Girl Calls 911 in Panic Over Elf

A 7-year-old New Jersey girl called 911 in a panic when she did something that she thought would get her in trouble with Santa.

Isabelle LaPeruta of Old Bridge contacted cops after she accidentally touched her Elf on the Shelf -- a no-no, according to the popular children's book, because the Christmas magic goes away from the home.

A recording of the 911 call revealed the girl's concerns.

"Hello?" the 911 operator says.

"It's Isabella," the girl says.

"Hi. Hi, Isabella. Why are you calling 911?" the operator asks.

Suddenly, the girl panics.

"Don't come to my house!" she shouts. "Don't!"

She goes on to explain, "I was trying to call my dad" to tell him about the accident.

The operator responds, "You can just say you made a mistake."

Despite Izzy's pleas, police have to check out any 911 call from a child, so an officer went to the home and when he arrived, found the girl in tears.

The officer calmed Isabella down as her mother woke from a nap and found her daughter trying to shoo away the cop.

"She was hysterical crying, she was panicking," said Lynanne LaPeruta.

Izzy admitted later, "I didn't want to get in trouble."

She said the elf fell onto the floor when she threw a ball.

The officer radioed back to headquarters: "Isabella apologized. She touched the Elf on a Shelf. She won't call 911 again."

Police were understanding.

"To her, it was an emergency when she touched the elf, and she's going to ruin Christmas, so that was her emergency," said Old Bridge Police Lt. Joseph Mandola. "In her mind, she did right, and it was fine with us."

Izzy said of Santa: "He knows I'm not going to do that again."

Lynanne said her daughter now knows what constitutes a true emergency.

"I think she knows not to call 911 unless it's an emergency, and an Elf of the Shelf falling off the shelf is not an emergency," she said.

Counterterrorism officials and police are searching for a man who stole dozens of industrial propane tanks from two Northeast Philadelphia facilities last week, law enforcement sources tell NBC10.

The tanks were stolen overnight last Thursday from Praxair at 2300 Church Street in Frankford and James Morrissey Inc. at 4720 Pennypack Street in the Holmesburg section of the city, sources said.

Security footage from the facilities show a man loading 43 tanks of various sizes into a dark-colored minivan, according to sources.

Twenty-four of the tanks are said to be the size and style used to fuel forklifts, sources said. Also taken were nine tanks that hold 100 pounds of fuel, four 50 pound tanks, four 33 pound tanks and two 2 pound tanks, according to sources.

Investigators sent out a bulletin to authorities across Northeast Philadelphia asking them to be on the lookout for the van and thief.

Lights So Bright, His Parents Can See Them From Heaven

Whether you’re speeding down I-95, flying thousands of feet in the sky or just walking down Prior Road in Wilmington, Delaware, you can’t miss The Smiths' home this time of year.

“We just started putting lights up, the more I put up, the better it looked,” said Tom Smith.

Tom, with the help of his wife, kids and brother-in-law, Ralph, strings nearly 700,000 Christmas lights in all directions over his two acre property: across the roof of his rancher, through the trees and all over the lawn. Some burn white and most twinkle. There are tall candy canes, light-up nutcrackers and inflatable Christmas bears and all bring joy to scores of people every holiday season.

Visitors who stop by to take in the spectacle — which takes two months to build and comes with a $4,000 electric bill — have the chance to take a stroll to the North Pole and meet ol’ Saint Nick (played by Ralph). It’s so popular Delaware State Police have to direct traffic around the neighborhood.

“This time of year with everything I think sometimes we forget, we're so used to giving big presents that we forget about other people's feelings and with all the stuff going on in the world I think this is just beautiful," said Denise Buemi. She insisted her family stop, while on their way home from a wake, for a little cheer.

Tom, 54, started building the display 33 years ago after losing both his parents within months of each other. He wanted to put up lights so bright, his parents could see them from up above.

“That’s my boy. That’s what I think, that’s what they say,” Tom said.

The Smiths welcome visitors every night, for free, until around 11 p.m. The address is 1902 Prior Road, Wilmington, Delaware.

Two police officers had to be extricated from their patrol car after they crashed with a tractor-trailer truck in Morris County, authorities say.

The Mendham police officers were in their patrol car on Corey Lane and Mendham Road when the crash happened at about 8 p.m., police said. It's not clear what led to the crash.

Rescuers had to cut out the car to get to the officers because their vehicle was so badly damaged.

The officers were taken to Morristown Hospital with minor injuries. They're listed in stable condition.

