Home Health Aide Accused of Assaulting Renowned ‘Louvre' Architect I.M. Pei

A home health care aide faces a felony charge of second-degree assault for allegedly attacking internationally-renowned architect I.M. Pei at his Manhattan home earlier this month, according to a criminal complaint.

The complaint alleges Eter Nikolaishvili grabbed Pei by the right forearm Dec. 13 and forcefully twisted his arm. Pei reported suffering large round red marks over most of his right forearm, as well as bruising and lacerations that were bleeding, according to the complaint.

He said he was in "substantial pain."

According to the Post, police said Nikolaishvili hurt Pei while trying to take a phone from him after the architect said he would call police on her for doing "something bad."

Justin Feinman, Nikolaishvili's attorney, told NBC 4 New York Pei was trying to go to the bathroom at 4 a.m. and slipped; he said his client grabbed Pei's arm to keep him from falling and prevented further injury.

"How that turned into she's abusing this person who I believe she worked for for a year and a half without incident I don't know," Feinman said. "It's alleged my client twisted the arm of this elderly gentleman and that just doesn't make any sense. It's not alleged that she hit him or beat him or that there was any type of financial gain. In fact, as a result of this incident she lost her job."

Feinman said he's confident Nikolaishvili will ultimately be "completely vindicated" of the charges. He said his office's investigation is ongoing.

Nikolaishvili was released on her own recognizance after her arrest and is due back in court in March.

Pei, who designed the Kennedy Library and the Louvre's glass pyramid, has earned extensive acclaim for his projects across the globe, including the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum and the Pritzker Prize, which is considered the Nobel Prize of architecture.

If you're planning on having a little too much to drink at your New Year's celebration Thursday night, Philadelphia Police have a warning for you: Stay off the road.

Roving DUI Enforcement Teams will be out in force throughout the city from 10 p.m. Thursday through 4 a.m. Friday, police said. The department didn't reveal locations the teams will be targeting, but said the officers will focus on "heavily traveled corridors and roadways that have displayed some incidents historically and throughout the year."

Roving DUI patrol teams will also be out in force on two major roadways that cut through Bucks and Montgomery counties.

Officials said 11 municipal police departments will join forces from 10 p.m. Thursday to 3 a.m. Friday to patrol stretches of Route 611 and Route 309.

The enforcement patrols are the second in a series of Bucks County traffic-enforcement initiatives undertaken by a county-wide task force. The task force is funded mostly by a federal traffic safety grant. The first enforcement blitz, on Thanksgiving Eve along Street Road, resulted in 10 arrests, according to authorities.

A Northeast Philadelphia gas station sold a winning Powerball ticket that will make its owner a millionaire in the New Year, officials announced Thursday.

The Sunoco on Cottman Avenue near Algon, in the Castor neighborhood, sold the winning Powerball ticket worth $1 million, for the Wednesday drawing. The winning ticket, officials said, matched all five white balls -- 12-36-38-54-61 -- but not the red Powerball (22). The Sunoco gets a $5,000 bonus for selling the winning ticket.

On Thursday, lottery officials said they were waiting for the winner of that prize and another $150,000 Power Play prize in Erie County to come forward.

Wednesday night's Powerball drawing ended 2015 on a high note for nearly 96,000 winners, officials said.

Cosby Attorney: Charges Are 'Political Football'

A day after Bill Cosby was charged with aggravated assault in Montgomery County, one of the comedian’s attorneys is claiming that the criminal charges are political.

“He's fulfilling a campaign promise,” Cosby attorney Monique Pressley said of the newly elected Montgomery County District Attorney on NBC’s Today show Thursday. “He’s not necessarily interested in affecting justice.”

Before Cosby was charged, he was the centerpiece of Montco DA-elect Kevin Steele’s campaign. Steele’s television ads and public statements were critical of his opponent for passing on the Cosby case.

One television ad described Steele’s opponent, Bruce Castor, as “a former DA who refused to prosecute Bill Cosby.”

The aggravated indecent assault charges filed against Cosby stem from an early 2004 incident, according to court records. The records say Cosby drugged and assaulted a Temple University employee in his Montgomery County home. The charges come months before the statute of limitations was set to expire in the case.

“The former DA said there was no need to go further and said it belonged in the civil courts, and now through a game of political football at which my client’s life is the center, we are back again,” Cosby’s attorney said on the Today show.

The Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office said no one was available Thursday to comment on allegations that the Cosby charges are political. At a news conference Wednesday, Steele said new information came to light in July when depositions in civil lawsuits against Cosby became public.

“A prosecutor's job is to follow the evidence wherever it takes us, and sometimes that means whenever it comes to light,” Steele said at Wednesday’s news conference. “I’m not going to look at the past or actions that weren’t taken at that point. It’s not a time to Monday morning quarterback.”

Cosby and his lawyers promise a vigorous defense and deny all claims against him. On the Today show, his attorney said they are not interested in a plea deal.

Beyond the pets PAWS saved, the organization said it also served its 100,000th animal since 2009 in 2015, aided more than 30,000 pets at its low-cost Spay/Neuter and Wellness Clinic, and performed more than 11,000 spay/neuter surgeries to reduce the number of homeless and unwanted pets entering shelters.

Two weeks after an armed robbery led to the lockdown of suburban Philadelphia high schools and a nearby college, police on the Main Line named a suspect.

Radnor Township Police identified robbery suspect Kenneth Jones as the gunman believed to be responsible for the Dec. 17 heist along Pine Tree Road that put Radnor Township High School and nearby Radnor Elementary School on lockdown.

Jones robbed two men working outside a property of a small amount of cash then fled the scene, said Radnor police.

