Elementary School in Middletown; and Woodbridge High School in Greenwood so that officers and K-9 units could investigate threats.

None of those searches turned anything up, said police.

Weekend Nor'easter Could Bring Top-5 Punch

0

Friday and Saturday’s storm could hit the Jersey Shore and Delaware Beaches especially hard – possibly winding up as one of the Top-5 coastal flooding events.

It was too soon midday Wednesday – with the storm out in the mountain west– to determine with certainty what the weekend storm will bring but the National Weather Service was confident the storm will occur but less confident in the details.

More than 48 hours before the winter storm was expected to strike, the weather service already warned of a “a high probability for moderate to major coastal flooding for the morning high tide cycles that include Delaware Bay and the Atlantic Coasts of New Jersey and Delaware.”

The storm could pack 60-mph wind gusts along the coast Saturday morning and the potential for rain, sleet and snow throughout the duration of the snow, said the weather service.

“Whenever we have a nor'easter, the chance of coastal flooding goes up,” said NBC10 First Alert Weather producer David Parkinson. “With this storm, we have not only a very strong nor'easter, but also a full moon, which means high tide will already be higher than usual.”

East facing beaches along the Jersey Shore and Delaware Bay facing areas in Kent and Sussex counties in Delaware should expect the potential for significant flooding, said the weather team. There could be a 3-foot storm surge along the Delaware Bay, said the weather service. Gusty winds could also produce snow drifts.

It was still too soon Wednesday to be certain about what will happen down the shore but the weather service said that planning should be put into place now for what could be a Top 5 coastal flood event dating back to the 1940s when the agency began keeping records.

SPCA Rescues Seven Street Dogs

Seven street dogs from Puerto Rico are getting a second chance at life thanks to a new partnership between two dedicated organizations.

The Pennsylvania Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) has teamed up with Sato Dream Home, an organization dedicated to rescuing and saving abused and abandoned dogs from Puerto Rico.

“The Pennsylvania SPCA has always been dedicated to utilizing all of our resources in order to save the lives of animals in need,” Jerry Buckley, PSPCA CEO, said.

The dogs arrived in Philadelphia Tuesday night and already have local sponsors. The dogs were then put into 14-day quarantine at the SPCA where they will not have any contact with other shelter animals. After all health checks are complete, the dogs will be available for adoption.

Sato, a Puerto Rican slang term, refers to a mixed-breed dog. Sato Dream Home rescues dogs from areas where they are frequently abandoned, including beaches where there is no food or fresh water. Spaying/neutering dogs is not a common practice in the area, leading to thousands of street dogs throughout Puerto Rico.

More Than a Foot of Snow Expected

0
0

The first major winter storm of the season could blanket parts of the area with more than a foot of snow and bring high winds and coastal flooding to the shore.

[[365987111, C]]

Right now, the latest NBC10 First Alert Weather forecasting computer models show the storm moving into the region late Friday and lasting through at least Saturday night. The brunt of the storm will come overnight Saturday. Snow should lighten up by Saturday afternoon.

Snow totals could vary between more than a foot to a few inches. Here's the breakdown about 48 hours away:

  • 14+ inches: Northern Delaware; Chester County; and part of Delaware County
  • 10+ inches: Philadelphia; Camden city; Trenton; upper Delaware County; lower Montgomery and Bucks counties; and Central Delaware
  • 8+ inches: Lehigh Valley; upper Bucks and Montgomery counties; and Gloucester, Camden, Burlington, Salem and Cumberland counties in South Jersey
  • 6+ inches: Jersey Shore (Significant coastal flooding expected); and Southern Delaware
  • 5+ inches: The Poconos

Timing

Friday

10 p.m. to 11 p.m. - Snow moves in to South Jersey and Delaware

Saturday

Midnight to 4 a.m. - Snow moves in to Philly and the North and West suburbs

4 a.m. to 8 a.m. - Widespread snow across the region

8 a.m. to 2 p.m. - Snow continues

2 p.m. to Saturday night - Snow tapers off

Flooding at the Shore

Besides the snow there is also a concern at the Jersey Shore due to the combination of a high tide, full moon, a wintry mix and onshore wind gusts of up to 60 mph.

High Tide Times for Jersey Shore and Coastal Delaware

Saturday: 6:30 a.m. to 8 a.m.

Saturday: 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Sunday: 7:15 a.m. to 8:45 a.m.

[[365885461, C]]

If you live at the Shore or have property there, you should be taking precautions now to minimize damage from coastal flooding. Delaware up to about Kitts Hummock could see flooding from the bay as well.

“What we do know, though, is that we will be impacted Friday night into Saturday as well as Saturday night,” said NBC10 First Alert Weather meteorologist Karen Thomas.

Other Things to Know

Wind is going to be a component to this storm. There’s a blizzard watch just one county over the Delaware/Maryland border.

Blizzards have defined wind, snow and visibility requirements we don’t quite think we’ll hit here. Nevertheless, we’re looking at sustained winds of 30-40 MPH with gusts to around 50.

That kind of wind could cause power outages, especially if there’s heavy wet snow. Even if we dodge the snow-to-rain changeover bullet, there will be several warmer hours during the storm where we could see gloppy, heavy big flake snow.

Toward the end of the storm, temps will fall again and snow will get lighter and fluffier. You’re going to want to get on that wet snow early before it gets buried and freezes solid. It will be much harder to shovel after that.

Once the snow moves out, wind will stick around while the region possibly digs out Sunday.

The lesson here … stay tuned and check in with the NBC10 First Alert Weather Team on air and on NBC10.com as the storm approaches.