A condition on the truck driver, who was also taken to the hospital, wasn't immediately available.

Corey Lane and Mendham Road remain closed as police investigate.

Sylvester Stallone parted ways with some of his most iconic movie items to the tune of more than $3 million, according to Dallas-based Heritage Auctions. A portion of the proceeds went to charities important to the actor.

Ionic costumes, props and personal items were sold to the highest bidders at three public auctions in Beverly Hills and online over the weekend.

Earlier this year, Stallone realized all the items from his movies had been wrapped up and preserved meticulously and decided to auction the pieces. Stallone handed over more than 1,400 items and about 850 lots were up for auction.

Rocky Balboa's leather jacket from "Rocky" sold for $149,000 after what Heritage Auctions called "spirited bidding."

A pair of boxing trunks from "Rocky IV" worn during in an early match against Ivan Drago, played by Dolph Lundgren, sold for $57,500. The red satin robe, boxing shorts and leather boxing shoes worn by the Drago character sold for $45,000.

No item was too small for movie fans, the small black rubber handball Stallone's character carried with him in "Rocky" and "Rocky II" sold for $32,500.

John Rambo's canvas poncho from "First Blood" sold for $60,000, much higher than the pre-sale estimate of $10,000.

The costume armor, created by the late Gianni Versace, and prop gun Stallone wore in the sci-fi thriller "Judge Dredd" sold for $30,000.

Collectors also bid on personal mementos Stallone gathered throughout his career. A pair of 1980 Muhammad Ali training gloves, signed by the boxing legend and given to him nine days before Ali lost the Heavyweight Champion title to Larry Holmes, sold for $47,500.

Stallone attended the opening hours of the first two auction sessions.

"The memorabilia I have has been used and been a part of my life for, kind of hard to admit this, well over 40 years," he said. "It's been in my possession and I’ve fond memories attached to just about every object. There comes a point, though, when I think that I've used these objects enough and have created enough memories that I can let them go."

A portion of the proceeds from the auction will be donated by Stallone to various charities that assist military veterans and wounded service members as well as The Motion Picture and TV Country House and Hospital.

The husband of a Bucks County day care provider faces sexual assault charges after a woman came forward with allegations stemming from when she was a girl.

Falls Township Police charged Harry Lawrence III Tuesday after the woman said the now-54-year-old Yardley, Pennsylvania man molested her when she was 9 or 10 years old and being cared for at Little Joys Day Care, which was in Bristol Township before moving to Falls Township. Lawrence’s wife owned and operated the day care, said police.

The woman told investigators she would go to the day care on Vernon Road on days she didn’t have school from 2000 to 2003. While at the day care, she said that Lawrence molested her between six to 12 times, said a criminal complaint obtained from Falls Township Police.

The assaults began with Lawrence placing the girl in his lap and progressed to bare skin groping and fondling, the victim told police.

A judge arraigned Lawrence on indecent assault and molestation charges and sent him to county jail on $250,000 bail, according to court records. No attorney information was available for Lawrence.

Investigators wanted to make sure there are no other victims and asked anyone with information to please contact Det. Reeves at 215-302-3305 or by email.

A man hired by a Philadelphia doctor for sex strangled and robbed him inside a Center City hotel room, homicide detectives tell NBC10.

Manuel Baez, 27, was charged Wednesday with the murder of Dr. Howard Baker. The prominent 75-year-old psychiatrist was found dead Monday morning, sitting naked on the floor of his fifth floor hotel room at the Rodeway Inn at 1208 Walnut Street. A belt was tied tightly around his neck and his backpack and wallet were stolen, police said.

Philadelphia Police Homicide Capt. James Clark tells NBC10 that Baez confessed to the crime after being taken into custody Tuesday night.

Baez was homeless and sold his body for sex, according to Clark, an act that Baker allegedly paid for Sunday evening.

Baker checked into the hotel Sunday afternoon after telling his wife he was heading out to watch the Eagles game.

Baez was one of two men caught on surveillance video visiting Baker's hotel room that night. He left the hotel alone, but with Baker's belongings, police said. The doctor's body was found the next day. The other visitor was not involved in the murder.

Investigators said Baker's family had no idea he had checked into the hotel. The married father lived in Wynnewood, Pennsylvania, and had practices in Center City, two blocks from the hotel, and Wynnewood.

Baker practiced psychiatry for 30 years and specialized in relationship problems, ADHD and spirituality.

An arraignment has not been set for Baez. It's not clear whether he has retained an attorney.
