Beloved Bakery Goes Up in Flames on Christmas Eve

Just hours after people lined up to grab Christmas treats at a Delaware bakery, the beloved bakery went up in flames Christmas Eve.

The blaze broke out at Serpe and Sons Bakery on Kirkwood Highway in Elsmere shortly after 6 p.m. Thursday and quickly spread, said the state fire marshal.

Firefighters arrived to find flames shooting through the roof. As SkyForce10 hovered overhead a short time later, firefighters could be seen going in and out of the building as thick smoke poured from the large building.

Two firefighters required evaluation at an area hospital, said New Castle county dispatchers.

The blaze broke out just hours after people packed Serpe's to pick up cakes, cookies, Italian bread and rolls for Christmas meals.

Photos posted to the bakery’s Facbeook page Thursday morning showed lines out the door:

The Serpe family even turned to Instagram to thank customers as the fire was burning.

No word yet on the extent of damage nor a cause of the fire that left Christmas ruined for at least one family:

Silent Santa Controversy in NJ

For a few brief hours on Wednesday, Santa Claus was canceled, scratched from the Christmas eve fire truck parade in Roosevelt, New Jersey.

It was the fallout from a controversy on a town vote last week to improve a small, aging firehouse heavily damaged by Hurricane Sandy three years ago.

The bond referendum lost on a tie vote. Opponents argued upgrading the town's water system was a higher priority and that they didn't trust the fire department and town council to make the improvements to the firehouse.

A few days later, one of the town's three fire trucks passed the home of a well-known opponent blaring its siren.

"One resident filed a complaint which tells you people are annoyed," said Mayor-elect Jeff Ellentuck.

That led to a backlash in the already divided town, and by Wednesday the volunteer fire department posted on Facebook that it was canceling it's Christmas eve parade with Santa.

Soon, supporters were responding to the post saying that Santa had to make his run, and after a few hours the fire department reposted and said the parade would go ahead but the sirens would be silent.

Instead, Christmas music is being played from the speakers to draw children out of their homes to see Santa as he is escorted out of town and on the way to the North Pole.

Christmas Brings Record Temps to East Coast

In parts of the U.S. accustomed to cozying up to the fireplace this time of year, Christmas is going to feel more like summer amid another day of record-breaking holiday heat, NBC News reported.

Forecasters say this will be the warmest Christmas Day on record for many cities up and down the East Coast, where temperatures will be between 15 and 25 degrees higher than normal this time of year.

New York City's Central Park reached 66 degrees early Friday, topping the previous record of 64 degrees in 1982, according to the National Weather Service. That high followed an exceptionally balmy Christmas Eve, when the mercury hit a record 72 in Central Park — rivaling temperatures the city saw in July.

Washington, D.C., could see temperatures soar to more than 70 degrees after the morning's low temperature had already set a record high, The Weather Channel reported. Chicago was expecting to see a high 10 degrees higher than normal (44 degrees) and St. Louis 16 degrees higher than normal (56 degrees).

The escaped emu was on the run in Delaware for months, eluding police and animal control officers before several people were able to wrangle the elusive bird on Nov. 11. Among the group were workers from Three Palms Petting Zoo in Clayton.[[211053881, C]]

Record-Tying Christmas Warmth in Philly

The extreme December warmth continued Christmas day bringing record-breaking or tying high temperatures to the Philadelphia region.

A day after temps around 70 shattered records pretty much everywhere, some more records fell as high temps pushed past 70 in Georgetown, Delaware (74) and Atlantic City Airport (71). Mt Pocono also hit a record with a high of 63.

In Philadelphia the high of 68 degrees tied the record, which is something still notable even if it doesn’t stand alone.

"Well, it's hard to set records," said NBC10 First Alert Weather chief meteorologist Glenn "Hurricane" Schwartz. "Each day has a different record, yesterday's was 64, if today's record was 64 we would have broken it. Today's record was 68."

More record warmth (possible another record high) is expected Sunday after a cooler Saturday with rain and highs in the 50s as a back-door cold front temporarily knock down temps, said Glenn.

"The front is coming down from the northeast, the wind is coming down from the northeast, it’s going to be cloudy… it will be much, much colder,” said Glenn who noted that the 70-degree days are about 30 degrees above normal for this time of year.

The warmer weather won’t last as Glenn is forecasting colder temps for the New Year that people will really notice.

"The fact that we've been so warm, it's going to make it feel that much warmer."
