A New Jersey woman "looking for New Jersey" faces a charge of driving while intoxicated after encountering police near the Holland Tunnel entrance in New Jersey.

Port Authority police spotted a 2000 Volkswagen Beetle stop at the intersection of 13th and Provost streets in Jersey City at about 2:30 a.m. Saturday and watched as a woman got out of the car.

The woman, 31-year-old Karol Andino, of North Bergen, told the officer she was "looking for New Jersey," a police official said. She was unsteady on her feet and admitted that she "had a few drinks," police said. She was advised that she was already in New Jersey.

Andino failed a sobriety test and a Breathalyzer test indicated that she had a blood-alcohol level three times the legal limit, police said.

In addition to DWI, Andino was charged with careless driving. There was no indication she had obtained a lawyer who could comment on the charges.

Man Charged in London Undeground Stabbings: A 29-year-old man will appear in a British court Monday after he was charged with attempted murder in a knife attack in a London subway station, police said. Police said they are treating the attack on Saturday as a terrorist incident. None of the victims suffered life-threatening injuries, but one was initially reported in serious condition. Commander Richard Walton, head of the Metropolitan Police counterterrorism task force, said in a statement Sunday that London remains under a "severe" terrorism threat and more attacks are "highly likely."

Man Paints Over Anti-Police Graffiti on I-95: Police and thousands of Facebook users are thanking a landscaping company owner who took it upon himself to cover up anti-police graffiti on an I-95 overpass in Chester, Pennsylvania. Pat McCusker, the owner of Garnet Valley Farms, told NBC10 he was driving on I-95 when he saw the words “Cop Killen Season” spray-painted on an overpass. A few days later, McCusker passed by the graffiti again and decided to take action. As another person recorded, McCusker painted over the anti-police message and put up pictures of smiling snowmen as well as an American flag. McCusker posted video of him covering up the graffiti on his company’s Facebook page Saturday. So far it has over 71,000 views and hundreds of comments from Facebook users showing their appreciation. Chester Police Chief Otis Blair told NBC10 he’s thankful the graffiti, which was on the overpass for several weeks, is finally gone. He also said he understands, however, that many residents in the area have a negative view of police. McCusker insists he wasn’t trying to make a political statement with his video, but was instead, merely trying to spread some Holiday cheer.

Counting Mass Shootings Is a Bad Way to Understand Gun Violence

$
0
0

According to articles this last week across the Internet, there has been an average of one mass shooting every day in the United States: 355 so far this year. It’s a jarring statistic, and one that has gone viral in the wake of this week’s massacre in San Bernardino, California.

But there are two problems with the number: It doesn’t actually provide a clear estimate of how often the country has seen shooting rampages like the one in San Bernardino. And it obscures the broader reality of gun violence in America.

Counting “mass shootings” is notoriously complicated and contested, since there is no standard definition of what they are. Is it best to count shootings that injure or kill a certain number of people? Or should the definition focus more narrowly on attacks in which the motivation of the shooter “appears to be indiscriminate killing”?

Mother Jones, which has been tracking mass shootings since 2012, has counted just four mass shootings this year, and a total of 73 since 1982, as Mother Jones editor Mark Follman has noted in The New York Times.

In 2014, the FBI released its own count of “active shooter” incidents, focusing on events where law enforcement and citizens may have the chance to intervene and change the outcome of the ongoing shooting. It tallied a total of 160 of these events from 2000 to 2013–including high-profile shootings at Virginia Tech, Fort Hood, and Sandy Hook Elementary School– with an average of 11 per year.

The “355 mass shootings this year” that has been rocketing around the Internet comes from a crowdsourced Reddit initiative that gathers media reports of shootings in which four or more people were shot.

The Reddit count includes many incidents that Mother Jones, the FBI, and others leave out: for instance, a home robbery, a drive-by shooting, and a gang fight.

The Reddit project’s organizers suggest this broader approach does a better job of capturing the burden of gun violence–including the suffering and costs of treating people who are shot and survive.

“The most obscene incidents of gun violence usually do not make the mainstream news at all,” the project’s introduction says, citing a nightclub shooting in Tennessee in which 18 people were shot and only one person killed. “We believe the media does a disservice to mass shooting victims by virtually ignoring them unless large numbers are killed.”

Yet bundling together all incidents in which four people or more people are shot doesn’t capture the bigger picture.

As ProPublica detailed last week, gun murder in America is largely a story of race and geography. Half of all gun murder victims are black men. The gun murder rate for black Americans is dramatically higher than it is for white Americans. And the burden of violence tends to be concentrated in certain neighborhoods of certain cities.

[[360581281,C]]

Reddit’s Mass Shooting Tracker does not include any breakdown by race. In response to questions about the group’s numbers, one project organizer, GhostofAlyeska, wrote, “Our intent is not to analyze the causes or cures for gun violence, but simply to expose the available data. We're volunteers working from a reddit community, nothing more.”

