A fire began in the kitchen of a Bucks County Chinese buffet then spread to a neighboring bridal shop overnight.

Flames broke out around 1:30 a.m. Monday inside the Hong Kong King Buffet at the Bucks Center strip mall at E Street Road and Bustleton Pike in Feasterville, Pennsylvania.

The blaze spread from the kitchen into the roof and caused some damage to the neighboring David’s Bridal store. No word yet on damage totals.

Luckily, no one was hurt, said David's Bridal in a statement to NBC10:

First and foremost we are very grateful that no employees, customers or other personnel associated with the shopping center, restaurant, store and emergency response teams were injured. We are currently working with officials on the scene to determine what happened and are assessing the damage to the store.

We understand that there is some concern with our customers regarding the status of their merchandise and scheduled appointments. We want to assure all customers that we will meet all order obligations that are due in the near future, and we will be reaching out to those customers within the next 24 hours with an update about their merchandise, orders and/or appointments.

In the meantime, we are directing all customers who want to visit David’s Bridal in the area to our nearby locations in Philadelphia and Plymouth Meeting, and the address to these stores, as well as other stores in the area, can be found at davidsbridal.com. David Bowie's Philly Connections

Singer David Bowie’s Philadelphia roots include two of his most famous albums that were both recorded in the region.

The legendary singer died Sunday after an 18-month battle with cancer, said a post on his Facebook page.

Bowie's career spanned five decades with hits like "Fame," "Modern Love," "Heroes" and "Let's Dance" as he popularized the “glam rock” movement in the 70s.

Bowie's first official live album, "David Live" was recorded in the summer of 1974, at the Tower Theater in Upper Darby during the initial leg of Bowie's U.S. "Diamond Dogs" tour.

Bowie then accumulated a series of musicians including R&B legend Luther Vandross later that year to record much of “Young Americans” at Sigma Sound Studios on N 12th Street in Philadelphia. Some of the reels from that recording session now belong to Drexel University.

The "Young Americans" album is widely considered to be one of Bowie’s finest.

Following the Philly recording sessions the second leg of his tour was renamed "Philly Dogs."

He would go on to play many concerts in Philly including shows at the Spectrum and on the Camden waterfront.

A motorist crashed through the front of a northern New Jersey convenience store Sunday, injuring two police officers who were inside, authorities said.

The crash occurred around 7:20 a.m. at a 7-Eleven store in Wallington.

The car, driven by 64-year-old Robert Devlin of Wallington, went about 15 feet into the store, Bergen County authorities said. Devlin then started to back his car out of the business but was soon stopped by the two officers.

Devlin was charged with driving while impaired and assault with an auto. It wasn't clear if he has retained an attorney who could comment on the charges.

The two officers were being treated at a hospital for injuries that were not considered life-threatening.

No other injuries were reported in the accident, and the store remained open for business.

AROUND THE WORLD

Mexico Formerly Extradites ‘El Chapo’ to the US: The Mexican government formally began the process of extraditing drug lord Joaquín "El Chapo" Guzmán to the United States, the attorney general's office said in a statement Sunday. Mexico resisted extraditing Guzmán — who is the head of the Sinaloa Cartel and is wanted on federal drug trafficking charges in San Diego; Brooklyn, New York; El Paso, Texas; Miami; and Chicago — after he was captured in 2014. But then came a stunning and embarrassing development last July: Using a mile-long tunnel and a motorbike, Guzmán escaped from Altiplano, the maximum-security prison where he was being held. It was the second prison break of his life.

TODAY'S TALKER

Gibson, Gervais Have Run-In At Globes: The last time Ricky Gervais hosted the Golden Globes, he offended a whole lot of people. But perhaps no dig was more discussed than his jokes about Mel Gibson. (In case your memory escapes you, let us leave you with this line: "I like a drink as much as the next man, unless the next man is Mel Gibson.”) So when it came time in Sunday's show to introduce the "Expendables 3" actor, the entire world braced for the inevitable awkward moment. And, ever the crowd-pleaser, Gervais took a few digs indeed. "A few years ago on this show, I made a joke about Mel Gibson getting a bit drunk and saying a few unsavory things," he began. "We have all done it. I wasn't judging him. But now I find myself in the awkward position of having to introduce him again.” Gervais mentioned that he put the blame on NBC for the slightly undesirable matchup, and then segued into yet another...dark joke. "Mel blames — we know who Mel blames," he said cheekily. But luckily for everyone bracing for a fight, Gibson took it all in good fun. He entered the stage giving a good-natured chuckle, and proceeded to play along with Gervais for a bit that can only be described as bizarre.