Suspect in Threat Against Philly, NY Officers in Custody

A man accused of making a threat towards Philadelphia and New York police officers is now in custody.

The man, who has not yet been identified, turned himself in at a Bronx police precinct Wednesday afternoon and is being questioned by detectives, according to NBC4 New York.

Philadelphia Police Commissioner Richard Ross Jr. told NBC10 the New York Police Department received an anonymous tip Wednesday reporting the man planned on harming both NYPD and Philadelphia officers.

“As I understand it, NYPD relayed this info to us because they thought there was something to it or at least wanted to take the necessary precautions,” Ross said.

Sources told NBC4 that the suspect mentioned by the New York City tipster had pledged allegiance to ISIS. Both the NYPD and Philadelphia Police Department issued a safety alert as a precaution. The two departments and the FBI then launched an investigation.

“We do not know if this individual threat is credible but I know NYPD and other authorities are running on it as though it is,” Ross said.

The suspect in the threat had outstanding warrants for other crimes, according to NBC4. Ross also told NBC10 the suspect has a few addresses in Philadelphia.

The news comes nearly two weeks after a gunman ambushed Philadelphia Police Officer Jesse Hartnett, shooting him at point-blank range. The suspect in the shooting, 30-year-old Edward Archer, allegedly claimed he shot Hartnett in the name of Islam and pledged allegiance to ISIS. Police later received an anonymous tip claiming Archer was part of a group of four radicals in Philadelphia who planned on carrying out more attacks on officers.

FBI officials said last week however that their investigation concluded Archer was not part of a terror cell and there were no indications that additional attacks were imminent.

Ross did not reveal whether the man who was taken into custody Wednesday was connected at all to Archer or the previous threat against Philadelphia officers.

This story is developing. Check back for updates.

Kids Hurt in Police-Involved Crash

Two children were hurt after their mother crashed into a Philadelphia police captain's vehicle Wednesday night, according to officials.

The captain, who was on his way to a homicide in West Philadelphia, was driving an unmarked police vehicle on Georges Hill Drive when he was suddenly struck by a Chevy Lumina traveling south on Belmont Avenue, police said.

Officials say the captain's car nearly flipped from the impact.

The driver of the Lumina, a 28-year-old woman, did not have the right of way, according to police. Police also said her 9-year-old daughter and 2-year-old son were inside the Lumina and the crash caused the girl to go head first into the windshield.

Both children were taken to the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia where they are being treated for minor injuries. Police say the children were not in car seats and they are investigating whether or not they had seatbelts on.

Neither the mother nor the captain were seriously hurt in the crash.

The Philadelphia Police Department continues to investigate.

Man Kills Cousin During Dispute Over Home: Police

A man who was involved in a dispute with his cousin over ownership of a Philadelphia home shot and killed her Wednesday night, according to police.

Police say a 37-year-old woman went to a home on the 5400 block of Pearl Street around 5:50 p.m. The woman was involved in a dispute with her cousin, who had been living in the home for more than a year, after ownership switched from him to her, according to investigators. While her cousin was outside, the woman went inside the house, investigators said. She then grabbed a power drill and tried to seal the door shut in order to prevent her cousin from coming back inside, according to police.

The woman’s cousin then allegedly pulled out a gun and fired 12 shots, striking her in the head several times. The woman was taken to Penn Presbyterian Hospital where she was later pronounced dead.

The victim’s cousin was taken into custody and his weapon, which he had a license to carry, was recovered by police, officials said. Police have not yet released his identity or revealed the specific charges against him.

A Philadelphia Police captain who was responding to the shooting was struck by a vehicle with two children inside. Details on that story HERE.

New Reward in Killing of Dog-Walking West Philly Man

0
0

Additional reward money in the brutal slaying of a Philadelphia Parking Authority worker killed while walking his dogs in West Philadelphia last month is expected to be announced this week.

The City of Philadelphia is already offering a $20,000 reward for information helping track down the gunman who killed Mark Marshall, 24, as he walked his two Chihuahuas near 47th Street and Chester Avenue about 7:45 p.m. Dec. 16.

The Citizens Crime Commission and police sources confirmed that an additional reward is being added in an effort to help solve the case. The amount of the reward is expected to be announced at a news conference Thursday afternoon.

Investigators last week released a sketch of the shooter in hopes that someone would recognize the medium-built, bearded man in his late 20s to early 30s who stands between 5 feet 7 and 5 feet 10. He wore a light-colored hooded sweatshirt and orange wool cap.

Police said the gunman pulled up to where Marshall was walking at 47th and Chester in an older-model Dodge/Chrysler minivan and exited the passenger door. He then confronted Marshall, engaged in a verbal argument, followed him a block to 47th Street and Kingsessing Avenue, and shot him in the neck, back, arms and legs, according to police.

Marshall was taken to Penn Presbyterian Hospital, where he died a short time later.

Marshall lived in a home about a block away from where he was shot, police said.

The dogs were placed in the care of a neighbor.

Marshal spent five years with the PPA and was going through the process of entering the Philadelphia Police Academy with dreams of joining the mounted patrol.

"He always had an ambition to be someone important, somebody who gives back to the community," said Marshall's father Jonathan Cousins. "For somebody to do this to him, I want to know why. Turn yourself in, let's get some closure here. You really, really, really hurt our family."

Police recovered the minivan but are still searching for the suspect. Police asked anyone with information on the shooting or who recognize the gunman to call homicide detectives at 215-686-3334/35/36 and ask for Det. Gregory Santamala.
