Police have arrested a suspect wanted in connection with the thefts of several dozen industrial propane tanks from two locations in Northeast Philadelphia.

Police say their investigation led them to a lot on the 2600 block of Wheatsheaf Lane where they found two vehicles as well as several tanks. One suspect in the thefts is currently in custody. Police have not yet released his identity however.

Police say they have identified a second suspect in the thefts and are awaiting a search warrant.

The theft of the tanks, which happened earlier this month, sparked a counter-terrorism probe.

Police said 43 tanks were stolen December 16 and December 17 from Praxair at 2300 Church Street in Frankford and James Morrissey Inc. at 4720 Pennypack Street in the Holmesburg section of the city.

The surveillance video of the theft shows a man loading tanks of various sizes into a dark-colored minivan.

Twenty-four of the tanks are said to be the size and style used to fuel forklifts, sources said. Also taken were nine tanks that hold 100 pounds of fuel, four 50-pound tanks, four 33-pound tanks and two two-pound tanks, according to law-enforcement sources.

Family Searches for Missing Dog

Holly Walker’s family lost a beloved member over the summer when their beloved dogs got out of the house and ran down the street. One of the dogs, Tux, a border collie-lab mix, came home after a couple hours.

But their other dog, Kaos, a 4-year-old purebred English Lab, never showed up, devastating the entire family.

“It has (turned) our lives upside down,” Holly, a mother of two young boys, told NBC10.

Holly went out searching after the dogs ran off on August 31st,  but had no luck. She said she received a call from a neighbor down the street saying he had detained the dogs in another neighbor’s fenced-in yard, but a construction crew that was working in the yard opened the gate and let the dogs into another gated area so that they would not be in the way.

In a neighbor's surveillance video, Holly said Tux and Kaos could be seen entering the separate gated area, but apparenlty the dogs escaped because soon after that Tux returned home on his own accord. Kaos seemed to vanish without a trace. All of this happened in a matter of hours.

“I don’t know what happened to him, it could be many possibilities,” Holly said. “I just feel someone had to have taken him somewhere because I had such a big search group and we have continually searched for him.”

Holly says her entire family, including Tux, is devastated and just wants Kaos to come home. When she asked her sons to write letters to Santa for Christmas, both boys said all they wanted was Kaos back.

“We’re not going to give up because I know he is out there,” Holly said.

Kaos is a 4-year-old male English Lab. He weighs about 100 pounds and was last seen on Roberts Drive in Galena, Maryland on August 31. There is a $1,000 cash reward for Kaos’ return, no questions asked. If you have any information, please call Holly at 443-386-5936.

Eagles Release Head Coach Chip Kelly

The Chip Kelly Era in Philadelphia is over.

On Tuesday night, the Eagles dropped an atomic bomb of a news release at 7:12 p.m., announcing the team had fired its head coach and de facto general manager.

"I have made a decision to release Coach Chip Kelly this evening," Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie wrote in a released statement Tuesday. "I spent the last three seasons evaluating the many factors involved in our performance as a team. As I watched this season unfold, I determined that it was time to make a change."

Kelly amassed a 26-21 record in his time with the Eagles, but the Birds stumbled to a 6-9 record through the first 15 games of the 2015 season after coming into the year with sky-high expectations.

“We appreciate all the contributions that Chip Kelly made and wish him every success going forward,” Lurie said in a brief statement from the team.

In addition to firing Kelly, the Eagles have also fired vice president of player personnel Ed Marynowitz. Tom Donahoe, who has been a senior advisor for the Eagles since 2012, will take over as senior director of player personnel. Donahoe was once the GM in Buffalo and was director of football operations for the Steelers.

Offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur has been named the interim head coach and will lead the team against the Giants in the season finale on Sunday.

"I am determined and excited to select a new coach to help us obtain our ultimate goal," Lurie wrote. "Thank you for your consistent and enthusiastic support. It is always appreciated."

Lurie, who waited 14 years before firing Andy Reid, will hold a news conference on Wednesday at noon at the NovaCare Complex to explain why he fired Kelly before his third season ended.

The only thing more shocking than the Eagles firing Kelly is the timing of the move, with one game left in the 2015 season.

In January, it appeared Kelly had won a power struggle with former general manager Howie Roseman when Lurie gave him full control of player personnel. Kelly made major moves this offseason, which led to poor results on the field. Now, Lurie has pulled the plug on the entire operation.

The Eagles will have a coaching search for the second time in four years.

A group of gunmen executed a man just feet from his Philadelphia home overnight.

Around 11:45 p.m. Tuesday, officers arrived to 8th and Ontario streets to find an unconscious man suffering from gunshot wounds. Officers scooped him up and took him to Temple University Hospital where he died a short time later, said Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small.

Surveillance video shows four gunman approaching the yet-to-be-identified victim, said Small.

"It appears that all four fire shots from point blank range at the 25-year-old victim," said Small. "The victim collapse on the sidewalk."

The shooters all then jumped into a white minivan that sped off down 8th Street, said Small.

The victim lived just several houses away from where he was shot and investigators believe he was targeted "execution style," said Small.

