Syrian Refugee Family Arrives in NJ

0
0

A family of seven Syrian refugees is expected to be relocated to Paterson on Monday, weeks after Gov. Chris Christie told President Obama that the state wouldn't accept any more Syrian refugees.

Church World Services, the group that is organizing the relocation effort, said Monday that the refugees would likely arrive in New Jersey sometime late in the afternoon. The group wouldn’t give their exact arrival time or say the airport that they’d be flying into out of fear for their safety.

There is concern for the family’s security given the recent political climate in the wake of the Nov. 13 Paris terrorist attacks. The seven refugees’ arrival comes about two weeks after Gov. Christie wrote a letter to President Obama telling him that he was ordering state agencies not to assist the federal government in resettling any Syrian refugees because of terrorism concerns following the attacks in Paris.

In a statement Monday, a spokeswoman for the governor said that the federal government has failed to consult New Jersey about the refugees and has shared no security or background information. She said the governor will continue to oppose resettling refugees in New Jersey until national and state security fears are discussed.

“Rather than address concerns expressed by governors of both parties and the director of the FBI, the federal government has chosen instead to persist with its plan to increase the number of new refugees at a previously unattainable rate,” the spokeswoman said in the statement.

Paterson Mayor Jose Torres said Monday that he believes Christie’s views are politically motivated and that he’s only making this an issue because of his presidential ambitions.

In a radio interview earlier this month, Christie said that he wouldn’t allow orphaned infants to be resettled in his state.

Christie is just one of a long list of governors across the U.S. to take the position in the aftermath of the Paris attacks, which have stoked new fears about the potential risk caused by the flood of migrants trying to escape from Syria's brutal civil war.

Experts said states don't have the authority to stop refugees and New Jersey state agencies don't play a large role in resettling refugees, except for those that might need medical or financial assistance. New Jersey has accepted 75 Syrian refugees so far this year, according to data from the Refugee Processing Center.

Millions of refugees have fled Syria and Iraq because of ongoing crises in the two countries. More than 600,000 refugees and other migrants from the Middle East, Africa and Asia have entered Europe through Greece this year, many after making the short sea crossing from Turkey. Most of them continue on a long trek through the Balkans toward the promised lands of central and northern Europe, according to The Associated Press.

President Obama has said that the U.S. will accept 10,000 Syrian refugees a year — that’s out of about 70,000 refugees the U.S. accepts annually from around the world.

By late afternoon Tuesday, Philadelphia International Airport has reported 20-straight hours of light rain.

“There may be some breaks in the rainfall coming through this evening but then it redevelops for tomorrow during the day and we could see some heavy downpours tomorrow during the afternoon.”

An inch to 1-1/2 inches is expected in Philadelphia, said Bill.

But, no snow is expected to fall, even in the Poconos as temps remains in the 40s and 50s.

“It never is going to get cold enough here,” said Bill.

But residents could see some troubles if they put off a fall chore until now.

“If you didn’t clear out your gutters it’s probably coming over the edge of the gutter and it’s letting you know that you should definitely clear out your gutters,” said Bill.

As the rain leaves late Wednesday, mild weather returns following a gusty and partly sunny Thursday.

“Once we get past this bit of wet weather we return you to your regularly scheduled warmer than normal December,” said Bill.

A 17-year veteran of the Philadelphia Police Department could be permanently out of a job after being arrested for domestic assault in Bucks County.

Bensalem Police arrested Officer Joseph Sees on Thanksgiving on charges of simple assault and harassment after neighbors heard violent fight-like sounds coming from a property, said investigators.

The incident left a woman with facial injuries, including a possibly broken nose, said Philadelphia Police.

Investigators didn’t reveal the nature of the relationship between Sees and his alleged victim.

Philadelphia Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey suspended 48-year-old Sees, who works at the 15th District, for 30 days with the intent to fire the veteran law enforcer.

Sees faces a preliminary hearing later this month. Philadelphia-based attorney Fortunato N. Perri, Jr. said his client "has been a dedicated and well respected member of the Philadelphia Police Department for close to two decades."

"This is an unfortunate incident and we hope to resolve this matter favorably for everyone involved," said Perri.

Kobe on Final Game in Philly: 'It's Gonna Be Beautiful'

0
0

Los Angeles Lakers superstar Kobe Bryant announced on Sunday that he would retire from the NBA at the end of this season.

Bryant's first game after his retirement announcement will be tonight when his Lakers take the floor in his hometown against the Sixers at the Wells Fargo Center.

WATCH LIVE on this page: Bryant will address the media at 5p.m.

"It's gonna be beautiful," Bryant, a 17-time All Star and former league MVP, said of his final NBA homecoming. "So much of my game was developed in Philadelphia, playing at Lower Merion High School for Coach (Gregg) Downer and playing in the Sonny Hill League and playing at [Overbrook's] Tuston Playground and Ardmore Playground. Just so many great memories there."

In 31 career regular-season games against the Sixers, Bryant has averaged 23.6 points. In 16 career regular-season games in Philadelphia, Bryant has averaged 22.9 points per game.

His best game in his hometown came on Dec. 20, 2002 when he recorded 44 points, 10 assists and four rebounds in a 107-104 loss to the Sixers.

Despite his memories in Philadelphia, the 37-year-old Bryant has historically had an icy relationship with city's fans.

The five-time NBA champion won his second title when the Lakers bested league MVP Allen Iverson and the Sixers in the 2001 NBA Finals in five games.

Leading up to that series, Bryant let it be known to Sixers fans that he was going to "cut their hearts out." He went on to average 24.6 points that series and dropped 26 points in the title-clinching Game 5 on the Wells Fargo Center court.

In 2012, Bryant said he would never apologize for saying, "I'm going to come kick some ass."

Bryant returned to Philadelphia less than a year after the 2001 Finals for the 2002 NBA All-Star Game and received a hearty round of boos from the locals when he stood at center court postgame to receive the first of his four All-Star Game MVP trophies after scoring a game-high 31 points.

Both the 2-14 Lakers and 0-18 Sixers are struggling mightily heading into Tuesday night's game, and so is Bryant. Coming off injuries that held him to just 41 games over the past two seasons, Bryant, who has averaged 25.3 points per game over his 20-year career, is averaging just 15.5 points per game this season.

Those facts aside, Bryant is still very much looking forward to stepping on the hardwood one last time in Philadelphia as an NBA player.

"It's going to be a very, very special moment," he said.