A LITTLE SWEETENER

Man Rescues Fisherman at Jersey Shore: A Pennsylvania man has been honored for saving the life of a fisherman who had been drowning in South Jersey. Jeff Idler tells the Press of Atlantic City that he was drinking coffee on July 17, 2015 when he heard screams coming from Cape May Point. Idler ran to the beach and saw a man trapped in a whirlpool about 100 yards offshore. Idler swam out to the fisherman, who was wearing heavy clothes and hip waders. He says he kept the man afloat for about three or four minutes until a firefighter and lifeguard lieutenant helped bring the man aboard a rowboat. The firefighter gave Idler the award at a Lobster House Restaurant Friday night. Find out more about the award here.

Corner Shop Owner Shoots, Kills Robber

A store owner shot and killed one of three men who tried to hold up a South Philadelphia corner shop Monday morning as the search for a suspect caused police to put two schools in lockdown.

A short time after the shooting at S 12th and Montrose streets in the Hawthorne section of the city, Philadelphia Police could be seen roping off the area around Miss Jessie’s Stop N Shop as Sky Force10 hovered overhead.

Police said three men tried to rob the store at gunpoint around 8:40 a.m. The store owner opened fire, striking one would-be robber in the head. Medics pronounced that robber dead at the scene, said investigators.

A 22-year-old man tried to flee the scene but was apprehended a short time later while the third would-be thief remained at large Monday morning, said police. The unaccounted for suspect could be hindered by an injury.

Investigators recovered two guns at the scene and waited for a warrant to search for more clues.

No word yet on possible charges.

The shooting caused police to lock down CAPA and the Academy at Palumbo, which are mere blocks from the store. The lockdown was lifted around 9:30 a.m., said the district.

Police Arrest Alleged Wawa Carjacker

Police arrested a man accused of trying to carjack drivers at a Bucks County Wawa in two separate incidents.

Amir Saunders, 22, is charged with kidnapping, robbery of a motor vehicle and other related offenses.

Police say Saunders, who is homeless, tried to carjack a woman after she fueled up at a Bucks County Wawa Sunday night.

The caught-on-camera incident played out at the convenience store on Route 1 near Benjamin Rush State Park in Feasterville-Trevose, Pennsylvania around 6:20 p.m.

Saunders could be seen lurking around the gas pumps before he forced his way into a woman’s car, put his hand over her mouth and told her to keep quiet as he tried to get behind the wheel, said Bensalem Township Police.

The victim fought back and sounded her horn causing Saunders to run off into the Neshaminy Interplex commercial park as multiple witnesses tried to chase him down, said investigators.

Investigators also believe Saunders carjacked a male victim at the same Wawa back on Dec. 30 and then forced him at knifepoint to drive to various ATMs in Philly where he made him take out cash.

Saunders was arraigned and sent to the Bucks County Correctional Facility in lieu of $750,000 bail, 10%.

Police Pair Up to Do Job, Protect Public: Commissioner

$

Amid a threat of further violence targeting officers, Philadelphia Police are pairing up as they work to keep doing their job in the wake of last week's ambush on one of their own by a gunman claiming he did it "in the name of Islam."

"We still have a job to do, and that's to protect the public," said Police Commissioner Richard Ross as he arrived for work Monday morning.

Tensions in the police department have run high in the days since the attempted assassination of Officer Jesse Hartnett by a man allegedly claiming allegiance to the Islamic State group, commonly known as ISIS.

According to a police report obtained by NBC10, an anonymous tipster told officers over the weekend that "the threat to police is not over" and that Edward Archer, 30, the man who shot Hartnett late Thursday is "part of a group that consists of three others." The tipster added that the alleged shooter "is not the most radical of the four." The report obtained Sunday goes on to say the tipster told police to "be careful.”