No word yet on a motive.

Anyone with information on the shooting is asked to contact Philadelphia Police.

A Timeline of the Case Against Bill Cosby

$
0
0

The criminal charge brought against TV star Bill Cosby Wednesday arose from an alleged sexual assault nearly 12 years in the Philadelphia suburb of Chelthenham Township -- though authorities did not identify the victim by name. Andrea Constand was then director of operations for the women’s basketball team at Temple University, of which Cosby was a trustee and an alumnus. Now a 42-year-old message therapist in Canada, Constand says the attack occurred while she was visiting the TV star at his home seeking career advice. Cosby has denied the accusation.

Here is a timeline of the case:

Mid-January to mid-February 2004: Constand is allegedly sexually assaulted by Cosby after he gave her pills that left her semi-conscious. Cosby said in a later deposition that she did not stop him. A police complaint against Cosby gives a range of dates for the alleged assault though other legal papers specify January.

Jan. 13, 2005: Constand reports the alleged assault to police in Ontario.

Feb. 17, 2005: Then Montgomery County District Attorney Bruce L. Castor Jr. announces he will not charge Cosby. Earlier he had said that the victim’s delay in reporting the alleged assault had hurt any case.

March 8, 2005: Constand sues Cosby over allegations of sexual assault and defamation.

Sept. 27 and 28, 2005: Cosby is deposed in a civil lawsuit brought by Constand during which he acknowledges giving Quaaludes to young women he wanted to have sex with.

Nov. 8, 2006: Constand settles a civil lawsuit she had brought against the comic on confidential terms.

July 6, 2015: Cosby’s testimony from Constand’s civil lawsuit is unsealed after which prosecutors in Pennsylvania reopen the case.

Oct. 26, 2015: Constand files a defamation lawsuit against Castor for comments he made during an unsuccessful bid to regain the district attorney’s job. Castor's opponent, Kevin Steele, accused him of not looking out for Cosby's alleged victims.

Dec. 30, 2015: Steele, the district attorney-elect, announces a felony charge of aggravated indecent assault against Cosby just before the statute of limitation runs out. It is the first criminal charge brought against Cosby after more than 40 women said he made unwanted sexual advances toward them. He has denied all allegations and has sued several accusers. Cosby was arraigned and released on $1 million bail.

Here Comes Winter: 'It's GO Time!'

Great Time for a “Seinfeld” Reference
Since I believe that practically anything in life can be explained using a “Seinfeld” reference, here is the way snow and cold lovers will feel when they see the new long-range forecasts. “IT’S GO TIME!”

(The expression is from the episode where Jerry accidently challenged senior citizen Izzy Mandelbaum to feats of strength. Izzy, played by Lloyd Bridges, would infer an unintended challenge and yell: “It’s GO TIME!”)

Why “Go Time” Now?
Even in this new era of extremes, December 2015 stands out. To break a monthly temperature record is significant enough, but it’s being broken by the greatest margin of any temperature record. If such a record is broken by ½ of a degree, that’s a big deal. This record will be broken by around SEVEN DEGREES!

You might remember the most recent super-mild December in 2011. That winter ended up with only 4 inches of snow. Half of the years on the list of Top 10 warm Decembers ended up with EIGHT inches or less. And the average was 11.7 inches (about half of “normal”). So, there obviously needs to be a huuuuge change in the overall weather pattern to get to a cold and snowy period.

Here Comes the Change
I’ve been showing upper-air maps for a couple of months, illustrating the changes that would result in an extremely mild November and December. Here are examples from early November and early December. These maps show cold air in the West and warm air in the East. And if you trace the line from Philadelphia westward, you can see where our air would be coming from. In both cases it was from the Central Pacific Ocean, where it’s plenty mild.

Now look at the forecast maps for January 1st and January 13th:

Now some blue colors show up in the Eastern U.S. Those represent below normal pressures. Remember the “Polar Vortex”? It’s that circle north of the Great Lakes and it’s moving closer to us. Trace the air back from Philadelphia and we see our air will be coming from Central Canada in the first map and near the North Pole in the second. So, the Arctic air will have a clear path to us. The lines being so close together represent unusually strong winds-a strong Polar Jet Stream. And the top map shows what is known as the Subtropical Jet Stream coming from Northern Mexico to North Carolina. This is the branch that brings much of the moisture and helps develop big storms. It is also something that comes with any strong El Nino, let alone the strongest ever recorded like this year.

There are other signs of the types of blocking patterns that often lead to cold and snowy weeks, or even months, as we’ve seen in some recent winters. But this time, the Subtropical Jet is even stronger. Warmer air holds more moisture, so the super-warm Pacific and Atlantic can provide more “juice”. The “super Jet” and “extra juice” have already helped to bring:

  • record warmth in the Eastern U.S.-from Maine to Florida
  • record late start to snow season in Buffalo & other cities
  • record flooding on the Mississippi River
  • record snowfall in parts of New Mexico and West Texas
  • rare multi-day tornado outbreaks in the South

More Records to Come?
In the past decade, there have been many records set in Philadelphia for:

  • warmest months
  • warmest year
  • hottest summer
  • snowiest winters (#1 and #2)
  • wettest day
  • wettest months and several more…..