The Reddit project cites 462 people killed under its broad definition of mass shootings. The number of gun homicides of black men killed in 2013, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention: 5,798.

Baltimore alone has seen a total of 316 total homicides so far this year–the vast majority of them shooting deaths of black victims, according to the Baltimore Sun’s homicide map. The city’s homicide rate is now at a record high. The Reddit tracker captures eight of those deaths.

San Bernardino has two entries in this year’s Mass Shooting Tracker: yesterday’s attack, and a nightclub shooting reportedly linked to gang violence. The area has long struggled with poverty, gangs, and homicide. “My son was shot to death with an AK–47. My nephew was murdered and his body was burned and buried,” San Bernardino resident Marisa Hernandez told Vice News on Wednesday. "This type of mass shootings happens everyday here to our kids and nobody stops it, nobody does anything.”

Boy With Cancer Blessed by Pope in Philly Dies

A young Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, cancer patient who was blessed by Pope Francis during his Philadelphia visit, has died.

Family members of 9-year-old Landon Vargas announced his death on their Facebook page:

"It saddens us to have to say this but our precious son Landon, went to live with God Saturday evening. We will miss him dearly but are glad to know he is finally healthy and happy sitting next to our Lord. Landon was an intelligent, funny and loving 9 year old that touched many in his short time. He fought valiantly for 5 years. We don’t know anyone tougher or braver than him," the family wrote.

Landon, who turned 9 on Thanksgiving Day, was scooped up from the crowded sidelines during the pope's Sept. 26 procession to Independence Mall. Pope Francis reached out, gently cupped Landon's head and kissed the frail boy, who wore his Batman T-shirt that day.

Landon's father, a Spanish teacher at William Penn High School, said his son was in a good position that day to see the pope come by, but there was no a guarantee he'd be selected to meet the pontifex.

As the Popemobile approached, Ariel Vargas kept saying, "Bendicelo!" which means "Bless him!" That caught the attention of the pope's security detail as they scanned bystanders.

Landon was diagnosed with cancer on his fourth birthday.

"He's had a long road for the last 5 years and we're running out of options, and this was a good one," his father said the day after Landon was blessed by the pope. "We were praying and hoping that he [Pope Francis] would bless him, and now it's in God's hands."

The Vargas family is planning a celebration of Landon's life on Saturday. You can follow their Facebook page for more information.

“Oh my god it’s a taxi.”

A woman can be heard saying that as cellphone video rolls of a taxicab on fire along the Vine street Expressway (Interstate 676) eastbound in Center City over the weekend.

The 215-Get-a-Cab taxi burst into flames after colliding with two other cars along 676 Sunday afternoon, said Pennsylvania State Police. It came to rest at the foot of the Broad Street Exit.

“You’re about to drive into it,” a child can be heard saying.

The cabbie had a fare on board at the time, said police. The driver and the passenger got out with minor injuries and no one in the other two cars suffered any injuries, said investigators.

A representative of dispatcher 215-Get-a-Cab said the company didn’t have information about the crash and wished the best for the driver and passenger involved.

The exact cause of the blaze that sent black smoke up into the air remained under investigation Monday.

Police K-9 units were brought in to sweep Radnor High School after a 9 mm bullet was found in a hallway.

Monday morning's discovery prompted the school to go into a Level 2 Lockdown around 12:30 p.m. so police officers and K9s could conduct a full sweep of the inside of the building, then the outside.

"At this time, there has been no threat or danger discovered and all students and staff members are safe," according to an alert posted on the school's website.

Generally, a Level 2 Lockdown means all students and staff are required to stay in classrooms -- or if outside, go to their pre-assigned evacuation points. School doors are locked and everyone shelters in place until the school is deemed safe.

Radnor High School is located in Wayne, Pa. and serves about 1,200 students in grades 9 through 12. The student body is mostly white with minority enrollment around 22-percent according to U.S. News and World Report's education overview.

The district ranks 3rd in the state by Niche Academics which looks at factors including test scores, college readiness, graduation rates and the quality of teachers, students and parent reviews.

Housekeeper "Mastermind" Behind Block Captain's Death: Police

Fishtown block captain, Kathy Wilson was beaten to death by a housekeeper she'd known for years and the housekeeper's boyfriend, according to police.

Wilson, 54, was beaten savagely with a wrench and the couple took off with over $20,000 Wilson had in her home, said Philadelphia Police Capt. James Clark.

The former housekeeper, 47-year-old Jane Johnson and her boyfriend, 50-year-old James Cheever, showed up at the house on the 1300 block of Earl Street Friday and Wilson let them in thinking they'd come to clean, police said.

Police found Wilson's body Monday morning after Johnson walked into the 26th District and asked officers to check on her friend, who had not been seen since Friday. When police arrived at Wilson's home they found her inside badly beaten. She was pronounced dead at the scene by medics.