"Very concerned, we don't quite know what to make of it as of yet," said Ross of the anonymous tip. "So we're going to take every precaution necessary. There might not be anything to it, but we're not going to take any chances with that. We've got to protect our police officers. That's paramount."

In the wake of the Hartnett's shooting, police officers began patrolling in pairs. After this alleged threat, Ross said that practice would continue.

"As a result of the tip, we're going to extend it for a long as necessary," said Ross.

Ross stressed that the extra precaution was so that police could feel more comfortable while serving the public.

Archer was charged over the weekend with attempted murder and a slew of related offenses and stands accused of approaching Hartnett's patrol car at 60th and Spruce streets and opening fire at point-blank range.

The wounded officer, bleeding profusely from three gunshot wounds that ravaged his arm, managed to exit his patrol car and return fire, wounding Archer in the buttocks, police have said.

Ross said he is thankful to the woman who approached an officer on the street with the tip about the possible continued threat over the weekend.

"We'd be remiss if we didn't cover every base, but we're not ready to point the finger at this point," he said.

Police issued memos to all law-enforcement agencies to warn them to stay vigilant as the investigation into the threat continues. They also posted on Facebook that the FBI is investigating the tip as well.

The tipster also claimed Archer attended two West Philadelphia mosques. An administrator at one of the mosques told NBC10 he did not know the suspect. While the mosque is open to the public, members say any claim that Archer was possibly radicalized while attending is not true because they preach against extremism.

"It's very easy to point the finger and blame or to just throw an accusation around," the administrator said. "It's a different story altogether when you actually come in and listen to our sermons and listen to our lessons."

Hartnett, 33, a five-year veteran, remained hospitalized Monday.

"He sustained a significant injury to his arm," said Ross. "He has a long, long way to go."

Ross asked people to keep the officer in their prayers while he undergoes more surgery to repair nerve damage to his arm.

Investigators over the weekend said that so far, they had not found anything linking Archer to ISIS, despite Archer's alleged pledge to the group.

Police also said that recent trips Archer took to Egypt and Saudi Arabia have not been determined to be linked to any terrorist activity.

Officials said the gun Archer used was a stolen police weapon. The details surrounding the theft of the gun have not been made public.

Powerball Jackpot Soars to Record $1.4 Billion

$

0

The ever-increasing Powerball jackpot has accumulated an astounding $1.4 billion. According to lottery officials, it is the world's largest prize pot.

The cash value of the prize is $868 million before taxes, according to powerball.com and winners have 180 days from the drawing to claim their prize.

Since Nov. 4, the Powerball jackpot has ballooned from its starting point of $40 million. Most of the gains came after last Wednesday's drawing when no one matched all six Powerball numbers for the $500 million jackpot. The U.S. saw sales of $277 million on Friday alone for the next drawing on Saturday, which reached $900 million amid a frenzy of purchases. No one won the big prize in that drawing, causing the pot to roll over and surpass the $1 billion mark.

Officials with the Multi-State Lottery Association, which runs the Powerball game, hoped for such a large jackpot when they changed the odds of matching all the Powerball numbers from about one in 175 million to one in 292.2 million last fall. By making it harder to win a jackpot, the tougher odds made the ever-larger prizes inevitable.

Powerball is played in 44 states as well as the District of Columbia, U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico.

While that's the largest U.S. lottery jackpot ever, lotteries elsewhere in the world can be far bigger. Spain's massively popular Christmas lottery, known as "El Gordo," is ranked as the world's richest and last month showered 2.2 billion euros ($2.4 billion) across the country in millions of prizes.

As for the U.S., here's a look at the 10 previous highest jackpots and where the winners were from:

1. $656.0 million, Mega Millions, March 30, 2012 (3 tickets from Kansas, Illinois and Maryland)

2. $636 million, Mega Millions Dec 17, 2013, (2 tickets, from California and Georgia)

3. $590.5 million, Powerball, May 18, 2013 (1 ticket from Florida)

4. $587.5 million, Powerball, Nov. 28, 2012 (2 tickets from Arizona and Missouri)

5. $564.1 million, Powerball, Feb 11, 2015 - (3 tickets, from North Carolina, Puerto Rico and Texas)