With a record El Nino to add to the already volatile mix, more extremes are likely around here this winter and spring.

And the “Disputed” Factor?
While the earth is just finishing the warmest year in recorded history, we need to remember that approximately 90% of the added heat has actually gone into the oceans. Is it a coincidence that the most dominant ocean/atmosphere phenomenon is at record levels? Look at the latest map of ocean temperatures compared to “normal” (anomalies):

That bright red band in the Pacific is the El Nino. But also look at how “red” the Gulf of Mexico and Western Atlantic are! And the rest of the Eastern Pacific is much warmer than normal, too. How can we scoff at the potential influence of the overall warming on so much extreme weather? Weather and climate are different things. But eventually, climate changes can and do lead to weather changes if they are strong or persistent enough.

The wild ride continues…….

A customer shot a car repairman dead in West Philadelphia Wednesday afternoon after an apparent dispute over repairs.

Police responded to Redfield Street near Girard Avenue, in the Carroll Park neighborhood, just after 2 p.m. for a shooting. There, they found a 57-year-old man suffering from a gunshot wound through his shoulder. He was taken to Presbyterian Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 2:28 p.m.

Police later said that the victim was repairing cars when he got into a tiff with a customer over a job. The customer pulled a gun, police said, and a struggle ensued, causing the gun to go off and fatally wound the victim.

Accusers, Community React to Cosby Sex-Assault Charges

An attorney for Andrea Constand, who accused Cosby of the 2004 sex assault that has become the first case to result in criminal charges against Bill Cosby, praised prosecutors Wednesday for the decision to charge the comedian.

"She feels that they believe her, and to any victim, that is foremost in your mind: 'Are people going to believe me?'" Dolores Troiani said on behalf of Constand on Wednesday, after news of Cosby's aggravated indecent assault charges broke.

Cosby was released on $1 million bail before 3 p.m. and driven home shortly afterward, without offering any comment. His attorneys said hours later that they believed the comedian will be exonerated of the charges, which they called "unjust."

But Troiani offered her thanks for filing the charges to the Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office in a prepared statement, and for "the consideration and courtesy they have shown Andrea during this difficult time."

And while Troiani said that Constand was "gratified with the overwhelming positive response to today's events," and that several other women with "heart-wrenching accounts" of their own had reached out to her, she did lament that the charges took more than a decade to be brought.

"Naturally it is troubling that it took until the eleventh hour for this day to arrive," Troiani said. "She is hopeful that her patience has encouraged other victims to come forward."

Several other women who have also accused Cosby of sexual abuse and assault had mixed emotions at the news of his criminal charges. NBC Nightly News' Kate Snow, who interviewed many of the women for a special earlier this year, said it has been a "long journey" for Cosby's accusers. Some met the charges with relief, while the news stirred past pain in others.

"Tears, jumps for joy, thought this day would never come, etc.," accuser Linda Cooper Kirkpatrick told Snow today in a message, according to NBC News. "I feel again, vindication. I've lost friends over my 'coming out' and to them I say I shall forgive."

Cosby and his representatives have previously repeatedly denied all allegations. Prior to this, he had never been charged with any crime regarding the allegations.

In the Philadelphia area, where Cosby has roots, reactions to Cosby's criminal charges varied.

Paul Smith, who grew up in the city, said he recalls "urban myths" about Cosby always swirling.

"Growing up in Philadelphia, there had always been these little stories, urban myths, that these things were going on," Smith said.

Kyra Stauts, who attends Rutgers University in Camden, said she wasn't fully sold on all the allegations against the long-beloved comedian.

"It's hard to believe that all these people were really victims," Stauts said. "But at the same time, some of them have to be telling the truth."

Davonna Parsons, of Logan, said she's still a Cosby fan, and that she doesn't believe the allegations against him.

"I don't think they have evidence for anything," Parsons said. "I think they just try to get people the best way that they can."

Though she said she's also a longtime Cosby fan herself, Deborah Kosak, of Swarthmore, said she tends to believe the accusations.

"I've always been personally a Cosby fan," Kosak said. "But again, legends, themselves, are humans."

Public transportation just got a lot easier.

SEPTA announced the beginning of the transition of the SEPTA Key, a card that promises to make your trip quicker and simpler.

“We’re excited about the flexibility and options the SEPTA Key Card will offer our customers,” SEPTA officials wrote on the transit authority's website.

The Key is a card that can be detected by key validators that are already installed at some stations. SEPTA said the card validators will be installed at all bus, trolley, trackless trolley, and Norristown High Speed Line fare boxes.

The cards will be available as reloadable fare cards or single-ride fares.

The transition will happen in two stages, according to SEPTA. The first step will include Transit (buses, trolleys, trackless trolleys, and high speed lines) in 2015, and Regional Rail and the CCT Connect Paratransit services will follow in 2016.

“While we may be breaking new ground for the industry, today our only focus is making certain everything works together as designed so that we can offer seamless travel across the SEPTA service region in the near future,” SEPTA's website said of the change.
