Officer to be Honored for Giving Homeless Man Shoes

A Delaware River Port Authority police officer caught on video giving a homeless man a new pair of shoes earlier this month will receive special recognition for his kindhearted act on Monday.

Congressman Donald Norcross will honor DRPA Police Officer Kenya Joyner during a ceremony at DRPA headquarters in Camden at 10 a.m., according to Norcross' press office.

On Saturday, Nov. 7, Kayla Palmer, of Pine Hill, New Jersey told NBC10 she and her father were at the PATCO station in Lindenwold about 4:30 p.m. when they spotted a homeless man who had just been kicked off a bus.

“My dad saw the man get kicked off the bus,” Palmer said. “He didn’t have any shoes on. I came up and he was telling me about it.”

Palmer then saw Joyner approach the shoeless man.

“We saw the officer pull back up and we thought he was gonna tell him to leave,” Palmer said. “Instead he came out with a box of shoes.”

Palmer began recording as the man tried on the pair of boots Joyner gave him.

“That was nice of you,” Palmer said to the officer as she walked towards him. “I wanna shake your hand. You’re gonna go viral!”

“Oh come on,” Joyner said, laughing.

Yet while the officer didn’t want to be in the spotlight, Palmer is hoping that his kind act gets the attention it deserves. She later posted the video on Facebook.

“He needed some recognition,” she said. “Because you do see some of those negative stories.”

According to Norcross' office, Joyner's random act of kindness has been seen by "hundreds of thousands of people around the globe" after the video did indeed go viral as Palmer had hoped it would.

WATCH: Man Channels Patti LaBelle in Pie Video

Last week, Wal-Mart customers might not even have noticed Patti LaBelle's line of sweet potato pies on the shelf amidst the dozens of other holiday treats. However, ever since entertainer James Wright Chanel's video reviewing the pies went viral, the pies have been flying off the shelves faster than they can be restocked.

The video, which features Chanel belting snippets of the legendary Philadelphia singer's "On My Own" and "Isn't It A Shame" after sinking his teeth into one of her pies, garnered over 5 million views in less than 24 hours.

"You'll turn into Patti after eating this," Chanel exclaimed after his third blissful bite.

The pies, which can be purchased at Wal-Mart for about $4 each, racked up over $2.3 million in sales in just 4 days after the video went viral.

Hundreds of fans desperate for a taste of Patti LaBelle’s pies were disappointed to find that their local Wal-Marts had completely sold out of their stock. One Facebook user was told by an employee that “people were buying them 20-30 at a time.” Another user said their local Wal-Mart had to take the pies off the shelves because people were stealing them.

When an NBC10 reporter called a Philadelphia Wal-Mart to ask about the pies, it was clear the store had already received a number of pie-related inquiries.

"Thank you for calling Wal-Mart, we are currently out of Patti Labelle pies," an employee said as soon as she picked up the phone.

Three other Philadelphia-area Wal-Marts we called were also sold out of the pies.

If you simply can't wait for your local Wal-Mart to restock, her pies can be purchased on eBay for as much as $45 a piece.

Dead Babies Found in Lot Are 'Medical Specimens': Official

Two newborn babies found dead in a trash-strewn North Philadelphia lot Sunday are "medical specimens" that had been preserved in some fashion, a city health department spokesman told NBC10 on Monday.

The infants, a baby boy and girl, likely came from a hospital or academic facility of some kind, Health Department spokesman Jeff Moran said. The babies' bodies had been preserved — presumably in formaldehyde — but it's unclear who preserved them, Moran said.

Investigators said Sunday the babies had cuts on their bodies that appeared to indicate they had previously undergone autopsies.

Police continue to investigate and are searching for a black pickup truck seen dumping trash in the area where the babies were found prior to their discovery. Detectives have been canvassing the neighborhood since Sunday in search of surveillance video.

Police said 9-year-old Kasime Crawford and another child found the dead infants Saturday night lying in a patch of grass next to a used-car lot on Mutter Street near Montgomery Avenue. Crawford told NBC10 he thought they were toys at first.

"Both of their faces were blue," Crawford said. "There's a doll baby. That's when it started stinking and that's when we checked and there was a baby. I went home and told my dad."

Residents returned to the lot Sunday morning and found the bodies, then called police. Police said medics pronounced the babies dead at the lot at 10:31 a.m. Both infants had cuts on them, while one had a clamp attached to the umbilical cord, police said.

"They were just thrown away like trash," said Stephanie Farrell, who lives near where the babies were found.

The medical examiner discovered that the bodies had possibly undergone autopsies at some point. Investigators have not yet determined how or when the babies died. They also have not yet determined how long they had been in the lot before they were found.

"You shouldn't throw little kids away," said Ronnie Jackson, Kasime's father. "You could've left them in the hospital, gave them to a charity, gave them to the fire department or knocked on my door and gave them to me."

NJ Mall Reverses Course, Will Now Let Kids See Santa for Free

Children wanting to see Santa Claus at a southern New Jersey mall won't have to pay after all.

The Cherry Hill Mall released a statement Monday saying visits to its Adventure to Santa would be free of charge to all children this holiday season. The move came amid backlash over reported costs of up to $50 for a packaged visit that included photos or video.

Many parents said the cost ran counter to the spirit of the holiday and was a disincentive to low-income families. The exhibit is one of only 12 Adventure to Santa attractions in the country.

"We appreciate our loyal customers and will continue to incorporate social and compelling experiences into the mall environment throughout the year for all to enjoy," Cherry Hill Mall Management said in a statement. "We hope families from around the region check out this must-visit holiday destination at the Cherry Hill Mall and also visit our other traditional Santa experiences at our six sister properties in the Philadelphia region."

Men Burst Into Phila. Home, Demand Money, Shoot Woman

Three men remained at large Monday after police say they broke into a Philadelphia rowhouse and shot a woman inside in the early-morning hours Monday.

Police said the trio, who wore ski masks, entered a home on Buckius Street near Frankford Avenue, in Port Richmond, about 3 a.m. and first demanded money from a man sleeping in a back bedroom. When the man told the robbers he had nothing, police told NBC10's Katy Zachry, the men woke up a woman in a front bedroom, held her at gunpoint demanding money from her, and then shot her three times in the arm.

The men then ran off empty-handed, police said. Neighbors told Katy Zachry that the couple moved onto the block, just a few weeks ago, and that more recently, several relatives -- including three small children -- moved in with them. The children, neighbors said, were inside the house at the time of the violent home-invasion.

The woman who was shot was in stable condition at Temple University Hospital Monday afternoon, and police continued to search for the trio of armed suspects and investigate the circumstances surrounding the attack.