6. $448.4 million, Powerball, Aug 7, 2013, (3 tickets, one from Minnesota and two from New Jersey)

7. $425.3 million, Powerball, Feb 19, 2014 - (1 ticket from California)

8. $414 million, Mega Millions, March 18, 2014, (2 tickets from Florida and Maryland)

9. $399.4 million, Powerball, Sept 18, 2013, (1 ticket from South Carolina)

10. $390.0 million, Mega Millions, March 6, 2007 (2 tickets from Georgia and New Jersey)

After Officer's Shooting, Community to Walk for Peace

$
0
0

As soon as a gunman out for blood zeroed in on Officer Jesse Hartnett on a West Philadelphia street corner Thursday night, pumping three bullets into the young policeman's arm in a brazen attempt to kill him, Rosalind Pichardo knew she couldn't just do nothing.

The news of the violence was all too familiar to Pichardo, 38, who just marked the fourth anniversary of the murder of her brother, Alexander Martinez, 23, who was shot to death during a robbery in North Philadelphia in January 2012. Martinez's killing remains unsolved.

So Pichardo planned a walk for peace to be held Tuesday night. She said the brutal assassination attempt on Hartnett made her want to bring the community together in a show of support for police.

"There has to be a point where we show our appreciation, that the community has their back," Pichardo, who runs an organization called Operation Save Our City and regularly holds walks and vigils against violence, said on Sunday.

"The response has been overwhelming," the woman added. "I've been getting a lot of reactions from the police districts ... and a lot of community leaders are also reaching out to me."

The walk begins Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at Broad Street and Girard Avenue and will run south to City Hall. Pichardo said she's not sure how many people will show up, but that the flier for the walk -- bearing the phrase #AllLivesMatter -- has been shared widely on social media.

"It's always an issue about 'Black Lives Matter,' 'Blue Lives Matter,'" Pichardo said. "To me, all lives matter, and at the end of the day when a black guy or a white guy or a Spanish guy is shot, who do they call? They call the police department. I know that we have our issues with some police officers, but just like civilians, not all police officers are bad. Not all civilians are bad ... we can't put them all in that category of being evil and abusive. Enough is enough. This officer was clearly fighting for his life.

"It's a police officer. Someone who's here to protect and serve us," Pichardo continued. "If we don't stand up for them then who will?"

NJ Father Indicted in Murder of 3-Year-Old Son: DA

The father of a 3-year-old South Jersey boy who was found dead in the woods near the Cooper River three months ago has been indicted for murder.

DJ Creato, 22, was picked up Monday afternoon from his job in Washington Township. He was indicted by a grand jury on a charge of first-degree murder and second-degree endangering the welfare of a child in connection with the death of his son, Brendan, the Camden County Prosecutor's Office announced Monday.

Brendan was found dead the morning of Oct. 13 near the bank of the Cooper River in Haddon Township, about a half-mile from his father’s home. The toddler's body was discovered about three hours after Creato called 911 to report his son was missing, authorities said.

"Hi, I just woke up and my 3-year-old is missing," Creato said in a 911 call obtained by NBC10.

"You didn't hear anything or see anything?" the operator asked.

"No, I just woke up and he wasnt in my apartment," Creato replied. "I don't know if he wandered out or what happened. I don't know where he is. The door was locked. I guess he unlocked it and left."

Toward the end of the 911 call, a woman can be heard yelling "Brendan" several times.

Less than a month after the boy's death, Creato's lawyer, Richard Fuschino Jr., told NBC10 that toxicology tests on Brendan’s body had come back negative.

Officials also said there was no indication the boy was sexually assaulted and no indication of forced entry at Creato's home. They continued to investigate the child's cause of death.

In November, Philadelphia defense attorney Bill Brennan confirmed to NBC10 he was representing Brendan’s aunt and Creato’s sister, Sarah Jessica Creato, along with her parents. Brennan neither confirmed nor denied that his client was subpoenaed by a grand jury at the time.

"Grand jury proceedings are secret and it’s my practice, if there was a grand jury investigation, not to comment," he said.

While officials announced Creato's arrest Monday, they have not yet revealed Brendan's cause of death or a possible motive.