Investigators say Johnson initially implicated Cheever in Wilson's death. After Johnson and Cheever were both taken into custody and questioned they allegedly admitted their roles in the murder. Capt. Clark said Johnson, who knew Wilson for years and was also aware she'd come into some money, was the mastermind.

Neighbors told NBC10's Doug Shimell that Wilson was a block captain, a Republican poll worker and well known in her part of Fishtown.

"This is horrifying," said Janet Carey, Wilson's neighbor. "I've known her for a long time. For something like this to happen to her is unbelievable."

Friends told NBC10 Wilson was known for her sense of humor.

"We enjoyed working with her," said Bill Pomeroy. "She was a fun person. She was funny and she was just crazy, enjoyable."

Wilson was hospitalized recently and would not have had the strength to put up much of a fight, according to Clark. Initially, the couple intended to beat and rob her, Clark said, adding it escalated to murder when she was beaten repeatedly with the wrench. Her body was found on the couch.

Cheever and Johnson are charged with murder, robbery and related offenses. Cheever worked now and then as a handyman for Wilson. Clark said it's the first time either of them have been in trouble with the law.

Doctor Uses Hair Tie, Whiskey to Save Man's Life -- In Flight

A Lehigh Valley Hospital doctor used her hair tie and whiskey to help a sick passenger aboard a flight from Philadelphia to San Francisco.

Doctor Patricia Quinlan was on her way to San Francisco Thanksgiving Day when a man across the aisle fell out of his seat.

When it became obvious he hadn't just fallen asleep, she went into help mode and discovered his blood pressure was dangerously low and his heart beat, irregular, according to The Morning Call.

Quinlan used the plane's AED or automated external defibrillator to figure out the 59-year-old man did not have a life-threatening blockage because his heart rhythm was normal. But to stabilize her patient at 35,000 feet in the air, she had to use a little ingenuity along with the help of a nurse and emergency medical technician who were among the passengers.

Major airlines are required to carry close to 30 items in their emergency medical kits, including about 16 ounces of saline solution, the most common intravenous solution patients are given to replace fluids.

As Quinlan and her team prepared their patient for the IV, another passenger offered his belt for a tourniquet, but it was too big so Quinlan used her hair tie. Then she used whiskey from the bar cart to disinfect the IV needle. Still other passengers pitched in by shining the lights on their smartphones so Quinlan could see. It took about 90 minutes to get him stabilized.

"I think he was just probably very, very dehydrated," she said.

The United Airlines flight crew nicknamed her "Doctor Angel" and gave Dr. Quinlan a thank-you note for going "above and beyond."

A teacher is recovering after he was beaten by three teens at a Philadelphia high school Monday morning, according to investigators.

The attack occurred at George Washington High School on Bustleton Avenue, police said. The 41-year-old teacher was inside his classroom shortly after 10 a.m. when three teen boys arrived at the door. After one of the teens entered the room, the teacher closed the door and locked it so that the other two teens couldn't get in, according to police.

The teen that went inside then approached a female student, asked her where his phone was and checked through her book bag, investigators said. The teacher then told the teen he was calling police and went to use the classroom security phone. The teen then allegedly ran towards the teacher and pulled the phone from his hand leading to a struggle between the two.

Police say the teen then punched the teacher in the face several times. The other two teens then managed to enter the classroom, according to investigators. The teens allegedly grabbed the teacher, pushed him and held him while the first teen continued to punch him. The teens then fled but were stopped by school security and taken to the school police office, investigators said.

The teacher identified two of the three teens who attacked him, police said. The teacher was then taken to Aria-Torresdale Hospital and treated for facial injuries and a possible concussion.

Two of the three teens, ages 16 and 17, were arrested and charged with aggravated assault, simple assault, recklessly endangering another person, conspiracy and disorderly conduct.

Pig's Head Found Outside Philly Mosque

A gruesome discovery outside a North Philadelphia mosque has sparked a police investigation. A caretaker at the Al Aqsa Islamic Society told police he found the bloody, severed head of a pig outside the mosque around 6 a.m. Monday when he showed up to set up for morning prayer services.

Surveillance video at the building, which is located on 1501 Germantown Avenue, shows a person inside a red pickup truck driving past the mosque and throwing an object out of the vehicle’s window Sunday night, according to investigators. Police are investigating the incident and are speaking to witnesses.

The Quran forbids the consumption of pork and describes pigs as dirty and filthy animals.

Early Monday evening, Philadelphia Mayor-elect Jim Kenney released a statement on the incident.

"The bigotry that desecrated Al-Aqsa mosque today has no place in Philadelphia," he said. "The City of Brotherly Love and Sisterly Affection has a long history of coming together in the face of challenge. We cannot allow hate to divide us now, in the face of unprecedented difficulties. I ask all Philadelphians to join me in rejecting this despicable act and supporting our Muslim neighbors."