Police said Jones, who appears to be from Philadelphia, should be considered armed and dangerous. He may also be responsible for a series of heists in Montgomery County including a convenience store robbery in Norristown and has a history of violence and drug offenses, said investigators.

Cabrini College, which is near the site of the armed robbery, urged students and staff to stay inside during the original manhunt for the robber.

Radnor Township posted a $7,500 reward for Jones' arrest and conviction. Anyone with information is asked to call 610-688-5603.

A 75-year-old woman shot in the face by a robber after leaving a Northeast Philadelphia supermarket Thursday morning walked home and put her groceries away before calling for help, according to police.

Police said the senior citizen was walking along Erdrick Street near Wellington, in Mayfair, on her way home from the ShopRite on Frankford Avenue just after 10 a.m. when she was accosted by the gunman, who shot her once in the cheek, stole her purse and took off in a silver vehicle.

In the woman's purse were a cellphone and $400 cash, police said.

Incredibly, after being shot, the victim managed to continue walking and make it back to her home about a block away, where she put away her groceries before calling for help, police said.

The woman was taken to Aria Health's Torresdale hospital, where she was in stable condition later Thursday morning. Police said she was alert and talking with detectives at the hospital.

Police continue to investigate the robbery and shooting. The gunman remains on the loose.

Anyone with information in the shooting should contact Northeast Detectives at 215-686-3153.

Mummers Parade: What to Know for 2016 Strut

$

The 116th Mummers Parade will make their annual strut down Broad Street on New Year’s Day meaning road closures and extra safety precautions in Center city and South Philadelphia.

The 2016 parade featuring fancy brigades, string bands, comics and, of course, wenches kicks off at 9 a.m. at City Hall then marches south on Broad Street to Washington Avenue wrapping up around 6 p.m. More than 10,000 men, women and children with participate with thousands more watching along the parade route, said organizers.

After marching down Broad Street -- for years the parade went up Broad Street -- the fancies will head to the Pennsylvania Convention Center while spectators and other Mummers head to S 2nd Street in South Philly for post-parade 2nd Street Strut festivities including more performances (at 2nd and Reed streets and 3rd and Ritner streets).

The weather is expected to be in the 40s with mostly sunny conditions. The Union League, 15th & JFK, Kimmel Center, Philadelphia High School for Creative & Performing Arts and plenty of other spots along S Broad will serve as perfect locations to see all the pageantry. The parade is free but some venues may charge to watch including bleachers seats in the Convention Center.

Broad Street will be closed until the parade wraps up after 6 p.m. Also expect road closures at the staging area along JFK Boulevard from 16th to 22nd Street, at Washington Avenue and along S 2nd Street.

Besides the traditional Mummers groups, this year’s parade will feature the more racially- and ethnically-diverse Philadelphia Division.

Expect to see police stationed along the parade route as authorities work to keep everyone safe.

With road closures in effect, SEPTA is a great alternative to get down to the parade. SEPTA will be operating buses, trains, trolleys and subways on a Sunday schedule.

Eagles to Make Another Hire: Source

On Wednesday, when Eagles owner Jeff Lurie spoke at his 22-minute press conference, it seemed like senior director of player personnel Tom Donahoe was here for the long haul.

That could still be true, but Donahoe could be joined by an outside presence in the near future.

A league source has told Comcast SportsNet's Derrick Gunn the Eagles will soon be making an additional hire to add to the player personnel department.

It is unknown whether the additional hire will work with Donahoe, answer to him or work above Donahoe in the front office.

Lurie, at Wednesday's press conference in the wake of firing Chip Kelly, said Howie Roseman will remain the vice president of football operations and would oversee all personnel matters. Less than a year ago, Roseman lost a battle for power against former head coach Kelly. Now, he seems to be in an even greater position of power.

During that press conference, Lurie said Donahoe's new position was "a crucial hire and a crucial position in terms of player personnel."

Lurie spoke of a collaboration between Roseman, Donahoe and whomever the team hires as its new head coach. Now, it appears the collaboration will be between Roseman, Donahoe and two people who aren't yet with the organization.

"A new head coach, an executive vice president of football operations and a player personnel head are all partners to collaborate," Lurie said.

The team will not use the term "general manager" going forward, based on what Lurie said. Instead, the power will be split.

All the people who will have the power, however, are still unknown.

Large Search Underway for Missing 5-Year-Old Autistic Boy

Police, community members and a private search group are looking for a 5-year-old boy with autism who went missing in Allentown, Pennsylvania, just before the new year struck.

Jayliel Vega Batista ran away from his family's New Year's Eve party in the area of S. Aubrey and E. South Streets at 11 p.m. Thursday, police and his family said. He was not wearing shoes, socks or a coat.

"He was playing downstairs with his toy like he was supposed to with all the other kids and then he left out of nowhere," Tayritza Molina, the boy's sister, said.

"I don't know what he's going through, I'm really scared," Molina said, fighting back tears.

Allentown Police Chief Keith Morris tells NBC10 the search area is expanding through the eastern Pennsylvania city's east side. Morris is asking residents in the area to check their backyards, sheds, bushes and any other potential hiding place.

Residents are being asked to not shout the boy's name because it may frighten him.

The private search group Wolfpack Search and Recovery is flying a drone over areas that are hard to check on foot. The boy's family asked them to join the search.

Police canines and helicopters are also trying to find Batista by searching through rail yards and the nearby Lehigh River. They're concerned about the boy braving the near-freezing temperatures without the proper clothing.

Police said the boy may run if approached so anyone who sees him is asked to call 911 immediately.

Morris said they will continue to search for the boy until he is found.