NBC10 was there as Creato was taken to Haddon Township Police headquarters in handcuffs Monday afternoon for processing. He is scheduled for an arraignment Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. in Camden.

NBC10 reached out to Fuschino Jr. for comment after Creato's arrest.

"I was shocked at what happened today," he said. "I had no warning that he was going to be charged today and it's heartbreaking. We don't know what actually caused the death here. We know my client is accused but we don't know what he's accused of having done."

PennDOT Selling Drivers' Info?

$

0

Since 2010, PennDOT has earned $157 million selling driver information to third parties. According to PennDOT there are 2,527 business accounts, 16,529 sub accounts, and seven wholesalers with 13,489 sub accounts – all with paid access to driver information. Those third parties, which include credit agencies and insurance companies, are supposed to only use the information only for background and credit checks.

The NBC 10 Investigators learned PennDOT has revoked five of the more than 32,000 accounts since 2009 for abuse.

“We would argue they have a huge stake to abide by the law and use these records for the cited purposes,” PennDOT spokesman Rich Kirkpatrick said.

The NBC 10 Investigators requested documentation showing how PennDOT monitors for abuse. The state agency responded in writing saying, “PennDOT does not have any draft audit reports, working papers or other responsive records in its possession, custody or contract at this juncture.”

Kirkpatrick said two audits are currently in progress, but didn't’t have a timetable for when they’d be complete.

He said PennDOT relies on consumers to come forward to report any possible abuses of their personal information.

“We’re not aware of any abuses,” Kirkpatrick said. “If we were action would be taken.”

34 state’s currently sell driver information. New Jersey’s Motor Vehicle Commission claims it’s earned $600 million in the last 15 years selling driver information. Delaware officials told the NBC 10 Investigators the state does not sell its driver’s information.

Both New Jersey and Pennsylvania officials say the money earned is used to upgrade roads and fix bridges.

Privacy advocates have argued as high as the Supreme Court that states cannot protect driver information once that information leaves state control.

“In order to drive, in order to register a car, we’re forced to give up this information,” Alan Butler of the Washington D.C. based Electronic Privacy Information Center said. “They’re really not doing the necessary diligence to make sure that’s what’s actually happening.”

Police Union Boss: Officer's Shooter is 'Urban Terrorist'

In response to criticism of comments made by Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney in the wake of last week's ambush and shooting of a Philadelphia Police officer by a gunman allegedly claiming he did it "in the name of Islam," the Philadelphia Fraternal Order of Police leader on Monday said regardless of the gunman's motive, he's a terrorist.

FOP Lodge 5 President John McNesby said that since Kenney's comment that the shooting of Officer Jesse Hartnett "had nothing to do with being a Muslim or following the Islamic faith" during a news conference about the shooting, the union has heard concerns and complaints from officers. Police have said that Edward Archer, the accused shooter, told investigators after the shooting that he did it "in the name of Islam."

"I saw the comments. I think that the guy, he made a statement that he did it for the Islamic faith ... you gotta take him at his true word, and until somebody tells us not to, he's a terrorist, as simple as that," McNesby said. "That's the way I'm telling our guys to handle it."

Kenney's comments also drew criticism from national media commentators.

"This guy was a terrorist, like it or not, whether he's associated with Islam, ISIS or a gang on the corner, he's an urban terrorist, and he tried to execute one of our officers," McNesby said. "We're lucky we're not planning a funeral."

McNesby said the FOP's main concern is Hartnett's recovery and the well-being of the officers on the street. He praised newly appointed Police Commissioner Richard Ross for his support of officers in the wake of the shooting and a subsequent continued threat of violence against city police that emerged via an anonymous tip over the weekend.

"Ross is doing an outstanding job making sure those troops are OK out there on the street," McNesby said.

McNesby said he's visited Hartnett, 33, a five-year veteran, a few times in the hospital, and that the officer is in good spirits despite serious injuries to his arm.

"He's surrounded by family, coworkers, and very happy that he's here with us today, and so are we, and we're looking forward to getting him through this long road of recovery," McNesby said.

"This guy wasn't just shot in the arm. His arm was shattered, blown to pieces here," McNesby added. "His arm was hanging by a string and he got out there, did what his training said, and he was in an ultimate battle with an urban terrorist, and he came out on top."
