Man Killed in Fiery AC Expressway Crash

A South Jersey man is dead after the car he was driving slammed into a toll plaza and burst into flames along the Atlantic City Expressway Friday.

Joseph Crawford, 39, was driving westbound on the highway around 10:30 a.m. when he lost control of his mother's silver Hyundai Sonata and crashed into the Egg Harbor Toll Plaza in Hamilton Township, state police said.

The impact forced the car to flip onto its side and ignite. Crawford was unable to escape as flames engulfed the car and spread to two toll booths. No toll takers were hurt.

Bruce Crawford, the victim's father, told NBC10 his son was heading to work at Parx Casino in Bensalem, Pennsylvania. He's a card dealer at the gambling house and has regularly made the 50 mile commute since casino closures in Atlantic City forced him to switch jobs.

"Joe had a good heart and if you wanted somebody to be there for you, he would be there for you," the father said.

Bruce Crawford said state troopers told him they fielded several emergency calls from drivers about a silver sedan driving erratically down the highway. One caller reported, he said, that the car struck a barrier and rolled on a rim for about five miles before the crash.

Troopers said Joseph Crawford took a route that was five miles further from his home than necessary. Bruce Crawford said his son was acting normal when he left home Friday morning.

Traffic was diverted through the EZ-Pass express lanes as police investigated. The Crawford's car has since been towed and the toll plaza fully reopened.

What caused Crawford to lose control of his vehicle remains under investigation.

2 Dead After Boat Carrying 7 Overturns in NJ: Police

Two men have died after a pontoon boat carrying seven people capsized in an inlet in New Jersey, officials say.

The boat was in the Manasquan Inlet, near Point Pleasant Beach, when it flipped into the water Friday afternoon, according to New Jersey State Police.

Multiple agencies responded with choppers and boats in the search-and-rescue operation, including State Police Marine Service, State Police Aviation, U.S. Coast Guard and NYPD. All seven men on the boat were recovered.

Alex Osadchy, 66, was pronounced dead on the scene, and Grigory Klokishner, 74, died at Jersey Shore Hospital in Neptune, state police said. Both were from Philadelphia.

Four others were taken to Ocean Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries, and one refused medical treatment, according to state police.

Police said they're investigating but believe the strong currents were a contributing factor in the boat overturning. It's not clear if the men were wearing life vests.

Another witness Dan Gallagher, 18, was getting ready to surf when he saw a wave come up from behind the boat and flip it over.

"I saw the pontoon coming around the corner of the rocks, and one wave came up behind it and almost tipped it," he told Asbury Park Press. "As soon as it hit, the boat just kind of sat there. And the next wave came up right behind it and tipped it over the rest of the way."

Gallagher said it looked like there were about seven people in the water.

"Luckily, none of them got pulled toward the rocks. They were all able to get out in the water, but we didn't really see everybody coming up," he said.

Nearby boats and surfers in the water rushed to help some of the victims from the water before emergency responders arrived, said Gallagher.

"It's very, very heartbreaking that two people died, and it was so close to the beach," said another surfer, Keefer McKenna.

Witness Laura McGurk Stockel said she was fishing on her family's boat when they came across the rescue. She did not see what caused the boat to capsize but said there were very large swells Friday, and her own family had a hard time navigating their boat into the inlet.

The Philadelphia Zoo proudly announced the names of its two new red panda cubs Friday.

The cubs, Benjamin and Betsy, were born at the zoo on June 26th and debuted to the public in November.

The zoo asked the public for help naming the cubs. After thousands of entries, staff compiled a list and then asked the public to vote. The zoo received 40,000 votes and Benjamin and Betsy, with 17,000 votes, were the overwhelming winners.

“We are thrilled that so many people participated in naming our new panda cubs,” Kevin Murphy, General Curator, said in a release. “There were some really great submissions and paring down the list wasn’t easy but we are happy with the end result. This was a great way to build excitement as well as welcome these two important cubs to the Philadelphia Zoo.”

The names pay tribute to Betsy Ross, who is credited with making the first American flag, and Benjamin Franklin, one of the nation’s founding fathers.

Zoo officials say the cubs, and the mother, are doing very well.

A man was caught on surveillance camera just before police say he shot a South Jersey convenience store clerk dead on Wednesday night, and investigators are seeking the public's help to track him down.

Police said the suspected gunman was caught on camera walking into the Quick N Go convenience store, on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard near Marshal Lane in Willingboro, Burlington County, just before 8:20 p.m.

Investigators said they believe that the suspect walked into the store, where the victim, identified as 32-year-old Matthew Mwinsori, was working. The two men then walked out into the parking lot of the store, where police say the gunman shot Mwinsori before fleeing.

Officers were called to the store at 8:20 p.m. and found Mwinsori lying in the parking lot suffering from gunshot wounds, police said. He was taken to Lourdes Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead an hour later.

Mwinsori started working at the Quick N Go a few weeks ago. Before that, he was a clerk at another convenience store across the street. A native of Ghana where he was a military officer, Mwinsori came to the United States about five years ago, friends told NBC10. He leaves behind a 9-year-old daughter still living in his homeland.

"He never did something wrong to anyone so I don't know why this happened," friend Thomas Koffi said. He hired Mwinsori for his old job.

Police on Thursday released surveillance captures showing the suspected shooter.

"We are asking the public to take a good look at these photos and share them on social media," Burlington County Prosecutor Robert D. Bernardi implored in a statement. "This person took someone's life. Somebody out there knows his identity. Please assist us with bringing him to justice."

Tipsters should contact Willingboro Township Police at 609-877-6958 or the Burlington County officials at 609-267-8300.
